I hope the troops under Gen Jones, those under you & Col. I rely greatly upon the cooperation of yourself & Col. Imboden." Following Stonewall Jackson's brilliant Valley Campaign of spring 1862, Lee had started to view the Shenandoah Valley as a possible "avenue of invasion" for his planned incursion of the north, which ultimately resulted in his costly defeat at Gettysburg. President of Congress John Hancock announces the adoption of the Declaration of Independence: “the Congress have judged it necessary to dissolve all Connection between Great Britain, and the American Colonies; and to declare them free and independent States. …” The text of the Declaration of Independence—which announced and justified America’s resolution of separation from Great Britain—was first printed on the evening of 4 July 1776, by John Dunlap. But when the Continental Congress convened for session in May of that year, the issuance of such a declaration was far from a foregone conclusion. A coalition of delegates from Mid-Atlantic states, led by Pennsylvania's John Dickinson, advocated a cautious approach towards independence and may even have harbored hopes for an equitable reconciliation with Britain. The first step towards the Declaration was Virginia delegate Richard Henry Lee’s resolution of 7 June, “that these United Colonies are, and of right, ought to be, free and independent States, that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain is, and ought to be, totally dissolved.” This provoked sharp debate in the chamber, with South Carolinian Edward Rutledge confiding to John Jay that “The Sensible part of the House opposed the Motion. ... They saw no Wisdom in a Declaration of Independence nor any other Purpose to be answer’d by it, but placing ourselves in the Power of those with whom we mean to treat. ...” But firebrands like John Adams carried the day and on 11 June 1776 the Continental Congress appointed a committee of five members to draft a declaration endorsing Lee's resolution. Thomas Jefferson of Virginia, John Adams of Massachusetts, Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania, Roger Sherman of Connecticut, and Robert R. Livingston of New York formed the committee. Jefferson was chosen to write the Declaration, in recognition of his (in John Adams's words) “peculiar felicity of expression.” His extensively reworked Rough Draft, as it is commonly known, is preserved in the Jefferson Papers, Library of Congress. In addition to Lee’s resolution, Jefferson drew heavily on two other fundamental sources for his text: George Mason’s bill of rights, adopted by Virginia on 12 June 1776, and his own draft of a proposed constitution for Virginia. Jefferson felt great satisfaction for the rest of his life in having been privileged to serve as chief author of this greatest of American documents. Shortly before his death, Jefferson wrote to Richard Henry Lee, responding to the remarks of John Adams and others that the Declaration only stated what everyone at the time believed. He had been concerned, he wrote, “not to find out new principles, or new arguments, never before thought of, not merely to say things which had never been said before; but to place before mankind the common sense of the subject, in terms so plain and firm as to command their assent ... it was intended to be an expression of the American mind.” As is evident from their annotations on the Rough Draft, Adams and Franklin read and commented on Jefferson's version, making relatively small changes. There is no direct evidence of revision from the hands of Sherman and Livingston. A fair copy (now lost), incorporating these changes, was submitted to the full body of the Continental Congress, which debated it for three days before approving it on 4 July 1776. The most substantial modification made in Congressional discussion was that the final point of Jefferson's charge against the British king, that of “violating [the] most sacred rights of life & liberty” by encouraging the slave trade, was struck out. Jefferson's own notes made at the time of the debates state that this was done “in complaisance to South Carolina and Georgia, who had never attempted to restrain the importation of slaves, and who on the contrary still wished to continue it.” With that major change, Congress adopted the Declaration and authorized its printing, resolving “That the committee appointed to prepare the declaration superintend & correct the press; That copies of the declaration be sent to the several Assemblies, Conventions & Committees or Councils of Safety and to the several Commanding Officers of the Continental troops that it be proclaimed in each of the United States & at the head of the army.” No roll call was recorded, but the vote to adopt and issue the Declaration was unanimous by colony, although apparently there were dissenting votes in both the Pennsylvania and Delaware delegations and New York abstained completely. That same evening, a manuscript copy of the Declaration, evidently bearing the authorizing signature of John Hancock, was taken to the shop of John Dunlap, official printer to Congress, which was located within walking distance of the Statehouse at 48 High Street and Market Street. Dunlap evidently spent the evening of 4 July 1776 setting the Declaration in type. At least one proof was taken, a fragment of which survives at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania at Philadelphia. It chiefly varies from the finished copies in putting many phrases within quotation marks which were afterward removed, in some cases leaving unusually large gaps between words. Finished copies were pulled and delivered to Congress the morning of 5 July; the number of copies printed is unknown, but it is likely that the Dunlap broadside was printed in substantial numbers, perhaps between 500 and 1,000 copies. Among the very first copies of the Declaration to be distributed were those ordered by Congress to be “sent to the several Assemblies, Conventions & Committees or Councils of Safety and to the several Commanding Officers of the Continental troops.” One of those printings of Dunlap’s broadside would have been accompanied by the present extraordinary letter, signed by John Hancock as President of Congress, 6 July 1776, and dispatched to one of the original thirteen states: “Altho it is not possible to foresee the Consequence of Human Actions, yet it is nevertheless a Duty we owe ourselves and Posterity in all our public Counsels, to decide in the best Manner we are able, and to trust the result to that Being, who controuls both Causes and Events, so as to bring about his own Determinations. “Impressed with this Sentiment, and at the same time fully convinced, that our Affairs may take a more favourable Turn, the Congress have judged it necessary to dissolve all Connection between Great Britain, and the American Colonies; and to declare them free and independent States, as you will perceive by the enclosed Declaration, which I am directed by Congress to transmit to you, and to request you will have it proclaimed in the Way you shall think most proper. “The important Consequences to the American States from this Declaration of Independence, considered as the Ground and Foundation of a future Government, will naturally suggest the Propriety of proclaiming it in such a Manner that People may be universally informed of it.” Hancock evidently wrote thirteen near-identical letters between 5 and 8 July, one for each of the colonies (he also wrote similar letters to generals George Washington and Artemas Ward). Nine versions of Hancock’s letter-announcement to the colonies of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence—each supplemented by a copy of John Dunlap’s broadside printing of the Declaration—can be accounted for, as follows. ¶ New Jersey: Hancock sent a letter addressed to the “Honble Convention of New Jersey,” 5 July 1776. (This letter appeared in the Rosenbach Company’s Catalogue 14 [1949], item 34. and was exhibited at that time at the University of California, Los Angeles. It had earlier been in the collections of Abraham Tomlinson and the Mercantile Library Association of the City of New-York and bears ink stamps from these two owners. The letter was evidently sold by Rosenbach, or by his successor, John Fleming, to Raymond E. Hartz. It was subsequently acquired, about 1991, by the Gilder Lehrman Collection, and is now housed at the New-York Historical Society.) ¶ Delaware: Hancock sent a letter addressed to the “Col. [John] Haslet, or Officer commanding the Battalion of Continental Troops in Delaware Government,” 5 July 1776. (The current location of this letter, if it survives, has not been traced.) ¶ Pennsylvania: Hancock sent a letter addressed to the “Honourable Committee of Safety of Pennsylvania,” 5 July 1776. (This letter is now in the collection of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania.) ¶ Massachusetts: Hancock sent a letter addressed to the “Honble Assembly of Masstts. Bay,” 6 July 1776. (This letter is known to have been sent by the retained letterbook of the Continental Congress, but its current location, if it survives, has not been traced.) ¶ New York: Hancock sent a letter addressed to the “Honble Convention of New York,” 6 July 1776. (This letter is known to have been sent by the retained letterbook of the Continental Congress, but its current location, if it survives, has not been traced.) ¶ Connecticut: Hancock sent a letter addressed to Governor Jonathan Trumbull, 6 July 1776. (This letter is known to have been sent by the retained letterbook of the Continental Congress, but its current location, if it survives, has not been traced.) ¶ Rhode Island: Hancock sent a letter addressed to “Honble Govnr [Nicholas] Cooke,” 6 July 1776. (This letter is now in the collection of the Lilly Library, Indiana University.) ¶ New Hampshire: Hancock sent a letter addressed to “Honble Convention Assembly of New Hampshire,” 6 July 1776. (This letter was purchased by the Rosenbach Company from the rare book firm Dodd & Livingston prior to 1912. It was featured in several Rosenbach catalogues from Catalogue 6 [1911], item 258, to Catalogue 64 [1937], item 28. The letter was evidently sold by Rosenbach, or by his successor, John Fleming, to Philip D. Sang, who placed it on deposit at Rutgers University. The letter was subsequently obtained by another collector who consigned it to auction at Sotheby’s New York, 23 May 1984, lot 157. The letter is currently privately owned. ¶ Maryland: Hancock sent a letter addressed to the “Honble Convention of Mary Land,” 8 July 1776. (Although Letters of Delegates to Congress 1774–1789, ed. Smith, 4:396, locates this letter in the Purviance Papers at the Maryland Historical Society, the Historical Society in fact has only a contemporary clerical copy of the letter. The current location of the original signed letter, if it survives, has not been traced.) The direction, or address line of the present letter is abraded, but by process ofelimination it can be determined that it must originally have been intended for Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, or Virginia. However, just because the letter might have originally been sent to Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, or Virginia does not mean that state would have retained it. Record keeping was chaotic and archives an afterthought in many of the colonies during the foment of revolution. It is likely that once Hancock’s instruction that the Declaration be “proclaimed” was fulfilled, both his letter and the Declaration broadside that accompanied it were taken home as souvenirs by members of the crowd gathered for the reading. It is worth noting that less than half (5 of 13) of the Hancock Declaration cover letters have survived—none of which is in its respective state archive, and only one of which is even currently located in the state to which it was originally sent. As for the postcolonial provenance of the present Hancock letter, the earliest reference to it that Sotheby’s can find is its inclusion in the auction catalogue of the Collection of Autographs of Col. Thomas Donaldson, lot 198, sold in Philadelphia by Stan Henkels, 26 October 1899. The letter is illustrated, and there is no doubt that it is the same manuscript. A copy of the Donaldson catalogue with buyers’ names noted in the collection of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania identifies the purchaser of lot 198 as “Howard.” The most likely buyer would be Arthur P. Howard, who had a sale at American Art Association, March 6, 1925, titled “Books and Autographs (Revolutionary War)”—but the Hancock letter was not in the catalogue (of course it could have been sold either before or after the single-owner auction). At some point in the 1920s or 1930s, the letter was part of the private collection of Harry F. Marks, a prominent New York books and manuscripts dealer, ca. 1910–1950. (Marks may well have obtained the letter from Arthur Howard.) Among other evidences of Marks’s ownership is the December 1937 issue of a hobby magazine titled Avocations, which, in a brief profile of Marks, states that his private collection included “a signed copy of the letter which accompanied the original transcripts of the Declaration of Independence.” Hancock’s letter eloquently conveys the gravity of the steps Congress had taken by severing ties with Great Britain, and “The important Consequences to the American States from this Declaration of Independence” that he foresaw redound to the present day. As a primary witness to the American Revolution; as an epitome of the Declaration of Independence; and as a statement of principle by one of the fifty-six Signers who pledged to each other their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor, this John Hancock letter and its few surviving companions stand sole and incomparable.

The Proceedings also publishes the momentous resolution of 15 May 1776 "that the delegates appointed to represent this colony in the General Congress be instructed to propose to that respectable body to declare the the United Colonies free and independent States. …" This resolution, introduced by Richard Henry Lee to the Continental Congress on 7 June 1776 —just two days after the adjournment of the Virginia Convention—led directly to the appointment of a committee to draft the Declaration of Independence. Covering the crucial period from 6 May to 5 July 1776, the Proceedings describe an integrated series of events and decisions, including the adoption of Virginia's Constitution—in which the state separately declared independence—and the election of Patrick Henry as the state's first governor. "When the convention adopted the new constitution on June 29, 1776, it transformed Virginia's political landscape by giving the people an unprecedented role in running their government" (CCC, p. 40). But the Virginia Declaration of Rights is the cornerstone of the Virginia Convention. "Written primarily by George Mason and adopted on June 12, 1776, the Virginia Declaration of Rights comprised, in the words of historian Gordon S. Wood [in The Creation of the American Republic], 'a jarring but exciting combination of ringing declarations of universal principles with a motley collection' of more specific legal customs that Americans had long prized. It began by stating that 'all men are by nature equally free and independent' and that 'all power is vested in, and consequently derived from, the people.' Because of this, 'a majority of the community hath an indubitable, inalienable, and indefeasible right to reform, alter, or abolish' their government whenever they deemed the current one 'inadequate.' The similarity between these phrases and those found in the Declaration of Independence was no coincidence. Jefferson eagerly drew on Mason's drafts as he composed his own text in Philadelphia. … Importantly, the Declaration of Rights did not grant the people their rights but rather guaranteed them. Since all power came from the people, their rights were not limited to what they chose to emphasize and write down at this particular moment" (CCC, pp. 37, 40). The sixteen points of the Declaration of Rights also allowed for the separation of the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of government; frequent free elections; elimination of hereditary offices; the right to trial by a jury of one's peers; reasonable bail; no cruel or unusual punishment; reasonable warrants for searches; freedom of the press; subordination of the military to civil authority; and freedom of religion. This final clause was introduced by James Madison: "That religion, or the duty to which we owe to our Creator, and the manner of discharging it, can be directed only by reason and conviction, not by force or violence; and therefore, all men are equally entitled to the free exercise of religion, according to the dictates of conscience; and that it is the mutual duty of all to practice Christian forbearance, love, and charity, towards each other." According to Lance Banning, Madison's contribution to the Declaration of Rights established "a standard that no society had ever recognized in its organic law" (ANB). The Ordinances Passed at a General Convention of Delegates and Representatives also includes the texts of the Virginia Declaration of Rights and Virginia Constitution. Both publications are very scarce on the market, with about a dozen copies of each being held in institutional collections. Only William & Mary, the Huntington, John Carter Brown, the Library Company of Philadelphia, the New York Public Library, and the Library of Virginia have copies of both imprints. We find only one other copy of the works together and one copy of the Ordinances separately in the auction records for the past five decades. This set of the two works is signed on the title-page of the Proceedings by Cyrus Griffin, a Virginia attorney who was in private practice in 1776. In 1778, Griffin was chosen, with James Madison, as one of Virginia's delegates to the Continental Congress, serving until 1781. He returned to Congress in 1787–1788, serving as the last President of the Congress under the Confederation from January to November 1788, when the Confederation Congress adjourned in favor of the new federal government. Griffin subsequently held various government posts, finally serving as a judge in the U.S. District Court for Virginia from 1790 until his death in 1810. Engraved title-pages on India paper mounted, each with a different vignette, extra-illustrated with 29 autograph letters and documents and approximately 320 engraved portraits, maps, views, and other illustrations, including handcolored frontispieces; some occasional marginal spotting, a few leaves lightly browned. Full red levant morocco gilt by Rivière, covers with gilt borders and cornerpieces of patriotic shields, front cover with central gilt crest of Washington, rear cover with central gilt Great Seal of the United States (all enhanced with onlays of white and blue morocco), spines gilt in six compartments, lettered in the second and third, the others incorporating a stylized GW cipher in a foliate design, blue morocco doublures with elaborate dentelles and five medallion miniature portraits inlaid inside front covers (Washington after Trumbull, Irving, Washington after Peale, Martha Washington, Washington after Stuart; each 100 by 75 mm), purple moiré linings, top edges gilt. A magnificent set of the first edition, large-paper limited issue of Irving's influential biography of George Washington, extensively extra-illustrated and splendidly bound. This is no. 51 of 110 large-paper sets, advertised as "the Magnificent Quarto Edition … superfine paper, plates on India paper." Irving's "final project, long contemplated, was a five-volume Life of George Washington, elaborately researched and agonizingly completed as his health failed. … The book was designed … for both scholars and average American readers. It tended to reaffirm standard conceptions of the nation's most revered patriot, who, for Irving, was a nearly perfect hero. A country gentleman, a soldier, and republican, motivated by civic virtue as well as a sense of noblesse oblige, he had served his country disinterestedly, carefully mediating, for instance, while president, between Jeffersonian and Hamiltonian extremes, Irving went to great lengths to make him a less remote, less glacial figure" (William L. Hedges in American National Biography). Putnam issued the large-paper sets with 102 additional publisher's illustrations, on India paper mounted, not found in the standard octavo edition. A subsequent owner added more than two hundred further engravings and other illustrations, as well as twenty-nine original manuscripts. Continental Congress An Address of the Congress to the Inhabitants of the United States of America. Hartford: Watson & Goodwin, [1778] Broadside (423 x 267 mm). Four lines of heading, text in three columns, docketed on verso "Address to the People from Congress May 9th 1778"; lightly browned, a few light stains (somewhat more severe on verso), minor tears and fold separations, intersecting central fold separation touching a few letters. Half green morocco slipcase gilt, chemise. A very rare Revolutionary War broadside rallying the American citizenry to "have Courage to persevere [so that] we shall establish our Liberties and Independence." Drafted by a committee of Samuel Chase, Richard Henry Lee, and Gouverneur Morris, this address was recommended by a congressional resolve appended to its text, to be read by ministers of all denominations immediately after worship services. The address "sought to reinvigorate popular support for continuing the war and thereby blunt the impact of Britain's recently received proposals for Anglo-American reconciliation" (Letter of Delegates to Congress 9:xxvi). The text charges the British Crown with dragging the unwilling American colonies into a war and conducting it with cruelty, ''Rapine and Devastation." Lord George Germaine had recently spoken in Parliament, urging that the English recognize the independence of the United States and form an alliance with them against France. This suggestion is sharply dismissed by the present Congressional Address: "The haughty Prince, who spurned us from his Feet with Contumely and Disdain—and the Parliament which proscribed us, now descend to offer Terms of Accomodation. Whilst in the full Career of Victory, they pulled off the Mask, and avowed their intended Despotism. But, having lavished in vain the Blood and Treasure of their Subjects in Pursuit of this execrable Purpose, they now endeavour to ensnare us, with the insidious Offers of Peace. They would seduce you into a Dependence, which necessarily, inevitably leads to the most humiliating slavery." The conclusion of the Address reminds all its readers and auditors that the securing of their liberty will require their "utmost strenuous Exertions." Of course, the Americans would form an alliance with France, rather than against her, and with assistance from the French military, the colonists won their final independence with a victory over General Cornwallis at Yorktown, Virginia, in September of 1781. Despite its present scarcity this Address must have been one of the most widely disseminated documents of the Revolution, being published in nine separate broadside editions in the two months after its issuance on 9 May 1778. Broadsides were printed in York, Lancaster, Williamsburg, Baltimore, Providence, Exeter, and Boston (two distinct printings), as well as Hartford. The present Hartford broadside is known in only one other copy, at the Connecticut Historical Society, and it evidently last appeared at auction in the David A. The oldest ballpark in the major leagues, every sellout game plays host to Red Sox fans as well as fans of Ghosts of Baseball Past and Present who adore the beauty of its asymmetrical lines, its quirky nooks and crannies, its intimate Sunday picnic atmosphere and its never ending stream of drama. Fenway has hosted some of the most theatrical and exciting, as well as excruciating, and now ultimately glorious moments in baseball history, not to mention a stage to sport's greatest rivalry. Sit in the bleachers, listen carefully and you just might hear the echoes of some of baseball’s greatest players and seasons: Cy Young, Babe Ruth, Jimmy Collins, Duffy Lewis, Tris Speaker, Harry Hooper, Joe Cronin, Bobby Doerr, Johnny Pesky, Ted Williams (last player to hit .400, in 1941), Jimmie Foxx, Carlton Fisk, Jim Rice and Carl Yastrzemski (last player to win the Triple Crown, 1967), Nomar Garciaparra, Manny Ramirez, Pedro Martinez and Curt Schilling, just to name a few. Fenway Park is actually the second home for the Sox. In 1901, the Boston Pilgrims became one of the charter members of the fledgling American League. The Pilgrims played ball at the Huntington Avenue Grounds, now a part of Northeastern University's campus. Boston Globe owner General Charles Henry Taylor, a Civil War veteran, bought the team for his son John I. Taylor in 1904. In 1907, owner Taylor changed the club's name from the Pilgrims to the Red Sox. In 1910, tired of the leasing arrangement for the Huntington Avenue Grounds, Taylor made a big announcement: he would build a new ballpark for his Red Sox. Taylor dubbed the new ballpark Fenway Park because of its location in the Fenway section of Boston, home to marshes, or "fens".  As the first two games at Fenway Park were rained out,  the new 35,000 seat ballpark opened its major league career on April 20, 1912 just five days after the sinking of the Titanic. On Grand Opening Day, future grandfather of President John F. Kennedy, Boston Mayor John "Honey Fitz" Fitzgerald, one of the many thousands in attendance,  threw out the first ball in the park that was built at a cost of $350,000 and that would come to be known as "Boston's Sistine Chapel." This offered ball, as noted by Tom Connolly, in his writing, was the "First Ball Pitched - Grand Opening Day, Fenway Park, April 20, 1912".  As an umpire to the grand openings of Fenway, Shibe, Comiskey and Yankee Stadium, as well as numerous Opening Day Games, Connolly enjoyed marking the landmarks with balls as souvenirs, such as the Woodrow Wilson, Calvin Coolidge and General John Pershing, as well as the first Sunday game ever played in Washington, DC. Connolly has also written  "Batteries - O’Brien – Pat Caldwell, Numaker and Sterret”, “Umpires TH Connolly & Bob Hart” , and “Attendance, 25,000”” on various panels. On another panel Connolly penned the final score, "Boston 7, New York 6, 11= Innings” . Years before the most famous rivalry in sport began, the Red Sox opened the season playing the second division New York Highlanders, often known as the Yanks. Sox pitcher Buck O'Brien was knocked out of the box, but saved by a Tris Speaker RBI in the bottom of the 11th inning. The Boston Herald noted in its report of the game that the overflow crowd featured "1000 fans that were standing in center field. The ground rules robbed Speaker, Stahl, Hall and Yerkes of home runs."   Opening Day turned out to be a portent of the season's fortunes for both Boston and New York. The Red Sox took the American League pennant in 1912 with a 105-47 record, good for a winning percentage of .691, and went on to beat the New York Giants in the World Series, the Sox’s second title. The Highlanders, suffering their 6th straight loss, went 50-102 (.329), finishing in last place, a whopping 55 games behind the Red Sox. Fenway continued to enjoy the good fortune of three titles in the teens. However, when Harry Frazee sold Babe Ruth in 1919, both the Red Sox and Fenway deteriorated rapidly. Frazee sold the team to Bob Quinn in 1924 and the team spent the Roaring 20's drowning in the cellar while the Yanks, fortified with 11 former Red Sox players, were drinking champagne, winning their first three championships. When Tom Yawkey bought the Red Sox and Fenway in 1934 and the left field bleachers and 25-foot wall were partially destroyed by fire, he spent more than $1 million to restore it, adding the now most famous wall in sport, the “Green Monster”, which got its nickname in 1947 when it received its first coat of green paint. Ubiquitous at 37 feet tall, with a manually operated scoreboard that displays the line score and scores of other American League games, it regularly turns line drive homers into hard singles and lazy pop flies into roundtrippers, testing the handball skills of every leftfielder it meets. Today the park resounds with the unbridled joy of some of the greatest moments in the history of Fenway, the fourth and fifth games of the 2004 ALCS. Who can forget when Dave Roberts, with two outs in the ninth inning and facing a sweep by the Yankees, stole second base and scored on Bill Mueller's single? Or, when hero David Ortiz slammed his walk-off homerun in the eleventh inning of Game 4, followed the next night his bloop single in the fourteenth inning of Game 5? And, on Opening Day this year, the green of Fenway and red of fans' jerseys created one giant Christmas colored scene for all of those parishioners in Red Sox Nation, a joyous unwrapping of the 2004 World Series Championship banner and the presentation of the rings.   In the end, Bill "Spaceman" Lee, no stranger to the park's sense of magic and mayhem, has said it best. "Fenway Park is a shrine.  People go there to worship."

Brown, William Henry Portrait Gallery of Distinguished American Citizens, with biographical sketches. Hartford: E. B. and E. C. Kellogg, 1846 Folio (403 x 305 mm). 27 tinted lithographed silhouette portraits, 27 tinted lithographed plates of facsimiles of handwriting; foxing, some offsetting of plates, marginal repair to p. 17, mild damp staining to a few leaves, mainly marginal. Publisher's half brown morocco, cloth boards with gilt device; restoration to outer corner of upper cover, gilt device scratched, general light wear. First edition. An impressive work, of which "Almost the entire edition was destroyed by fire, and copies are extremely rare" (Harry Peters). All the portraits, except for the George Washington allegorical frontispiece, are based on sketches made from life by Brown, who was widely celebrated for his scissor-cut silhouettes. Brown was born and died in Charleston, South Carolina, but in the interim traveled widely throughout the United States, his fame as a silhouettist gaining him access to many of the country's leading citizens whose profiles Brown took with amazing speed and accuracy. Alice Van Leer Carrick, an authority on silhouettes, notes that rather than any existing original portraits, the present work is "the real memorial to Brown's genius, now almost rarer than any of the silhouettes themselves." Brown prepared the biographical text himself, and the silhouettes were transferred to stone and printed by one of the best-known lithographic firms of the period, Kelloggs of Hartford, CT. The result is a striking historical and visual record, with subjects including John Marshall, John Q. Adams, Richard C. Moore, Andrew Jackson, John Forsyth, William Henry Harrison, John C. Calhoun, De Witt Clinton, Richard M. Johnson, Joel Poinsett, Alexander Macomb, Martin Van Buren, Samuel Southard, Henry Clay, Henry Wise, Thomas Hart Benton, John Tyler, Levi Woodbury, Thomas Cooper, Daniel Webster, William White, Silas Wright, Nathaniel Tallmadge, Felix Grundy, Dixon Lewis, and John Randolph. JUSTINIAN I. Digestorum, seu pandectarum pars tertia: quae de rebus creditis est (Pars quarta: de pignoribus et hypothecis). Lyon: Guillaume Rouillé, 1581 Two parts of Justinian’s Digest from a set of seven printed by Rouillé in 1581, in a fine binding made for Pietro Duodo, while he was in Paris as Venetian envoy, as part of his travelling library. As with many other collectors, his books were colour coded, though it is usually stated that law books were bound in red, and olive green (as here) for general books. His bindings are sometimes attributed to Clovis Ève, and more recently to the Atelier of the Second Palmette or of the S fermé. The small format of these bindings for Duodo show that they were made as a travelling library, and more than 160 volumes are recorded, which were housed in a custom-made chest. Duodo was in Paris in 1594-1597, at the court of Henri IV, and presumably commissioned the bindings then. The books seem to have returned to Paris, where they appeared on the market in the late eighteenth century, and only attributed to Duodo more than a century later. It has recently been suggested that Duodo’s library influenced the English princes Henry and Charles, who both owned similar travelling libraries, and who met Duodo soon after he arrived in London in 1603 (Francesca Galligan, “Small format books and portable sets: the context of the travelling library of Charles I”, in Seventeenth-century libraries: problems and perspectives, Leiden: Brill, 2023).

Doubleday, Abner Autograph manuscript with cover title “Gen. Abner Doubleday’s Account of the Battle of Gettysburg. Original Autograph Manuscript with Twelve (sic) Original Maps.” [New York, ca. 1875–1885] 20 pages (209 x 170 mm) written on the rectos only of twenty nearly consecutive leaves of blue-line wove paper (one intervening blank leaf, another leaf without manuscript text, bearing only a large tipped-on map), 9 of the text leaves with tipped-on or pasted-down maps or plans, 4 of these with over-slip maps illustrating changes in troop positions, for a total of 14 maps (maps range in size from 28 x 128 mm to 208 x 235 mm), the maps and plans are largely drawn or finished by hand on slips cut from a mauve lithographed topographical map of the battlefield, text with a number of seemingly immediate deletions and emendations, as well as a more formal, later revision in red ink affecting four pages, including the addition of an extensive paragraph (ca. 85 words) to the penultimate text page. Bound, with additional blank leaves, in early twentieth-century green buckram, front cover lettered in gilt as above. Half blue morocco slipcase, chemise. A moment-by-moment account of the first day of Gettysburg, the most famous—and arguably the most consequential—battle in American history, in the hand of one of the commanders of the victorious Union forces. Abner Doubleday (1819–1893) was a career officer in the United States Army, graduating from West Point in 1842. Commissioned as a lieutenant in the First Artillery Regiment, he served at Monterrey and Buena Vista during the Mexican-American War. Over the next decade he held various posts and saw action in the Southwest and Florida in various iterations of the American Indian Wars. Fortune, good or otherwise, found Doubleday, by then a captain, second in command at Fort Sumter to Major Robert Anderson when the South Carolina Militia artillery fired the first shots of the Civil War. Doubleday was the first to return cannonade, later writing in Reminiscences of Forts Sumter and Moultrie in 1860–’61 (New York: Harper & Brothers, 1876), “In aiming the first gun fired against the rebellion I had no feeling of self-reproach, for I fully believed that the contest was inevitable, and was not of our seeking. The United States was called upon not only to defend its sovereignty, but its right to exist as a nation. The only alternative was to submit to a powerful oligarchy who were determined to make freedom forever subordinate to slavery. To me it was simply a contest, politically speaking, as to whether virtue or vice should rule” (pp. 143–144). After Sumter was abandoned by the Union garrison, Doubleday continued to rise in rank as he served in the initial defenses of Washington, D.C., before leading troops in the Shenandoah Valley, and at Second Manassas, the Rappahannock River, Groveton (Virginia), South Mountain, Antietam, and Fredericksburg, after which he was promoted to major general of volunteers. Doubleday’s finest achievement in the Civil War came on 1 July 1863, when command of the First Corps fell to him after corps commander Major General John F. Reynolds was killed in the dawn of the battle. Leading 9,500 Union troops against ten Confederate brigades with almost twice that strength, the First Corps was obliged to retreat through Gettysburg and take up a defensive position on Cemetery Hill. Still, Doubleday’s men inflicted ferocious casualty rates on the rebels. “Gettysburg proved to be Doubleday's last major battle, however. He left the Army of the Potomac afterward, believing that Meade was planning to reorganize the army along political lines. … Humiliated by Meade's decision to replace him as corps commander, Doubleday resented Meade’s treatment of him [Meade gave permanent command of the First Corps to a more junior officer, Major General John Newton.] Before long he began to circulate rumors that Meade had planned to retreat after the second day of the battle. He repeated these charges in an appearance before the Joint Committee on the Conduct of the War in March 1864” (Simpson and Van Atta, in American National Biography). Although Meade was thought to dislike Doubleday, he likely passed him over for permanent command because of an inaccurate report by Major General Oliver O. Howard, commander of the Eleventh Corps that Doubleday’s First Corps broke first, causing the entire Union line to collapse. In retirement, Doubleday became a notable historian of the Civil War, publishing, in addition to numerous articles, three major monographs: Reminiscences of Forts Sumter and Moultrie in 1860–’61 (cited above), Chancellorsville and Gettysburg (New York: Charles Scribner’s Sons, 1882), and Gettysburg Made Plain: A Succinct Account of the Campaign and Battles with the Aid of One Diagram and Twenty-nine Maps (New York: The Century Co., 1888). His publications were intended in part to justify his own actions and undermine Meade’s decisions, and sometimes mired him in controversy. The present manuscript, however—running to some 1,800 words—is for the most part a straightforward and objective account, perhaps an early working draft later revised for publication. The account begins with a map showing the positions of the two armies at 6:00 a.m. after “The Confederate general A. B. Hill advances with two divisions of his Corps to take Gettysburg, which is only held by Buford’s division of Cavalry.” Doubleday further explains, “Pender’s division with 48 guns is back of Heth but is not represented in this map, as it would take up too much space.” The second entry is datelined 10:10 a.m. and describes the pivotal moment of day, again accompanied by a map, this one with an overlay: “Meredith’s brigade (commonly called the Iron Brigade) is ordered into the woods by the Corps Commander Genl. Doubleday who has ridden up from the rear of the column at Marsh Creek. “At this juncture Genl. Reynolds goes into the woods in advance of the troops and is killed. Genl. Doubleday has taken charge of the battle. “The Confederate general Heth sends two brigades under Archer and Davis to attack the Union forces. “A curious state of things now occurs for the left of each force folds around the right of the other. “The Union left is quite successful. It captures Archer and a great part of his brigade, but the two Union regiments on the right are flanked and ordered to fall back to the town by Genl. Wadsworth. The third regiment (the 147 N. Y.) is surrounded by the enemy and loses heavily. Hall’s battery being attacked by skirmishers also retires as its supports are gone. “Genl. Doubleday sends his reserve, the 6th Wisconsin regiment, to rescue the 147 N. Y. The 6th Wisconsin under Lieutenant Colonel Dawes goes forward to the attack. It is joined by two regiments of Cutler’s brigade under Col. Fowler; the 14 Brooklyn and the 95th New York, who were about to attack the same enemy.” The manuscript moves forward just twenty minutes, to 10:30 a.m., with the text explicating another map with an overlay. “The plate represents the 2d Wisconsin who led the attack against Archer taking charge of the prisoners in the woods. The three remaining regiments have crossed the stream and formed line of battle on the other side. “Fowler and Dawes advanced to attack Davis’ Confederate brigade the greater part of which rushes into a railroad cut for shelter. Here being assaulted in front and flank, most of them are captured. “Genl. Doubleday finding his immediate front clear of the enemy reforms his lines east of Willoughby’s Run. “A glance at the Map would naturally lead one to inquire why Hill did not at once advance his reserves and sweep away the small force opposed to him. The fact is[,] owing to the absence of Stuart’s cavalry[,] that the movements of the Union army were not known to Genl. Lee or his subordinates. Hill therefore did not know whether he would find 5000 men or 50,000 in his front.” The cartographically illustrated narrative advances to 2:45 p.m., by which time, O. O. Howard’s Eleventh Corps has joined the First Corps in the field. At this point, Doubleday’s disaffection with the aftermath of the battle begins to show slightly, though his tone remains largely sober and impartial. “Ewell's two divisions under Rodes and Early now make a furious attack against both the First and the Eleventh Corps. “As Hill did not move promptly to second Ewell the First Corps repulsed the attack at all points, resisting repeated assaults, driving back O'Neal's brigade on the North and capturing all but one regiment of Iverson's brigade on the West. Daniel's attack on Stone’s brigade soon after was also driven back. “The enemy were more successful in their advance against the Eleventh Corps which indeed was too far out. Barlow being badly wounded and his division left in an angle between Dole’s Confederate brigade on the North and that of Gordon on the northeast the right flank of the Eleventh Corps was turned and forced back.” After further details of the battle, Doubleday admits that his own men could no longer carry the fight forward. “The First Corps from its heavy losses was no longer in a condition to repel the advance of four large brigades under Pender which up to this time had not been engaged but which now came forward.” The retreat of the First and Eleventh Corps are detailed next, but without finger-pointing or blame being assigned by Doubleday: “The Eleventh Corps are overwhelmed by superior numbers and are almost entirely driven from the field back to the rallying point on cemetery Ridge. … General Doubleday orders the First Corps to retreat undercover of a severe artillery fire from Seminary Ridge.” The manuscript concludes with the ending of the first day of battle, “Genl. Hancock now turns over the command of the troops to Genl. Slocum and rides back to report the state of affairs to Genl. Meade. The latter leaves Taneytown and reaches the field of battle soon after midnight.” The striking maps and plans are precise and detailed, depicting the shifting battlefield almost minute by minute. The positions of infantry, cavalry and artillery of both the Union and Confederate armies are indicated by Doubleday in red, yellow, green, blue and black inks, with the movements of troops, and the names of commanders are clearly designated. A number of similar maps appear in Gettysburg Made Plain, and versions of five of the maps from the present manuscript are reproduced in Battles and Leaders of the Civil War. [RELIURE BRODÉE] Horae beatissimae virginis Maria, ad usum romanum repurgatissimae. Anvers, Christophe Plantin, 1570. In-8 (207 x 127 mm). Velours noir brodé de fils d’or sur plats de carton, broderie d’applique (écu et couronne) et broderie directe, armes du duc d’Anjou entourées du collier de l’ordre de Saint-Michel au centre des plats sur un fond à compartiments losangés chargés de fleurs de lys, double 𝛟 (pour François) aux angles, bordure d’encadrement composée de rinceaux, dos en long orné de fleurs de lys, de trèfles et quatre-feuilles, fermoirs en argent ornés de fleurs de lys et du double 𝛟 couronné, tranchefile bicolore, tranches dorées et ciselées, contregardes et gardes de papier (Reliure de l’époque). Aumônière de l’époque de velours cramoisi. Mouillure affectant les marges inférieures des 15 premiers feuillets et celles du cahier V, petites rousseurs au dernier feuillet. Velours usé et lacunes. Manque un fermoir. Aumônière usée. Rarissime reliure de la Renaissance brodée aux armes et au chiffre du duc d’Anjou. Élégante et luxueuse édition, l’un des chefs-d’œuvre de Plantin, exécutée pour Philippe II, roi d’Espagne, entre le 13 mai et le 8 juillet 1570. Exemplaire réglé. Illustration : 17 remarquables gravures sur cuivre à pleine page par Jean et Jérôme Wierix et Peter Huys d'après Pierre van Der Borsch. Toutes, sauf l’Annonciation, sont signées "P.B." (Pierre van Der Borsch) et des initiales de J. Wierix ("I.H.W.") ou P. Huys ("P.H."). Vignette armoriée gravée sur le titre. Le texte, imprimé en rouge et noir, ainsi que les gravures, sont encadrés de ravissantes bordures mêlant fleurs, fruits et animaux. Collation : 5 ff. blancs, a-g8 A-Y8, 30 ff. blancs. Le célèbre imprimeur et libraire, originaire de Touraine, quitte la France vers 1548 pour s’établir à Anvers. Inquiété de nombreuses fois en raison de ses sympathies pour la religion réformée, et persona non grata aux yeux des Espagnols, Plantin va tenter de recouvrer les faveurs du très catholique roi d’Espagne. Il projette alors une édition savante des textes bibliques, la plus grande bible polyglotte du XVIe siècle. Son entreprise réussit et Philippe II lui accorde son soutien. L’année où est imprimé ce livre, Plantin est nommé archi-typographe de Philippe II. Il imprime dès lors de nombreux livres religieux (missels, livres d’heures, bréviaires) dont le commerce fleurit dans toute l’Europe. Imprimeur de renom, Plantin est aussi un homme d’affaires habile, prudent et opportuniste dans un contexte politico-religieux houleux. En 1582, il imprime le livre relatant les festivités données à Anvers lors de l’entrée du duc d’Anjou (La Ioyeuse & magnifique entrée de Monseigneur Françoys de France… en sa tres-renommée ville d'Anuers) ainsi que les lettres de ce prince, adressées au Parlement de Paris, relatives à la défense des Pays-Bas. Exceptionnel spécimen de reliure brodée de la Renaissance aux armes de François de France, duc d’Anjou. François de France (1555-1584), duc d’Alençon puis duc d’Anjou, est le dernier fils de Henri II et de Catherine de Médicis. Longtemps dans l’ombre de ses frères, et notamment d'Henri III, le "prince rebelle" participa activement aux guerres de Religion. Après le massacre de la Saint-Barthélemy, il prend la tête du parti des "Malcontents" composé de catholiques et de protestants modérés, dont le roi de Navarre, futur Henri IV, désireux de combattre l’absolutisme du pouvoir royal. Cette conjuration fomentée contre Henri III, dont Alençon contestait la légitimité depuis son accession au trône de Pologne, se conclut, le 6 mai 1576, par l’édit de Beaulieu, accordant une liberté de culte aux protestants. Le duc d’Alençon reçoit alors en apanage le duché d’Anjou. Le rôle politique joué par l’ambitieux duc d’Anjou s’étend au-delà des frontières du royaume. Tandis que sévissent en France les guerres de Religion, le jeune frère d’Henri III tente de conquérir la couronne des Pays-Bas insurgés contre Philippe II d’Espagne. Choisi par Guillaume d’Orange comme protecteur de leur liberté, il est fait duc de Brabant. Mais la déroute de son armée lors de sa tentative fracassante de prise d’Anvers, en janvier 1583, voit ses espoirs de couronne à jamais dissipés. Les armes du duc d’Anjou brodées sur les plats permettent de dater l’exécution de la reliure après 1576. D’autre part, ses armes peintes et finement enluminées sur le titre, recouvrant ostensiblement celles de Philippe II, témoignent de ses prétentions sur les Pays-Bas alors en rébellion contre la couronne espagnole. Si les reliures brodées sont fréquentes au XVIe siècle, leur production va cependant décliner "dès 1532 avec l’arrivée de maroquins importés d’outre Méditerranée […] Dès lors, les reliures de cuir seront d’usage très général, sinon presque exclusif, et les reliures en tissus deviendront exceptionnelles. Cependant les reliures brodées continuent à être l’objet d’une production particulière et limitée […] Elles constituent toujours la couvrure de grand luxe des exemplaires d’auteurs, le plus souvent manuscrits, offerts à de très hauts dignitaires" (Sabine Coron & Martine Lefèvre, Livres en broderie. Reliures françaises du Moyen Âge à nos jours, p. 25). Il est difficile de savoir où a été exécutée cette reliure et d’en attribuer la réalisation à un quelconque atelier, à la différence des reliures en cuir pour lesquelles l’étude des fers permet une identification. "L’assimilation trop fréquente de la broderie ‘aux seuls ouvrages de dame’ […] a empêché d’y reconnaître l’intervention de brodeurs professionnels. Mais la principale cause est probablement d’ordre historique. À partir du XVIe siècle, la reliure de luxe n’est plus essentiellement une reliure d’étoffe, mais une reliure de peau, de préférence en maroquin" (Sabine Coron & Martine Lefèvre, op. cit., p. 23). Cette précieuse reliure d’étoffe, accompagnée de l’aumônière destinée à la préserver comme c’était souvent l’usage pour les livres de piété, a pu être exécutée à Paris ou à Anvers puisque le livre est sorti des presses plantiniennes. Il pourrait s’agir d’une reliure de présentation pour le duc d’Anjou alors qu’il s’apprêtait à ceindre la couronne des Pays-Bas. Quoiqu’il en soit, elle témoigne du luxe et du raffinement de ce type de couvrure à la Renaissance, très en vogue chez les Valois depuis le milieu du XIVe siècle, et dont peu d’exemples sont parvenus jusqu’à nous. Une provenance angevine Ce livre d’heures servit de livre de raison à la famille Boissard depuis le milieu du XVIIe siècle jusqu’à la fin du XVIIIe. La première mention est la naissance, le 2 juillet 1661 de Louis de Boissard suivie de celle de Louise Rose de Boissard, le 18 septembre 1662. Tous deux enfants d’Isaac de Boissard, page de la grande écurie du roi, et de Claude du Hardas. Suivent les naissances de leurs frère et sœurs : Françoise Charlotte, René César et Adrienne ainsi que celles des enfants de Jacques Isaac de Boissard et de Charlotte d’Orvault. Les deux dernières mentions sont la naissance et le baptême, le 4 septembre 1768, Charles Isaac de Boissard, fils de Charles Isaac René de Boissard et de Anne Gabrielle de Caradeuc de La Chalotais ; et le mariage, le 26 juin 1783, de Marie Renée Félicité de Boissard avec Nicolas Joseph Victoire de Herté de Merville. Selon la tradition familiale, ce livre d’heures aurait été donné par Charles IX à Louis II de Boissard (Mayaud, Troisième recueil de généalogies angevines et Revue historique et archéologique du Maine, 1997, p. 17-24). Les Boissard, famille angevine d’ancienne extraction, ont rendu des services à la couronne de France. "Demeurés catholiques mais non ligueurs, ils servent les rois légitimes pendant les guerres de Religion" (Mayaud, op. cit.). Louis I de Boissard (mort vers 1569) avait été chargé, en 1568, par Jean de Léaumont, gouverneur de l’Anjou, "de lever une bande 300 arquebusiers & de les employer à résister aux entreprises de ceux de la religion prétendue Réformée" (La Chesnaye des Bois). Son fils, Louis II de Boissard, fut maréchal du logis de Marguerite de France, sœur du duc d’Anjou qu’elle avait soutenu lors de la conjuration des Malcontents. "Suivant un certificat donné le 2 septembre 1590 par le comte de la Rochepot, lieutenant-général pour le roi au gouvernement d’Anjou, [il] rendit de grands services à Sa Majesté dans la réduction des places de-ça la rivière de Loire qu’il soumit à son obéissance. Un autre certificat, du 23 août 1592, donné par François de Bourbon, lieutenant-général des armées du roi, prouve aussi que Louis de Boissard rendit encore de grands services au siège de la ville de Mayenne où il se trouva" (La Chesnaye des Bois). Provenance : mention légèrement postérieure à l’encre au contreplat "Heures de Henry 4" (le nom du roi est biffé) et en dessous est ajouté "Charles 9 quand il vint en Anjou" (mention vraisemblablement fautive compte tenu de la présence des 𝛟 de François, et du fait que ces deux souverains n’ont pas été duc d’Anjou). -- Famille de Boissard (livre de raison tenu à partir de 1661). Référence : Voet, Plantin, 1368 ("the super de luxe-edition".
