A rare vintage film poster of the movie Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs from the first Belgian release in 1938.

Walt Disney Pictures.

Unfolded and linen backed.

Framed in obeche wood, card mount and UV plexiglass.

This poster was used for the Belgian release of the film in 1938. A year later when World War II started, posters in Belgium were printed much smaller owing to paper shortages. Even when the war ended, this larger format was never used again. It is exceptionally rare as this is only the second example of this poster to have surfaced in over 20 years.

This magical poster depicts many of the characters from Disney's Silly Symphony short cartoons, including several images of Mickey and Mini, Donald Duck, Goofy, Three Little Pigs, Wynken, Blynken, and Nod, together with Max Hare. In the 1930s it was usual for French cinemas to allocate a certain time for their features. This would enable them to choose a number of short films to be shown before the main feature. This is a stock poster, which enabled the individual cinemas to add their own text in the blank box in the middle of the piece to advertise what would be shown. In the case of this particular poster the program was forty minutes with Mickey, color animation - how to make animated drawings, Donald's Nephew, The Good and the Bad and Pretty Little Elves.

They were designed to stand just outside the cinemas or in the foyers. Due to their size and material they were very hard to store, and therefore the majority were discarded over time. These pieces have been conservation framed floating in bespoke UV plexiglass boxes. Less than five of these complete sets are known to have survived to the present day.

The American edition published in 1934 by Blue Ribbon Press is the first ever "waddle" title in which die-cut figures can be assembled into full three dimensional color figures. When attached to their legs with the brass pieces included, the figures can actually move down the ramp without contrivances. Instructions for assembling the figures are in the rear. Included are Mickey, Minnie, Pluto, and Tanglefoot (the horse). This Spanish edition is identical to the American edition except for the translated text. In spectacular condition, likely because it was the publisher's file copy.
