Fleming originally devised Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang as a bedtime story for his son, Caspar, before writing it up during his recovery from a heart attack. As his typewriter had been taken away from him, Fleming composed the three stories in pencil, making Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang his only published work written by hand. The first volume was published two months after his death, before being adapted into a comic strip, and later made into the 1968 film of the same name. John Burningham (1936-2019) was approached to illustrate Chitty as a result of his picture book debut Borka, which won the 1963 Kate Greenaway Medal. He based the design of Chitty on a sketch by Fleming's motor engineer friend Charles Amherst Villiers. Ian Fleming Thunderball. London: Jonathan Cape, 1961 8vo, FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, binding A, original dark brown cloth, lettered in gilt, design to upper cover in blind, original dust-jacket by Richard Chopping, housed in black quarter morocco clamshell case by the Chelsea Bindery, a few light dampstains to edges, blue ink stains to bottom edge and rear endpapers, spine ends bumped, ink stains to dust-jacket, creased at extremities and chipped at corners with a 22mm tear at head A REMARKABLE COPY, ANNOTATED BY KEVIN MCCLORY, THE MAN DUBBED "IAN FLEMING'S NEMESIS". This book was used in the legendary legal battle between McClory and Fleming. McClory sued Fleming shortly before the publication of Thunderball, claiming that the novel was plagiarised by a screenplay written by himself and Jack Whittingham in 1958. This is the copy from the files of Farrer & Co., Fleming's solicitors. It is annotated by McClory in pencil, then overwritten in pen, highlighting the plagiarised passages and asserting ownership of ideas. See, for example, McClory's statement on the title page: "Entire story obviously | the property of XANADU | PARTNERSHIP", referencing McClory's film production company formed along with Ivar Bryce, Fleming's fellow defendant. On page 46, McClory claims that SPECTRE, the international crime organisation introduced in the novel, was his own invention: "The use of the group sprang from | my original thought that Mafia etc., | not highly successful Box Office material". At the back of the book, McClory has listed the page numbers containing plagiarised content, with a note reading "105 pages out of 254 substantially film story". The case was settled out of court in 1963, with credit given to McClory and Whittingham. Presumably written by one of Fleming's lawyers as a first suggestion for how to credit the plaintiffs, an annotation in pencil reads: "The story incorporates incidents from a screen | play which was the joint work of Ian Fleming, | Jack Whittingham & Kevin McClory." The final wording, published in subsequent editions of Thunderball, amended the order of names, reading "based on the screen treatment by Kevin McClory, Jack Whittingham, and Ian Fleming." The stress of the court case was said to have had a profound effect on Fleming's health; he suffered two heart attacks during proceedings, and nine months after the trial had ended, died of a third. Hughie secured Ian a job at Rowe & Pitman, though Hughie would come to describe him as "among the world's worst stockbrokers". Their friendship continued, both on and off the golf course. (3) H. A. Fleming first met Blanshard in Colombo, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) in 1944. The nature of their longstanding relationship has been subject to much speculation, with several biographers suggesting that the pair were lovers, though this view is not shared by Nicholas Shakespeare in his 2023 biography of Fleming. First mentioned in Casino Royale, these cigarettes were specially made for Fleming himself, who evidently based Bond's smoking habits on his own. The author smoked over 60 a day of the same mix, and Morland went on to market cigarettes under James Bond's name (with the box labelled "James Bond Special No.1 | The Exclusive Balkan Cigarette | By Permission of IAN FLEMING"). "He lit his first cigarette, a Balkan and Turkish mixture made for him by Morland's of Grosvenor Street" (Casino Royale). The pair likely met working for Kemsley Newspapers, owned by Berry's father, who hired Fleming as the Foreign Manager in 1945. Diamonds Are Forever was the first of the James Bond novels to feature a pictorial dust-jacket, and the first to be illustrated by Pat Marriott. The three previous wrappers, all executed by Ken Lewis, featured simpler typographic and/or patterned designs. Fleming had appropriated the nickname "Boofy" from his wife's cousin Lord Arran, who was known as Arthur "Boofy" Gore. Unfortunately, the character Fleming chose was a particularly unpleasant one, and upset Lord Arran. Fleming apologised and - for the only time - revised the character's name in the proof stage from "Gore" to "Kidd". Marshall wrote to Fleming to alert him of his error, also requesting a signed copy of his latest novel. Fleming responded on 8 October 1957: "Thank you very much for your letter of November 3rd and I am delighted that you enjoy the adventures of James Bond. Alas, attributing “Vent Vert” to Dior was nearly as bad as when, in one of my books, I made Bond eat asparagus with Sauce Bearnaise instead of Mousseline. I have also been severely reprimanded for having provided, in my last book, the Orient Express with hydraulic brakes instead of vacuum ones. If I go on like this I shall one day find myself giving my heroine green hair. Of course I will certainly autograph a book for you. The name of my last one was “From Russia, With Love”. This present copy was sent to Miss Marshall alongside the above letter, meaning it was likely one of the first 25 copies delivered to Jonathan Cape on the 8th November 1957, three weeks before the official publication date. In the context of an inscription to Cavendish, a passionate equestrian and racehorse owner of some repute, the curious phrase "To hack [i.e. ride at a steady pace] over!" makes sense. Bart penned the lyrics for the From Russia With Love theme song, and Barry composed/arranged the rest of the soundtrack. As he remarked to Cape in the run-up to the publication of Casino Royale: "I have designed a jacket of exquisite symmetry and absolute chastity... I bet your other authors don't work as hard for you as I do" (quoted in Shakespeare, p. 488). Kenneth Lewis (1926-2013) produced the dust-jacket designs for the first three Bond novels. He and Fleming were colleagues at Kemsley Newspapers in the early 1950s. Casino Royale was written in early 1952 at Goldeneye, Fleming's tropical hideaway on Jamaica's north shore. "Of the conception of this most famous of debuts Fleming repeatedly said that it was written to take his mind off his forthcoming marriage yet as early as the end of the war, following his decommission from a successful career in Naval Intelligence, Fleming had told Ivar Bryce that he would settle down to write 'the spy novel to end all spy novels'..." Fleming used this device only when inscribing the book to his closest friends and colleagues. The first Bond novel Casino Royale was published as a Pan edition in 1955 and each subsequent Bond novel would be published by Pan, as well as Fleming’s other three books The Diamond Smugglers, Thrilling Cities and Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang. In The Man With the Golden Typewriter, letters between Fleming and Forshaw are included on pages 319, 321, 322 and 371. It also appears that Fleming consulter Forshaw about the details of Bond’s Bentley Continental. The car was owned by Fleming and was driven and one by Bond in the film Thunderball. One of the letters from The Man With The Golden Typewriter from Forshaw to Fleming is an invite to an awards dinner to celebrate the fact that Casino Royale has sold over a million copies. By the 1960’s Pan was the second-largest paperback publisher (after Penguin), largely thanks to the phenomenal global success of Ian Fleming and his James Bond series.
