Winner of the 1957 Pulitzer Prize for biography, Profiles in Courage in many ways helped establish the bona fides for the then young Senator from Massachusetts, who would just three years later win the White House. A study of "that most admirable of human virtues," it remains beloved. This copy is inscribed to Eugene Clague, longtime commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics (1946-1965). In his oral history interview for the JFK Presidential Library, Clague recalled: "[Kennedy and I] were in the government and conducting our regular business [...] when he was a senator. I don't remember all the occasions on which our paths crossed, but I do recall meeting him and his wife [Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy] once at a White House reception, where he was dancing, and I was dancing with my wife [Dorothy Whipple Clague], and he invited me to come down to see him at the Senate. It happened also that Ted Sorensen [Theodore C. Sorensen], his administrative assistant, was at that time married to the daughter of one of my closest friends, Edgar Palmer [Edgar Zavitz Palmer] and his wife [Opal Yarbrough Palmer] [... ] So I knew something about Senator Kennedy, and in fact, I have an autographed copy of his Profiles in Courage."

Kennedy.</li></ul> Arthur Krock (1886-1974), the “Dean of Washington Newsmen,” was Washington correspondent and bureau chief for The New York Times and wrote the “In the Nation” column. He was a close friend and political ally of Joe Kennedy and his children. He advised John F. Kennedy with the revisions of his 1939 senior honors paper, "Appeasement in Munich,” in preparation for its publication the following year. It was Krock who suggested the new title, Why England Slept, a response to Churchill’s While England Slept. Krock would continue to advise the young Kennedy, who thanked him In the Preface to Profiles in Courage. Ted Kennedy wrote admiringly of Krock in his tribute volume to his father: “Mr. Krock has long been one of the most respected newsmen and columnists in Washington. He won two Pulitzer Prizes for his work. He met Dad [Joseph Kennedy] during the New Deal years and won his deep admiration. Travell (1901-1997) was a New York physician was and medical researcher. She was appointed the personal physician to President John F. Kennedy in 1961. She graduated from Wellesley College and Cornell University Medical College. She was the first female doctor to be the personal physician to a sitting United States president and retained that post until March,1965. Her specialty was treating muscular pain. Kennedy's injuries from WW II were the beginnings of his back pain problems. She helped him in the late 1950s so much that he chose her as his personal physician while he was in the White House. The photo is accompanied by a small typed note on White House stationery signed by Tavell which explains that this photo was taken when the Kennedys were in Mexico at the end of June, 1962.

Mitchell (1923–2003) was a Republican U.S. Congressman from New York who served from 1973 to 1983. A World War II Army veteran, he later became involved in local politics and served in the New York State Assembly before his election to Congress. During his time in the House of Representatives, Mitchell focused on veterans' affairs, defense, and agriculture, reflecting the needs of his upstate New York constituency. Known for his moderate Republican views, he was respected for his pragmatic approach to legislation. After leaving Congress, he remained active in public service and community affairs until his death.
