Companion and Flayed Blush

The brand, A Bathing Ape ('BAPE') was founded by Nigo (Tomoaki Nagao), one of the pioneers of the streetwear movement. Recognised for its military camouflage patterns and urahara aesthetic, the brand favours vibrant colours and bold graphics in their streetwear design and lifestyle accessories. Through early collaborations with international brands such as Stüssy and adidas, BAPE quickly established itself as one of Japan’s leading cultural trendsetters. This pair is not only an extremely rare pair of BAPE x KAWS FS-029 Chompers from the height of BAPEs influence, but is also from Nigo’s personal collection. Nigo is, to this day, one of the most relevant international personalities in the design, fashion and art world. He has collaborated with a wide range of powerhouse fashion brands such as Uniqlo, Louis Vuitton, and is now the creative director of Kenzo, and has worked with icons like Pharrell Williams, Futura, Kanye West and Virgil Abloh. He is also a world renowned art collector with private museums and ateliers in Japan where industry insiders are often invited. This particular piece was designed in collaboration with American artist &amp; designer KAWS, whose work features heavily in Nigo’s art collection. In 2017, KAWS worked with Jordan Brand to produce four Swooshless Air Jordan 1 Lows, each designed to match his daily uniforms. “I’ve worn and killed many pairs of them over the years (and still have many left) and they were never intended or available for sale,” KAWS stated on Instagram. This pair features a seamless upper in ultra-tumbled leather with an elephant print-like texture across the model. Monochromatic from head to toe, the sneakers are accented with KAWS’ signature “XX” logo on the heel and his artwork printed on the insole. The removal of the Nike Swoosh across the profile gives the design a unique identity, while the classic AJ1 rubber midsole and outsole are finished in a matching tonal color. Born in 1974, KAWS studied illustration at the School of Visual Arts in New York and briefly worked as a freelance illustrator on projects including Disney’s 101 Dalmatians and the animated series Daria and Doug.
