Provenance Agence de L'Indochine, Paris Former Collection of the artist, Mr Thang Tran Phenh Exhibited Seconda Mostra Internazionale d'Arte Coloniale, Napoli, Italy, 1932 S$120000-150000 US$72720-90900 An extremely rare piece from the early 1930's; the present Lot entitled La Petite Cuisiniere is drawn from a series of silk paintings representing the petits metiers (small labours) of North Vietnam. As the forefather of Vietnamese silk painting the quasi-entirety of Phan Chanh's oeuvre was created on silk, the artist's preferred technique. Favoring precision drawing and simple form over the much coveted impressionistic style sweeping through the Vietnam of the early 20th century, Phan Chanh remained attached throughout his career to traditional painting; inherited from his classic Sino-Vietnamese training and his more conservative approach to aesthetics in general. Phan Chanh particularly enjoyed picturing the fundaments of rural Vietnamese society, depicting its protagonists and everyday activities with a certain reserve that nevertheless were imbued with serenity. The following Lot displays, in the finest way, the artist's habitual use of a restrained chromatic palette - an amalgamation of sombre colors and diluted earth tones that he applied in bold patches. A further characteristic is the stillness and almost passive attitude we encounter in the contained expression of his figures. Absorbed by her work and pensive, the young cook here personifies the silence that characterizes Phan Chanh's authentic Vietnamese style.

VU CAO DAM 1908-2000 LA CONVERSATION Signed and dated 1944 lower right Ink and gouache on silk 61 by 81.5 cm.; 24 by 32 in. S$120000-180000 US$72720-109090 A delicate ink and gouache work rendered on silk, Vu Cao Dam's La Conversation is one of the rarities in the artist's repertoire that is seldom found today. When Vu Cao Dam first embarked on his artistic career, he favoured working on sculptures. It was only after studying in Paris that the artist seriously worked on paintings. Vu Cao Dam only painted on silk between 1931 and 1948 and concentrated on oil paintings thereafter. Furthermore, the limited period in which he devoted his efforts on silk painting overlapped with the Second World War, resulting in the limited number of the artist's surviving silk works. La Conversation, executed in 1944, is an excellent example of Vu Cao Dam's mastery with the medium. In style, the artist resembled Nguyen Phan Chanh's in that he used Chinese calligraphy to outline his figures but approached the composition from a Western perspective. However, whereas Phan Chanh employed more muted colours in earthy tones, Vu Cao Dam infused a softer and more pastel-toned palette into his silk paintings. In the present painting, the artist depicts three ladies lounging in the garden, their coiffures and ao dais indicate that they are Tonkinese. The figure on the far left is garbed in an aubergine-coloured ao dai, which perfectly compliments the olive-hued background. The middle figure wears a cream-colored ao dai, the brightness of which gives a certain luminosity to the painting that is echoed by the finely-detailed, delicate white flowers among the blades of grass. This relatively subdued palette, however, is brought to life with the introduction of her jadeite bangle - the green jade prominent against the cream fabric of her sleeve - and culminates with the third figure, who is dressed in brilliant aqua. The cream-coloured details on the latter's ao dai provides a sense of continuity and unity to the painting. Vu Cao Dam's background as a sculptor is evident in the slightly rounded, graceful and sensual lines of the figures, thus giving them delicate features which are even more enhanced by the by the nature of the medium. The gossamer characteristic of ink and gouache on silk easily exudes a soft and faintly misty atmosphere, thus giving the painting a most ethereal quality. It is interesting to note that La Conversation was executed shortly before the Second World War ended, when Paris had already been liberated. Although victory was not yet complete, the mood was indeed optimistic, as echoed by the tonality of the painting's sublime colours. Vu Cao Dam once remarked, "today where a multicultural and multiracial expression is researched, I think I have been amongst the first to try, in my work, to reconcile my oriental roots without disrupting tradition with my perception of the lessons given by studying the masters of Western culture." La Conversation not only exemplifies Vu Cao Dam's virtuosity but it also represents a Vietnamese man's journey of self discovery and the embodiment of Vietnamese soul - regardless of the influence of foreign cultures.
