Led Zeppelin Led Zeppelin ... At the Rock Pile. August 18 "Mighty Monday." [Toronto, 1969] Poster (633 x 437 mm) printed in pink and black and laid down on cardboard; foxing at margins. "The Zeppelin is the Only Way to Fly-Higher" An attractive promotional poster for two shows on 18 August 1969 at The Rock Pile in Toronto. 18 August was also, of course, the last night of Woodstock. Zeppelin had been invited to play the festival but turned it down, preferring to book a series of headlining shows during the dates, with manager Peter Grant stating, "I said no because at Woodstock we'd have just been another band on the bill."

Led Zeppelin Led Zeppelin. Atlantic Records, 1970 LP in the original sleeve (catalogue number SD 8216), signed on the sleeve by Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Bonham, and John Paul Jones, runout number MX162944 on Side A and MX162945 on Side B; sleeve cleanly split at seams, front cover laminated, some very minor abrasions, light creasing and ringwear. [With:] A signed letter of authenticity from James Spence Authentication. A signed copy of Led Zeppelin’s debut album. After the beak up of The Yardbirds on 7 July 1968, with the departure of Keith Relf, Jim McCarty, and subsequently Chris Dreja, Jimmy Page began to search for the musicians who could join him in a new vision he had for a band—“a new sort of collage of sound”—which he originally planned to dub The New Yardbirds. The first singer he sought out was Terry Reid, but he declined the opportunity due to recording contracts, and in turn recommended the then-unknown Robert Plant, who he had seen perform in Band of Joy. Page and Plant quickly realized they had great chemistry and began to work together on new material at Page's home in Pangbourne. Plant suggested his former bandmate John Bonham to fill the open role for a drummer, and soon the group that would become the biggest band of the 1970s was formed. The quartet first rehearsed together on 19 August 1968 before embarking on a tour of Denmark, Sweden, and Norway, from 7-24 September. At the time they were calling themselves "The New Yardbirds," though a number of shows still billed them simply as "The Yardbirds." While the tour was not financially successful, the whole band felt enlivened by the shows and left the audiences wanting more. Page later recalled that after the tour, they decided that this new musical energy required that they change their name: "We realised we were working under false pretences, the thing had gone quickly beyond where The Yardbirds had left off. We all agreed there was no point in retaining the New Yardbirds tag so when we got back from Scandinavia we decided to change the name ... It was a fresh beginning for us all" (Lewis and Pallett, p. 12). Immediately upon returning to London, the band entered the studio to record their first album. Page fronted the costs, as they had yet to sign a record deal, and as such they tried to record and master the album as fast as possible—completing one of rock's most legendary and influential records in 36 hours (over several days). Shortly after leaving the studio, they received a cease and desist letter from Dreja over the usage of the Yardbirds name, which cemented their need for a new name. They ran with "Led Zeppelin"—dropping the "a" out of "lead" for fear it may be mispronounced—because, on one account, it struck Page as "the perfect combination of heavy and light, combustibility and grace." With a new name and an eponymous record in tow, their manager Peter Grant inked them a $143,000 advance from Atlantic Records—the biggest record deal for a rock band to that date. Their debut features some of Led Zeppelin's greatest songs, including "Good Times Bad Times," "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You," "Dazed and Confused," and "Communication Breakdown." Though it initially received an unfavorable critical reception, it was a commercial success and word quickly spread that the band was a great live act—garnering more fans with each show. The album is now considered one of the greatest and most influential rock records of all time. The present copy is the Australian issue of Led Zeppelin, which was released in 1970 following the original 1969 UK release.

Led Zeppelin — Jimmy Page Jimmy Page owned and worn crushed velvet trousers from the 1969 tour Men’s purple velvet trousers, marked 32 in ink inside the waist next to the Alkasura Clothing label; minor wear and some light fading. Boutique clothier Alkasura was founded in 1967 by Paul Reeves and John Lloyd. In 1969 the partners split, with Reeves establishing the shop Universal Witness (1969-1973) on Fulham Road, while Lloyd moved into 304 Kings Road, Chelsea. Alkasura attracted a very fashion-forward Rock clientele, including Rod Stewart, Marc Bolan and Page. Clothing from Alkasure, like articles from other 60’s designers such as Granny Takes a Trip are now highly collectible fashion, with Bolan’s Elephant jacket by the former being quite iconic. Images from Led Zeppelin’s 1969 tour capture Page onstage with the same style velvet trousers in a slightly lighter shade, while performing in Paris and and a small club gig in Toronto. Page wears this pair, holding his Danelectro, on the cover of an unofficial Zeppelin DVD of the 1969 tour. With a letter of provenance from a fan, who after attending the band’s 2 November, 1969 show at the O’Keefe Center in Toronto with her sister, was invited with her friends to the Royal York Hotel to ‘hang out.” After discussing the their mutual interest in the tarot and having her palm read, Page offered her the choice of clothing as memento of their encounter. She choose the present pair, as she had “never seen anything quite them here in Canada.”

Paiste symphonic gong with early Paiste Chinese character logo with diameter measuring 36 in. Stage-used by Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham. Hammered metal gong with air travel stickers affixed and “ZEPPELIN” airbrushed in white on reverse. Suspended via two holes and attached rope in top rim. Gong exhibits stage-use, as indicated by the concave indentation from repeated banging of the gong, as well as noticeable char from Bonham’s practice of setting the gong on fire during the band’s live performances. The present gong was used on stage at London’s Royal Albert Hall in 1970.

Swan Song Records: 1976 LP in original gatefold sleeve (catalogue number SSK59402), signed by John Bonham on the front cover, spine lettered in black, upper cover embossed with "Led Zeppelin | Presence," back cover with embossed Apollo logo at the lower left corner, with the original printed inner sleeve, LP variant 4 (stamped matrix numbers SSK-59402-A2 and SSK-59402-B2, with "ATLANTIC STUDIOS" etched on the A-side); some very minor creasing to the sleeve's rear cover and a few stray marks, inner sleeve with mild foxing and small splits along edges. [With:] A signed letter of authenticity from James Spence Authentication. The first UK pressing of Led Zeppelin's seventh studio album, signed by John Bonham. The artwork for Presence depicts various scenes of people interacting with a black obelisk-like object, referred to on the inner sleeve as "The Object." Storm Thorgersen, co-founder of Hipgnosis, the firm which designed the sleeve, stated that The Object represented the power of Led Zeppelin.

An original poster for the Atlanta International Pop Festival. The organizers for the event included Chris Cowing, Robin Conant, and Alex Cooley, the latter of which was responsible for organizing the Texas International Pop Festival (as well as the Atlanta festival's successor). Massive crowds turned out in the sweltering heat to see Janis Joplin, Joe Cocker, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Led Zeppelin, and others.

DENNIS LARKINS has a varied design career, which spans movies and television, live entertainment and themed attractions as well as graphics, illustration and fine art. His entertainment industry work has included large-scale outdoor rock and roll concert sets for such major groups as The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, The Grateful Dead, and The Eagles, among many others. The next step in his career was theme park design, including various Disney attractions such as nightclubs for Pleasure Island and exhibits for Innoventions. Other examples of Dennis' contribution to popular culture include his work as art director for Warner Bros. Stores and creative producer for Sega GameWorks themed video arcades. He has recently designed a variety of exhibits for Disney and the Eastman Kodak Company.
