BILLON, FRANÇOIS DE. [Le Fort inexpugnable de l’honneur du Sexe Femenin, construit par Françoys de Billon Secretaire. Paris: Jean Dallier, 1 April 1555] A splendid binding for Peter Ernst, Graf (after 1594, Fürst) von Mansfeld-Vorderort (1517–1604), the covers decorated with his armorial insignia, a motto (of unexplained meaning) “Force m’est trop,” his name (Mansfelt), a capital M, and a variety of daisies, these perhaps a reference to his wife, Marguérite de Bréderode, who had died in 1554. The date 1555 is lettered at the foot of the spine. A soldier and then imperial Governor of the provinces of Luxembourg and Namur, Mansfeld was captured by French troops during the siege of Ivoix (Carignan), and imprisoned in 1552 by Henri II and the Connétable Anne de Montmorency in the tower of the castle of Vincennes. Charles V refused to pay his ransom, and Mansfeld remained there for five years. With the presumed help of his valet de chambre, Jehan-Henri, he diverted himself by collecting books, each luxuriously bound for him in Paris. Once rehabilitated by Philip II, Mansfeld seemingly lost all interest in luxurious bindings, and engrossed himself in building a palace at Luxembourg-Clausen (still unfinished upon his death in 1604, now demolished). Altogether, twenty-two volumes from Mansfeld’s library are known. Nineteen of these were published in 1978 by Émile Van der Vekene and Howard Nixon, with the latter crediting them all to a single craftsman, dubbed the “Mansfeld Binder.” (Paul Needham doubts that the bindings can be credited to a single shop; see Twelve Centuries of Bookbindings 400–1600, pp. 206–208.) The shop was patronized by the leading Paris bibliophiles of the day: Henri II, Jean Grolier, Thomas Mahieu, and Marc Laurin. In 1982, Van der Vekene, published two more bindings, one from the shop of the Mansfeld Binder, the other perhaps bound by Claude de Picques, and in 2006, a binding was discovered by Jean-Marc Chatelain in the Bibliothèque Méjanes. Only two of these twenty-two volumes are in private ownership: the present binding, and one at Wormsley in the Getty Library (acquired in our rooms, 5 December 1991, £308,000). Two of Mansfeld’s books are in Latin, and the rest, mostly histories or chronicles, are in French. This volume contains the first edition a defense of women by the so-called “historian” of the Querelle des femmes, a work renowned for the extreme misogyny that Billon attributes to Rabelais. The author (1522–1566) was secretary to the diplomat Cardinal Jean du Bellay-Langey and signs the dedicatory epistle to Catherine de’ Medici, at Rome, 1550. The privilege is dated 1 April 1555 (style de Pâques) and although dated “1555” on the spine, the year of printing and binding was 1556. Nixon organized the volumes he bound for Mansfeld in three groups, placing the present volume in the third, and “most interesting,” group, as it foreshadows the development of the fanfare style. The binding features the simpler of three armorial blocks (Nixon I), without a crest, and with the head of the sheep pointing correctly to the left. Fabienne Le Bars has compared some of the tools used with those employed on three bindings executed 1546–1549 in a shop working for Thomas Wotton. 4to (248 x 167 mm). Roman type, italic shoulder notes, 37 lines plus headline. Ruled in red. (Lacking title and conjugate A4, 100 x 82 mm hole (repaired) in first leaf, where an early inscription was probably removed, possibly the author’s signature, as some copies were signed by him.) Binding: Parisian tan calf (255 x 180 mm), 1556, for Peter Ernst, Graf von Mansfeld-Vorderort, probably by the eponymous Mansfeld Binder, 3 gilt fillets around sides, black painted band between two of these, interlaced double gilt fillets, filled with black paint, forming 12 rectangles, each containing a gilt marguerite polychromed in red and brown, central oval cartouche containing arms of Mansfeld painted red and silver within the collar of the Toison d’Or, surmounted by a rectangle containing “. M . | FORCE . MEST . | TROP .” and below, in a smaller partial rectangle, “MANSFELT .,” in the interstices a sémé of 3 gold dots, spine with 6 full and 2 half bands, richly gilt, title of 3 lines in compartment below upper half band “FORT … |… SEX … |… EME …”, the date “.1.5.5.5.” in compartment above lower half band, original edges of boards with alternating gilt fillet and gilt hashes pulled up to edges of cover as if the binding has shrunk, edges gilt and gauffered to an arabesque design. Jefferson, Thomas Printed document signed (“ThJefferson”) as Secretary of State, being an official printing of “An Act respecting the Government of the Territories of the United States North West and South of the River Ohio.” [Philadelphia: Printed by Francis Childs and John Swaine, 1792] One page (408 x 242 mm) on a bifolium of fine laid paper (watermarked Posthorn | HS Sandy Run), the Act approved 8 May 1792 at the first session of the Second Congress; lightly browned and foxed, some fold separations with a few mends on verso, a bit of marginal chipping. A very rare printing of an early United States law respecting the recently organized Northwest Territory, bearing the printed signatures of President George Washington, Speaker of the House of Representatives Jonathan Trumbull, and President pro tempore of the Senate Richard Henry Lee, as well as the holograph signature of Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson. The present Congressional Act deals with the laws and government of the Northwest Territory: “Be it enacted … That the laws of the territory north west of the river Ohio, that have been or hereafter may be enacted by the governor and judges thereof, shall be printed under the direction of the secretary of state, and two hundred copies thereof, together with ten sets of the laws of the United States, shall be delivered to the said governor and judges, to be distributed among the inhabitants for their information, and that a like number of the laws of the United States shall be delivered to the governor and judges of the territory south west of the river Ohio. “And it be it further enacted, That the governor and judges of the territory northwest of the river Ohio shall be, and hereby are authorized to repeal their laws by them made, whensoever the same may be found to be improper. “And be it further enacted, That the official duties of the secretaries of the said territories shall be under the control of such laws, as are or may be in force of said territories. “And be it further enacted, That ay one of the supreme or superior judges of the said territories, in the absence of the other judges, shall be and hereby is authorized to hold a court. “And be it further enacted, That the secretary of state, provide proper seals for the several and respective public offices in the said territories. “And be it further enacted, That the limitation act, passed by the governor and judges of the said territory, the twenty-eighth day of December, one thousand seven hundred and eighty eight, be and hereby is disapproved.” The final provision of the Act ensures that expenses incurred by John Cleve Symmes and George Turner, two judges of the territory, will be reimbursed by the United States Treasury. Other expenses were involved as well. On 12 July 1792, Jefferson wrote to Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton to inform him that “By an act of Congress passed on the last day of their session it was made the duty of the Secretary of state to have seals prepared for the courts of the two Western governments, but nothing particular was said as to the resource for making payment for them. I have therefore to ask the favor of information from you whether there are any funds which you should think it justifiable to apply to the payment of these objects. I assume they will amount to several hundred dollars (Papers of Alexander Hamilton, ed. Syrett, vol. 12, p. 28). Individual acts and bills of Congress were routinely printed for public distribution but there was a provision to print a few large-paper copies of each act for official dissemination to the states which bore the Secretary of State's signature. The present copy is one of the large-paper issues. The only other signed, large-paper copy that we can find in the auction records or standard references was sold by the Elsie O. and Philip D. Sang Foundation nearly fifty years ago (Sotheby Parke Bernet, 14 November 1978, lot 444). The few copies located by Evans, ESTC, and OCLC are all printed on a more standard size of paper (340 x 210 mm) and are not signed by Jefferson. These routine issues can also be easily distinguished because they include on the same sheet, beneath the Northwest Territory Act, the text of “An act to compensate the services of the late Colonel George Gibson,” which is not printed here. Venice: Gabriele Giolito de Ferrari, 1544 Thirty of these bindings featuring a gold-tooled coat of arms of a rampant lion supporting a fleur-de-lis in his dexter paw are now recorded, all but one on Italian texts, the great majority printed in the decade 1560–1569. Each has a title lettered horizontally on the spine, in the top or in the second compartment, indicating that it stood on the shelf in the modern way, upright, back facing out. On twenty-nine bindings the initials “I” and “R” flank the armorial cartouche; on one (a Latin text), the arms stand alone. The arms were twice misidentified: in 1859, as belonging to James V of Scotland, or to James I of England (whilst James VI of Scotland); in 1870, as belonging to the Bouffier family in France. However, by 1891 it was recognized that they are the arms of the Ruiz, a family of Spanish origin, resident in Rome (the surname Italianized as Ruis). In 1926, G.D. Hobson listed four Ruiz bindings, Anthony Hobson in 1953 raised that number to seven, and by 1965 “about ten” of “these famous bindings” were known. In 1975, Anthony Hobson identified 23 bindings, and in 2004 Michel Wittock added another (A. Hobson, Apollo and Pegasus, Appendix IX; Wittock, “Une reliure inédite pour Jeronimo Ruiz,” pp.217–222). Since then, more volumes have come to light (see list below). The Ruiz octavos are simply decorated, with gilt fillet borders and floral tools in the corners. The quartos are more elaborately tooled, some having broad frames, others an arabesque centerpiece and/or corner-pieces. The cartouche or shield enclosing the rampant lion and fleur-de-lis varies, likewise the rampant lion tool. In 1975, Anthony Hobson assigned the bindings to three different shops, of which Maestro Luigi’s was one; when he reconsidered the matter, in 1991, he concluded that they were produced in a single workshop, which he called the “Ruiz Binder,” presuming him to be the successor to Luigi (Hobson & Culot, p. 49). The smaller cartouche enclosing the Ruiz arms also appears on bindings for Pope Pius V, however there are no other tools in common, and it is uncertain whether the Ruiz Binder was employed by the Vatican. A cartouche used on the larger Ruiz bindings (formed of winged caryatids, with a bull’s head at base) appears on a copy of the 1562 Valgrisi Orlando furioso bound for Jacopo Annibale Altemps (Graf Jakob Hannibal von Ems; 1530–1587), now at the Houghton Library (Typ 525 62.157). G.D. Hobson had first drawn attention to the Ruiz family chapel in the Roman church of S. Caterina della Rosa dei Funari, where their lion and fleur-de-lis insignia adorn the pilasters and are molded into the stucco of the chapel arch. In the pavement outside the chapel is a ledger stone recording details of several family members, which enabled Antony Hobson in 1975 to identify “I.R.” as Girolamo (Jéronimo) Ruiz. This slab, laid presumably in 1605, is inscribed with a shield bearing the Ruiz arms, the names and dates of two family members: Abate Filippo (Felipe) Ruiz (1512–18 May 1582), who had endowed the chapel, and commissioned its decoration from Girolamo Muziano and Federico Zuccari; and his great nephew, Pietro (Pedro) Ruiz (1573–29 August 1605). Girolamo Ruiz is named thereon as paying for the upkeep of the chapel. Abate Filippo had trained as a priest and as a lawyer, perhaps in his native Valencia. In Rome, he became archpriest in absentia of Teruel (Zaragoza), Scrittore delle lettere of the Penitenzieria Apostolica, Correttore of the Archivio della Curia Romana, and held other offices. Together with the noble and wealthy Spaniards Luis Torres and Alfonso Diaz, he was a member of the charitable association of Confraternita delle vergini miserabili di S. Caterina della Rosa, founded ca. 1543 with the support of Ignatius of Loyola, Filippo Neri, Gaetano da Thiene, and Cardinal Gian Pietro Carafa (later Paul IV). In testaments written in 1566 and in 1576, Abate Filippo made his nephew Girolamo his sole heir, charging him with responsibility for maintaining the Ruiz chapel in S. Caterina dei Funari. Girolamo Ruiz was the elder son of Alessandro Ruiz, deputato of the Scuola di San Giovanni Evangelista in Venice, and Taddea Centanni. Born in Venice, he was elected a citizen of Rome by the Consiglio ordinario on 30 July 1565. In a deposition made on 23 December 1610, Girolamo claims to be aged 68, so he probably was born in 1542. He married Virginia (ca. 1578–1611), daughter of the rich Roman banker Giovanni Angelo Crivelli, with whom he had three children: Pietro, a member of the Congregazione dell’Assunta, who died in 1605, aged 32, and was interred in S. Caterina dei Funari; Caterina; and Gaspare. Girolamo occupied high offices in the municipal administration, and in 1571, was one of two sindaci of the Arciconfraternita del Gonfalone. Girolamo’s residence was the Palazzo Ruiz, situated between via Giuseppe Zanardelli, via degli Acquasparta, and via della Maschera d’Or, with frontage on the Piazza Fiammetta. He had obtained the property and its opulent contents in 1556, by fidecommesso, upon the death of his great uncle, the apostolic protonotary Girolamo di Belisando Ruiz, and he lived there until 1605. Together with his brother, Michele, he ran a literary salon, and probably also held private musical parties (ridotti). The playwright Cristoforo Castelletti dedicated his Rime spirituali (Venice: Heirs of Melchiorre Sessa, 1582) to Girolamo, describing his patron’s household as a “veritable home for the muses and a permanent refuge, where all virtuosi can escape and as it were a safe port from the tempests. …” The brothers were joint-dedicatees of Antonio Ongaro’s Alceo fauola pescatoria … Recitata in Nettuno castello de’ signori Colonnesi: et non più posta in luce (Venice: Francesco Ziletti, 1582); about the same date, Ongaro dedicated his “Hospitium Musarum,” a poem in 397 hexameters describing the Palazzo Ruiz and its artworks, to little Pietro Ruiz. In 1584, Girolamo received the dedication of Casteletti’s Il furbo comedia (Venice: Alessandro Griffio, 1584) and of Luca Marenzio’s Quarto libro de madrigali a cinque voci. He possessed Strabo’s Geography, Caesar’s Commentaries, and works of ancient Roman history by Lucius Annaeus Florus, Polybius, Rufus Festus, Sallustius, and Thucydides, all in in Italian translation, also Bembo’s history of Venice, Biondo’s history of Europe from the plunder of Rome until his own time, Cieza De Leon and Zarate’s histories of Peru and Lopez de Gomara’s of India, all likewise in Italian. He owned Ringhieri’s book on courtly entertainments and Scandianese’s on hunting. He seems interested also in philosophy, owning copies of Diogenes Laertius’s Lives, Piccolomini’s compendium of moral philosophy, and similar works by Salviati and Thomagni and Ulloa. And, of course, he had a taste for literature, acquiring the anthologies of the poetry of Luigi Alamanni and Annibale Caro, Dante’s Divine Comedy, Ovid’s Metamorphoses, and Ruscelli’s collection of imprese. As dedicatee, Girolamo presumably was gifted copies of Castelletti and Ongaro’s books; however, those volumes either have been lost, or cannot be recognized. Hobson included in his list (no. 20) a Latin book, Maurolico’s Martyrology (1568) featuring the Ruiz arms but not the initials “I” and “R”. This book perhaps was bound for Girolamo’s uncle, Abate Filippo Ruiz. An empty binding, appended to the list below, displays the Ruiz arms surmounted by a mitre. Anthony Hobson dismissed this binding, for the reason that he could not identify a member of the family who was ordained bishop. At this time, however, priests with the protonotary apostolic title could wear regalia similar to a bishop, including a mitre. Several members of the Ruiz family apparently were Protonotari apostolici, among them Girolamo’s uncle, Abate Filippo, and great uncle Girolamo di Belisando Ruiz. Paris: Louis Blaublom (Cyaneus) for Jacques I Kerver, 20 August 1546 First edition of the first French translation of this famous archaeological-architectural romance, lavishly illustrated with woodcuts based on those designed for the first edition (Venice, 1499; see lots 381 and 382 in the sale of Bibliotheca Brookeriana, 12 October 2023), and fourteen new subjects. It is often considered one of the most beautiful books of the French Renaissance. The genesis of the translation (in fact, a condensed adaptation) is obscure. The editor, Jean Martin (ca. 1507–1553), claims in his dedicatory letter to Henri de Lenoncourt, that it was made by a “Gentilhomme vertueux, & de bon savoir,” adding, in the book’s preface, that he had needed to give it only finishing touches. Jacques Gohory, in a bitter preface to the second edition, published after Martin’s death by Kerver (1554; reprinted 1561), identifies the translator as “a knight from Malta, a cultured and talented man,” and insists that the translation was in his hands before Martin’s, who botched the job (Duché-Gavet, “Jacques Gohory’s copy of the Poliphile (1546): A first analysis of his handwritten marginalia,” in Marginal Notes: Social Reading and the Literal Margins [2000], pp. 21–40). Some modern critics doubt the existence of this Eques Meltensis, and credit Martin with crafting the entire book; others persist in uncovering his identity: the Lyonese humanist, Jean de Vauzelles (or his brother George), are the latest contenders. Martin, a self-styled “studieux d’architecture”, most certainly shaped the book. He was working, almost simultaneously, on French translations of the treatises on architecture by Serlio, Vitruvius, and Alberti, and he explicates here much architectural terminology, adds printed glosses and scholia in the margins (found on twenty-eight pages, and absent in the original), and strips from the text many non-architectural descriptions. New woodcuts of buildings and formal gardens are incorporated, and architectural or antique elements are placed in some others. The book nourished antiquarian fantasies and became a sort of model book for designers of ephemeral architecture and garden art. The blocks were cut by multiple cutters (Mortimer recognized four hands), one of whom might be Jean Goujon, the illustrator of Martin’s translation of Vitruvius (1547). A preparatory drawing for the title-block is associated with the Fontainebleau designer Luca Penni. This copy was bound for Marcus Fugger (1529–1597), the eldest son of Anton Fugger, head of the powerful textile trading, banking, and mining family based in Augsburg. Marcus matriculated in June 1546 at the Collegium Trilingue in Louvain, and began there to build a library, acquiring books both new and second-hand, sometimes inscribing on the pastedown of the upper cover his name or initials MF, a date, the adage O.R.V.E. (Omnium Rerum Vicissitudo Est, from Terentius Afer’s Eunuchus), and a drawing of the family arms. A few years later, Marcus was buying heavily in Paris, commissioning (until about 1552) large numbers of standard bindings, in brown calf, these simply decorated, often with the small tool of a hand holding a branch, upon which perches a bird, or a crowned double-headed eagle (for reproductions of three such bindings, see Hobson & Culot, Italian and French 16th-century Bookbindings, no. 41). He also commissioned exquisite bindings from the royal binder, Gomar Estienne, from Claude de Picques, and from a shop known as “Wotton Binder C”. He habitually wrote his name (“Marx Fugg.,” “Marcus Fugger,” or similar) on the paste-down of the upper cover, and some of his luxury bindings are tooled in gold with the letters O.R.V.E. and his initials. After his father’s death, in 1560, Marcus became leader of the firm, and thereafter his book purchases dwindled. Folio (331 x 214 mm). Paris: Jamet Mettayer, 1586 This binding is decorated on the back with the crowned royal arms of France within the collar of the order of Saint-Esprit and motto “Spes mea Deus” of Henri III. Once thought to denote Henri III’s personal ownership, it is now supposed that it and similar bindings were made for presentation to members of the four penitential confraternities the King had founded in the years 1583–1585. Some bindings feature tools which link them to a particular confraternity, others—like the present one—are nonspecific. It may be that the latter were bound at the King’s order for general use in the royal chapel. The statutes of the chivalric Ordre du Saint-Esprit founded by Henri III in 1578 had prescribed for its members (limited to one hundred) certain spiritual exercises, to be found in a book that the King was to give to them on their reception: Le Livre des statuts et ordonnances de l’ordre du benoist sainct Esprit (S. l. n. d.). It was not until 1583 that the intended book was published, “Par le commandement du Roy,” as a pocket-sized Latin Office of the Virgin (24mo format), featuring a set of French prayers contributed by the court poet Philippe Desportes (Lacombe, no. 476). On 20 March 1583, Henri III instituted the Congrégation royale des Pénitents de l’Association Notre-Dame, with an initial membership of three hundred confrères, including the King, courtiers, clergy of the royal court, and laity, one of whom was the royal printer, Jamet Mettayer. A year later, the King founded the Congrégation de l’Oratoire de Nostre-Dame de Vie-Saine (winter 1584), then the Confrérie de la mort et Passion de Notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ (spring 1585), and the Oratoire et compagnie du benoist Sainct François (December 1585). The need for books incorporating Tridentine forms of liturgical devotion was now acute. The 1583 Officium Beatae Mariae Virginis ad usum Romanum was reprinted by Jamet Mettayer in 1584, as L’Office de la Vierge Marie, in duodecimo format (Lacombe 480), and twice in 1586, in quarto format, now with engraved illustrations by Jean II Rabel and four new prayers by Philippe Desportes: Prière à Dieu (Souverain créateur du ciel et de la terre); Autre prière à Dieu (Seigneur Dieu qui par ta puissance); Prière aux saincts (Fleurs du Ciel …); Prière pour un parent, ou un amy défunct (Sauveur du monde) (see Rouget, “Une édition retrouvée de Philippe Desportes” in Bibliothèque d’Humanisme et Renaissance 75 [2013], pp. 341–353). Mettayer’s two quartos of 1586 are comprised of substantially the same sheets; one announces on its title-page: “Par le commandement du Roy” (Lacombe nos. 485–486). Editions in smaller format were published by Mettayer in 1586 and 1587 (Lacombe 487, 489). The Congrégations were dissolved upon Henri’s death (2 August 1589), if not before. The printed statutes of the royal devotional confraternities did not project publication of books expressly for their confrères, except Les Statuts et reigle de l’Oratoire et compagnie du benoist sainct François (1586), which proposed to publish a Psalter (if it appeared, no copy has survived). Although Mettayer issued books of hours identified on their title-pages as “pour la congregation roiale des Penitens de l’Annonciation de Nostre Dame” (Lacombe 473) and “pour les confreres de l’Oratoire Nostre Dame de Vie-Saine” (Lacombe 479), his editions of L’Office de la Vierge Marie and companion Le Pseaultier de David were implicitly for use by all the royal congregations of penitents. Accordingly, copies of Mettayer’s 1586 Le Pseaultier de David are found both in elaborately tooled bindings for members of the Confrérie de la mort (decorated by the Grim Reaper, skulls and crossbones, tears, etc.; Nixon, no. 55b), and in the “nonspecific” type of penitential binding, decorated by a Crucifixion medallion on the covers, with a skull, royal arms and motto on the spine. Copies of the 1586 Mettayer editions in quarto of L’Office de la Vierge Marie are seen in bindings for members of the Congrégation royale des Pénitents de l’Association Notre-Dame (these have an oval medallion of the Annunciation on upper cover, and a complex monogram of a form of their name; Nixon, no, 55a), for members of the Congrégation de l’Oratoire de Nostre-Dame de Vie-Saine (these are decorated by rows of interlaced Ps, and Vs and Ss; Nixon, no. 58), for members of the Confrérie de la mort (their usual “morbid trophies”; Joly, no. 76 & Pl. 18), and also in the “nonspecific” binding, as offered here. The Crucifixion medallion on our binding sometimes is associated with the Congrégation royale des Pénitents de l’Association Notre-Dame, but evidence is lacking (Coulet & Adeline, no. 6). The earliest owners of this copy left no recognizable marks of ownership, and its whereabouts is unknown before about 1910. He spent his adult years in Italy, dying in Padua at the age of 34. The anonymous Vita of this edition was long ascribed to Reginald Pole, but the attribution has been placed in doubt. The presumed first owner of this book, Antoine de Révilliasc, who styled his ownership with the “et amicorum” device, was promoted doctor of canon law at Bologna on 22 February 1533. He placed the same inscription, but dated 1535, in a Breviarium super Codice ([Lyon:] Nicolaus Philippi Pistoris and Marcus Reinhart, 13 November 1480), sold by Christie’s New York, 5 December 2006, lot 207. He became Prieur & Seigneur d’Aspres et de Montbrand 1541-1554 (Nicole Bingen, '"Aux escholles d'outre-monts": étudiants de langue française dans les universités italiennes'. Geneva 2018, pp. 2192-2193). 4to (209 x 138 mm). Italic type, 39 lines plus headline. Collation: a-u8 x4: 163 leaves. Woodcut Giunta device on title-page. Venice: Heirs of Ottaviano I Scoto, 12 April 1523 A volume containing three medieval commentaries on Aristotle’s metaphysics and cosmology, one edited by Marcantonio Zimara, professor of natural philosophy at Padua (1501–1509); another by Jacopo Filippo Pellenegra, a student at Padua of Nicoletto Vernia, then briefly professor there of medicine and natural sciences (1500–1501); and the third by Lucas de Subereto of Pisa—the trio contained in one of the most important and finest bindings of the Pillone library. The first owner of this copy may have been Odorico Pillone (1503–1594), the eldest son of Antonio Pillone (1464–1533), recorded as a student in Padua in 1527 (graduated in civil law, 25 June 1527). Three other schoolbooks bound in the same, anonymous shop belonged to Odorico: two by the jurist Bartolomeo Soccini, printed at Venice in 1523–1524 (nos. 5–6 in the List below), and one by Agostino Nifo, printed at Naples in 1511. No expense was lavished on their bindings: two are half-bound (wooden boards with a leather backstrip), with the Pillone family arms artlessly painted on their upper covers; all four have waste-sheets from other publications used as endleaves and pastedowns. Hobson supposed that the shop was situated in Padua, specialized in selling medical books and works of Aristotelian philosophy, and catered to impecunious students; the workshop has now been given the name The Alexander's Head Shop (A. Hobson, Decorated Bookbindings in Renaissance Italy, edited by Edward Potten and Mirjam Foot, forthcoming 2025). The Nifo and the present volume were bound in full-leather, their covers divided by quadruple blind fillets that cross over each other, forming equal squares (32 and 24 respectively). Each compartment of the Nifo is filled by a large fleur-de-lys. A medallion head of Alexander the Great was used on the Janduno, giving the appearance of a tray in a coin cabinet. The same medallion was used, sparingly, on the two half-leather bindings covering Soccini’s works (4 impressions on each cover), and on four bindings commissioned by other customers. These are a 1487 medical miscellany, a folio, in full leather, with the stamp filling a grid of 24 squares, as on the Janduno; a recueil of works by Ovid, printed 1508–1516, in full leather (2 impressions on each cover); the 1490 Lactantius, in full leather (2 impressions on each cover); and a 1523 Valerius Maximus (4 impressions on each cover). The circular stamp depicts a helmeted warrior facing right, lettered around * D * ALSO * (an abbreviation, perhaps, of “Divino Alessandro”), and encircled by a wreath. Hobson could identify no direct prototype—neither a coin, nor a medal—and surmised that the image might be derived from a (lost) cameo of Minerva belonging to Lorenzo de’ Medici, which the Greek scholar Janus Lascaris had adapted (transforming the goddess into a conqueror by adding a helmet and legend ἈΛΈΞΑΝΔΡΟΣ) and used on presentation copies of the 1494 Planudean Anthology (Humanists and Bookbinders, pp. 100–103, 125, and Census 12a). About 1580, Odorico commissioned a local artist, Cesare Vecellio (1521–1601), then engaged in painting a series of portraits of Pillone family members, to decorate some 170 books accumulated in the family library at Villa Castelardo di Trichiana, near Belluno. Many (if not all) the books in his library were shelved with their backs to the wall and fore-edges exposed. In the past, some fore-edges had been lettered with the titles of the volumes, and Vecellio was obliged to work his decoration around this lettering; if no lettering was present, he wrote the author’s name (often abbreviated) horizontally across the lower fore-edge, or vertically from the top to the bottom of the fore-edge. Vecellio usually contented himself with a single, boldly colored figure, such as the author, in the act of writing, or composed a scene suggestive of the contents. He apparently worked with specific instructions provided by Odorico, some of which have survived as notes on the inside upper cover. Paris: Michel de Vascosan, 1558 [–1560] Sixteen Parisian armorial bindings displaying a stamp of a rampant lion within a cartouche of foliage are known. This insignia had been recorded in the Manuel de l’amateur de reliures armoriées françaises (Paris, 1929) among “fers non identifiés” (Pl. 1860, 2–3). The arms were recognized as those of Bartolomeo Cenami by Pierre Berès, in 1963 (see list below, no. 14), and as belonging to the Cenami family by a Sotheby’s cataloguer, in 1977 (no. 6), but not until 1991, when Jean Balsamo published two bindings in Bulletin du Bibliophile (nos. 1, 16), did Bartolomeo Cenami emerge into the light as a bibliophile. The sixteen bindings cover books printed between 1558 and 1601, in French (6), Latin (5), Italian (3), and Spanish (2), printed at Rouen (4), Paris (3), Medina del Campo (2), Venice (2), and Augsburg, Basel, Leiden, Lyon, and Vicenza (one in each city). Seven bindings are in the Bibliotheca Brookeriana. Bartolomeo di Girolamo di Ridolfo Cenami (1556–1611) was the scion of a Lucchese merchant and banking family, who arrived in Paris about 1578, and quickly became a royal creditor to Henri III. He forged a similar relationship with Henri IV, as did two of his sons, Vincenzo (1581–January 1651) and Abbé Paolo (1587–October 1651), with Cardinal Mazarin. Bartolomeo kept a house in Paris in the rue du Grand-Chantier and a “Pavillon” at Charenton (Le clos Louvet), which was used occasionally by Henri IV for diplomacy and by the Dauphin Louis XIII for discreet meetings. Bartolomeo died in Paris and was interred in the church Saint-Julien-des-Enfants-Rouges. Another of Bartolomeo’s sons, Ferdinando Gerolamo, had remained in Lucca to look after the family’s interests, dwelling there in the Palazzo del Decanato di San Michele, and the Villa Cenami at Segromigno (bought by Bartolomeo in 1599). After his premature death, his brothers Vincenzo and Paolo resolved to bequeath all family properties at Lucca to his widow, Felice Saminiati. About half of the sixteen volumes contain the later inscription “Dello Studio di Casa Cenami,” in one instance with “Casa” overwriting “Ba…” (no. 3). Since four of the volumes also have ownership inscriptions of Lucchese collectors of the eighteenth century—Bernardino Baroni, historian of Lucca, author of a genealogical memoir of the Cenami family (no. 8); Francesco Maria Conti (nos. 10, 16); Giovanni Francesco Viligiardi (no. 13); and Niccolà di Sirignano, dated Lucca 1738 (no. 3)—it is likely that the library was dispersed in Lucca, not in Paris. The books perhaps were transferred by Bartolomeo himself, during the period when he was Lucchese ambassador to Florence (1594–1599), or posthumously, by his eldest son, Vincenzo, who returned permanently to Lucca about 1636. None of the sixteen books is listed in a post-mortem inventory of Paolo’s library taken in Paris, 31 October 1651. All of the Cenami bindings have a foliate center- and corner-pieces of a type associated with a Parisian binding atelier established by Nicolas Ève (d. ca 1582), royal binder to Henri III, and his son Clovis, royal binder to Henri IV. Paris: Michel de Vascosan, July 1559 Eight volumes from the library of Louis de Sainte-Maure are known to survive. Three are recueils, containing altogether twenty-two separately published editions of Cicero’s orations, from the Parisian presses of Josse Bade, Michel de Vascosan, and Simon de Colines, printed 1532–1547; four are works of ancient or modern history, published at Lyon or Basel, printed 1556–1558. The present volume, published in 1559, the second edition of Jean de Maumont’s French translation of the collected works of the Christian apologist St. Justin Martyr, is the latest in the group. Louis de Sainte-Maure was the second son of Jean III de Sainte-Maure, comte de Nesle, and Anne d’Humières. In January 1545, in anticipation of his marriage to Renée de Rieux (1524–1567; after 1547, known as Guyonne, comtesse de Laval), François I granted him the title of marquis, which is lettered upon all eight bindings. Upon the death of in May 1547 of her uncle, Guy XVII, said to have been stabbed by Henri II during a quarrel, the Laval estate passed to the couple, and Louis de Sainte-Maure (now denominated Guy XVIII) is said to have transferred the rich Laval library to Nesle in Picardie (Maucourt de Bourjolly, Memoire chronologique sur la ville de Laval [Paris, 1888], II, pp. 3–4). Our binding was dated ca 1559 by Paul Culot, but it evidently was executed several years later. The “Prologue du Roy” is subscribed by Jean de Maumont at Paris, 10 June 1559, and the colophon dated July 1559. On 27 May 1559, Louis de Sainte-Maure stood together with Frédéric de Foix, Gaston de Foix, and Antoine du Prat in the palace of Westminster, and surrendered himself into custody, in accordance with the terms of the recently concluded treaty of Cateau-Cambrésis. The hostages were visited in London sometime during 1560 by Pierre Boaistuau; in 1562, all except Du Prat were released. The binding on the Du Choul (1556) may also date from the early or mid-1560s. Descriptions of it (we have seen no illustration) mention a “background of the whole cover decorated with a semis of gold dots” and a “back decorated with fillets, scrolls and dots to a similar design” with “gilt edges tooled ‘au pointillé.’” These same features are seen on the Brooker binding. The three recueils of Cicero and the Plinius were clearly bound some years previously, ca. 1550–1555, in the Parisian atelier designated the “Cupid’s Bow Binder.” The Giovio is also earlier, bound in Lyon ca. 1556–1558 by the “Medallions of Henri II Binder”. The Polybius (1558) has very recently come to our notice and no details of its binding are yet available. After the death of Renée, Louis de Sainte-Maure married Madeleine Olivier. Her remarriage after his own death (9 September 1572) was the occasion for producing an “Inventaire après décès” which might contain information about his library (see https://francearchives.gouv.fr/en/facomponent/fc2eef64d8551199f2d3fb6ccb5f3db3d92f8078). Apart from the supralibros, the earliest recognizable mark of ownership in our book is an eighteenth-century inscription on an endleaf, read as “De Joüy.” A bibliophile of this name, Antoine-Louis Rouillé, comte de Jouy (1689–1761), is known (Nouvel armorial du bibliophile, I, pp. 187–188; Manuel de l’amateur de reliures armoriées françaises, 277); however, a different edition of this text was offered in his sale (Prevost, Catalogue des livres de la bibliothèque de feu M. Binding: Parisian tan calf (342 x 224 mm), ca. 1565, for Louis de Sainte-Maure, border frame painted brown within gilt fillets containing on inner side a decor of a continuous chain of three foothills outlined by a gilt fillet with ovals at angles, in center an elaborate oval cartouche composed of interlacing strapwork elements, painted brown or leaving exposed the tan calf, their edges highlighted in green paint, and with leafy forms at outer corners of cartouche, some points of intersection painted green, interstices stippled in gold, center of cartouche lettered in gold on upper cover “LOIS . DE . STE .| MAVRE . MAR |QVIS. DE | NELLE” and “CONTE DE | IOVGNI ET | DE | LAVAL” on lower cover, flat spine carrying over the decoration from covers, edges gilt and gauffered to an arabesque pattern. Petronio Binder (Hobson, "Bookbinding in Bologna"), three blind fillets around sides, rectangular frame composed of single gilt fillet flanked by three blind fillets, miter to fillets around sides, in center a gilt cupid surrounded by gilt leafy tendrils to form a lozenge-shaped cartouche with trefoil at four sides, above and below PONPONIVS* [sic] and *MELA* in gilt, and an pomegranate tool at inner angles, traces of four pairs of ties, spine with raised bands in four compartments with saltires in blind, plain edges stained blue.
