London: Jonathan Cape, 1956 8vo, FIRST EDITION, FIRST IMPRESSION (with "Boofy" for "Dolly"), PRESENTATION COPY inscribed by the author to John Hayward: ("For | John & his blue | pencil. | from | Ian."), binding A, original black cloth, lettered in silver, design to upper cover in silver and blind, DUST-JACKET, collector's black cloth clamshell box, some minimal wear to edges of dust-jacket Inscribed “For John & his blue pencil. From Ian”, referring to Hayward’s role as proof-reader and editor; he made corrections on every Fleming novel prior to publication. True to form, Hayward has marked up this copy with textural errors, annotating the rear flap of the dust-jacket with corresponding page numbers. This is one of a very few advance presentation copies of the fourth Bond novel, one of the other recipients of these being Noël Coward. John Hayward was a significant figure in literary and bibliophilic London in the decades after the Second World War. He was a close friend of T.S. Eliot and the two men shared a flat in Chelsea for ten years (during which time Hayward wielded his blue pencil on Eliot's drafts). Ian Fleming chose Hayward to edit The Book Collector when he founded the magazine in 1952, and Hayward remained as editor until his death from muscular dystrophy in 1965. (73.7 x 51 cm) This romantic comedy was directed by Richard Quine, and stars William Holden, Audrey Hepburn, Gregoire Aslan, Raymond Bussieres, Noel Coward and Tony Curtis, together with a cameo from Marlene Dietrich. Richard Benson (played by William Holden) - an old-time playboy - is commissioned to write a screenplay. Instead of getting on with writing the screenplay, Benson leaves it until two days before it's due, much preferring to immerse himself in his flamboyant lifestyle. All very last minute, Benson hires a secretary, Gabrielle Simpson (Audrey Hepburn), to type the non existent script. Benson is inspired by the beautiful Gabrielle, and together they put together a script.

GARBO, GRETA An important collection of letters to Salka Viertel Together, 65 letters, comprising 27 autograph letters signed, 16 autograph letters, 21 typed letters signed and a typed letter (signed "Tuscha," "Tusha," "T," or "G"), in English (4 in German), comprising over 100 pp., autograph letters mostly in pencil, New York, Stockholm, Paris, and vp, 1932–1973, to Salka Viertel ("Salka Liebe," Salka lilla"); many autograph envelopes. Greta Garbo's letters to her friend and mentor, Salka Viertel. Viertel (1889–1978) was an emigre actress, screenwriter and hostess to the community of German exiles living and working in Hollywood between the two world wars. She and Garbo were lifelong friends, as these intimate letters demonstrate. She was co-author of three great Garbo films: Queen Christina (1933), Anna Karenina (1935), and Two-Faced Woman (1941). These letters range in content from professional questions to Garbo's constantly changing travel plans and her worries over her health. Sometime in 1933, Garbo wrote to Viertel in German, complaining that "Europe is dead." "I know I'm an impossible person, but I can't make Christina in Europe. When you are as involved in film as I am, then you'll understand. I know that you're hoping that Christina would be mae in Europe — I'm very sorry Salka, but I'm in a state …." In other letters from the 1930's, she discusses the films Camille and Conquest, Noel Coward, Irving Thalberg, Louis B. Mayer. Garbo's strong sense of self-pity is candidly on display here. In 1937, she wrote, "I don't know anymore what to do …. I go nowhere, see no one — just like in Brentwood …. Perhaps you will come and resque [sic] me …. It's hard and sad to be alone, but sometimes it's even more difficult to be with someone." Her mania for privacy surfaces in a letter of 19 December 1938: "Please don't tell [George] Cukor where we will meet and ask if he will be silent about my coming if it is not in the newspapers. Let us meet in Pasadena. I will wire 'Meet Bieler' — that means Pasadena," In later letters she mentions plans with Gore Vidal and Baroness Cecile de Rothschild. Travel plans are canceled or changed for various reasons: "[I]t would be a mistake to go to Klosters as long as I have this condition. I feel very tired and cannot seem to get myself together to plan where to go. Again, to have to pack and leave seems rather too much …." In an undated letter, she cautions, "Please don't … put my name on the envelope. Because then I will have to leave." Late 1972 finds Garbo preoccupied with dreams: "Let us not underestimate dreams! Someone sent me a magazine which had pages about dreams. Then I dreamed that a cat bit me. I looked it up for the deviltry of it — It promised troubles and I got them." The two women's friendship endured for over fifty years. In a telegram dated 28 July 1932, Garbo wrote, "Thank you for everything you have done for me but above all thank Heaven that you exist auf wiederseh[e]n liebe Salka."

Important Jewels from a Family Collection Inherited From Mrs. John C. Wilson, Née Princess Natalie Paley ZIRCON AND DIAMOND RING, VERDURA Designed as a band of channel-set zircon baguettes, flanked by bezel-set single-cut diamonds, extending to a border of fluted gold, size 7½, signed Verdura; circa 1947. Born Countess Natalia Pavlovna von Hohenfelsen in 1905, Princess Natalie Paley (Mrs. John Chapman Wilson) was the daughter of Grand Duke Paul Alexandrovich, uncle of the last Russian Czar, Nicholas II. As a young girl, Natalie escaped Russia with her mother and sister Irina and lived in exile in Paris during the 1920s. She became a noted model for Vogue Magazine, first in Paris and later in New York. Edward Steichen, Horst and Cecil Beaton took many of her fashion photographs. While in London she met the Broadway producer and director John C. “Jack” Wilson, business partner of Noel Coward, Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne. Jack Wilson and Natalie were married in 1937 at his home in Fairfield, Connecticut. Her close friendship with jewelry designer Fulco di Verdura would result in her collection of several pieces of jewels created by the two, one of which is on offer here. Several pieces from the collection will also be sold in the December 10, Magnificent Jewels sale. Upon her death in 1981, the jewels on offer were passed to John C. Wilson’s niece, a portion of which was sold by Sotheby's in 2009. Sotheby's is once again honored to present a selection of jewels from this important family collection.

Fleming, Ian Diamonds Are Forever. London: Jonathan Cape, 1956 8vo. Publisher's black cloth, stamped in silver (Binding A); bumped at head and foot of spine. Pictorial dust jacket; light toning, particularly to edges and spine, two short marginal tears to upper edge of rear cover, head and foot of spine creased. First edition, presentation copy inscribed: "To Al | with Covent Garden | & all | & with affection | from | Ian." The idea for a book about diamond smuggling arose from an article published in The Sunday Times. Diamonds Are Forever features the first dust jacket design by Pat Marriot, showing Tiffany Case wearing a large diamond which was based upon a real stone known as "Afghanistan", owned by Ivar Bryce's wife. This was because Fleming first envisioned the plot of the novel at Ivar and Jo Bryce's Black Hole Hollow Farm in Vermont. The farm was near Saratoga Springs, and when Fleming and Bryce along with Ernie Cuneo visited the town in August 1954, Fleming accumulated a great deal of material for the book, including the mud bath scene and the "Studillac", driven by the wealthy American socialite, William Woodward Jr. The book was dedicated to Bryce, Cuneo and Woodward as a result. This is one of a very few presentation copies of the fourth Bond novel, other notable recipients being Noël Coward and John Hayward. A fine example.
