Important Sports Memorabilia and Cards

There are four players in NBA history that have compiled 20,000 points, 10,000 rebounds and 4,000 assists: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Wilt Chamberlain, Karl Malone and Charles Barkley. But when the conversation turns to the exploits of Barkley, many people think first of the entertaining, sometimes outrageous commentary on basketball and life he provided. However, as a player he was the greatest anomaly in hoops history. Listed at 6-6, but probably actually closer to 6-4, he played power forward as well as anyone, often dominating players half a foot taller.  He was selected to the All-NBA First Team and All-NBA Second Team five times, and All-NBA Third Team once. In 1993, he was voted Most Valuable Player and during the NBA's 50th anniversary, named one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History. He competed in the 1992 and 1996 Olympic games, and won two gold medals as a member of the United States' legendary Dream Team. In 2006, his cumulative achievements earned him induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Barkley’s 1991 Philadelphia 76ers road mesh uniform bears tagging on the left tail that includes the "Champion" label with the year "1991" size “50,” and "Body Length +2." On the front of the jersey is the name "Philadelphia Sixers" and on the back is the name "Barkley" in white tackle twill. Barkley wore the number "32" for this one season in tribute to Magic Johnson. This number appears on both the front and back of the jersey in white tackle twill on a blue tackle twill backing. Barkley’s autograph appears on the back number "3" and on the right shoulder is a black armband commemorating the death of one of the 76ers employees. Included with the uniform are trunks. In the waistband is the "Champion" label with the year “1991” and "Inseam +1 Rise +2." The number "32" is written on this label in black magic marker.  This rare number 32 uniform worn in honor of Magic is an ideal Barkley game worn ensemble that symbolizes the deep friendship of two of the games greatest players. LOAs from MEARS (A5) and Grey Flannel.

Ervin “Magic” Johnson was the inspirational leader for the 1992 Olympic Men’s Basketball team. Magic had shocked the world on November of 1991 with his announcement that he’d contracted HIV and had to immediately retire. While he was retired and without playing a regular season game the NBA fans elected him to the 1992 All-Star game, he played. Magic knew if the opportunity to play for his country arose, he’d take it. When professional athletes were allowed to participate in the Olympic Games, Magic knew he had his chance. This 1992 Olympic "Dream Team" blue mesh jersey was made for use by Magic Johnson during Olympic competition. The games were played in Barcelona during the summer of 1992. On the left tail is the "Champion" exclusive label reading "1992 Summer Olympic Games" and next to this is the "Champion" label with the size "44." On the inside left tail is the "3 Extra Body Length" label. On the front of the shirt is the "USA Basketball" ironed on emblem and on the back is the name "Johnson" in white ironed on letters. The player number "15" appears on both the front and back of the jersey in red on white ironed on numbers. On the upper left front is the "Champion" logo. LOAs from MEARS (A5) and Grey Flannel.

Best known for his brilliantly colored, stunningly energetic images, LeRoy Neiman is probably the most popular living sports artist in the United States. Over the last five decades he has painted such illustrious athletes as Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Joe Namath, Sandy Koufax, Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods and many others. His work has been displayed in the Baseball, Basketball, Football, Boxing and Tennis Halls of Fame. Additionally, Neiman's paintings and drawings are in more than 40 museums around the world, including the Smithsonian, the Chicago Art Institute and the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, Russia. While the market for Neiman serigraphs bustles, opportunities to acquire his original paintings from which they are produced are infrequent. This is Neiman’s original painting, entitled “Magic,” painted by the artist in 1988. Executed at the apex of one of the most compelling personal and team rivalries in sports history, the work depicts legendary combatants Magic Johnson and Larry Bird in action. Purchased by our consignor in Neiman’s presence on the night of it’s 1988 unveilling at the Upstairs Gallery in Orange County, California, it is arguably Neiman’s most important work on the subject of basketball. In August of 2002, the painting was placed on loan to the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts. The painting made its debut there on September 5, 2002 on the historic night of Earvin “Magic” Johnson’s induction, and resided there until March 2007. Measuring 34 ½” by 51 ½”, the oil on canvas painting is artist signed in the lower left and framed. Notations on the back of the canvas include “Best of The West vs. The Beast of The East," the names of the subjects depicted, “Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Abdul-Jabbar, McHale”, and the signature of Abdul-Jabbar. Neiman’s stature in the genre of modern sports art, and the subject, quality, and provenance of this work make it one of the most significant basketball paintings known.Letter of provenance from the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame accompanies.

Whether it was a behind-the-back pass to a streaking James Worthy, a half-court swish at the buzzer or a smile that illuminated an arena, everyone who saw Magic Johnson play took with them an indelible memory of what they had witnessed. Magic Johnson accomplished virtually everything a player could dream of during his 13-year NBA career, all of which was spent with the Los Angeles Lakers. He was a member of five championship teams. He won the Most Valuable Player Award and the Finals MVP Award three times each. He was a 12-time All-Star and a nine-time member of the All-NBA First Team. He surpassed Oscar Robertson's career assists record, a mark he later relinquished to John Stockton, and won a gold medal with the original Dream Team at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. Magic’s Los Angeles Lakers road warm up jacket was manufactured by Champion, and is properly tagged throughout. The NBA’s Centennial patch on the lower front positively dates the jacket to 1991, Magic’s last full season in the league. Game wear is evident, and the jacket shows no alterations of any kind. LOA from Grey Flannel.
