First edition, first printing of Stowe's impassioned antislavery novel, which she had been inspired to write after passage of the 1850 Fugitive Slave Law. Uncle Tom's Cabin was first published in serial form in the abolitionist periodical National Era. Originally it had been Stowe's intention to complete the work in a few issues of the magazine, but the public's interest in the story was so strong that she continued it for ten months (5 June 1851–April 1852). Prior to the printing of the last two serial installments, J. P. Jewett issued the two-volume work (20 March 1852). The novel was a runaway sensation, with over 120,000 copies sold by October 1852. "To those engaged in fighting slavery it appeared as an indictment of all the evils inherent in the system they opposed; to the pro-slavery forces it was a slanderous attack on 'the Southern way of life' ... Whatever its weaknesses as a literary work—structural looseness and excess of sentiment among them—the social impact of Uncle Tom's Cabin on the United States was greater than that of any book before or since" (PMM). Important Modern Literature from the Library of an American Filmmaker

Kerouac, Jack Typed letter to Allen Ginsberg, mournfully describing his most recent drinking binge, wishing to reform, before his summer at Big Sur 2 pages (278 x 214 mm), single-spaced on one leaf, n.p. [New York?], 6 May 1960; a little toned and creased. Kerouac struggles with alcoholism, restlessness and being "Fool King of the Beatniks with a crown of shit". Kerouac writes to Ginsberg following a "6 day horror binge" where he partied and drank alongside Nicholson, Carr, Gregory, Stella Brooks and others, finishing his breathless account with "God, I'm going to die this year." This obsession with death haunts his correspondence from the early summer of 1960—he desperately wants to reduce the drinking but continually falls back in with the New York Beat crowd and relapses into old habits. His life post On The Road has led to "wellmeaning admirers" wishing to spend time with Kerouac, distracting him from his writing; "it's this hysteria which is making success mudersome." He yearns for life when the Beats were still unknown—"it was better when for our writing-souls and abilities when we were obscure." As always, Kerouac desires to get back on the road, he wishes to go alone to Mexico, mentioning Ginsberg and Peter Orlovsky's upcoming trip to India. He discusses Neal Cassady and buying his typewriter. Cassady would be released from jail the following month. "I'll write to him I'm glad I can write to him. He won't give a shit one way or the other, I probably won't write to him." From this he suddenly flares up and berates Ginsberg for apparently telling people that Kerouac accuses him of copying and stealing his ideas, he goes on "I've said it a million times I copy and steal from you too." He states "I originated beat generation," and goes on "I started this literary renaissance, with great help from you surely but I discovered sketching, I discovered spontenaity, I discerned a new beat generation long time ago, I hitch hiked and starved, for art, and that makes me the Fool King of the Beatniks with a crown of shit, Thanks, america, so its not you I'm mad at, it's almost everything else..." In a further small final flourish, he continues "you are rapidly destroying the innocent babe in poetry And that goes for neal too with his cracks about how I was impressed with him..." This choleric lamentation and beration ends with a gentler "(poor allen) (see you later)." Kerouac's writings continued in this vein of frustration until July 1960 when, at Ferlinghetti's suggestion, he boards a train to Chicago to catch the California Zephyr west, to Big Sur. His stay in the cabin is immortalized in Big Sur (1962), and further described in lots 61, 62 and 63. REFERENCE: Not in Charters, presumably unpublished

Allosaurus Leg Bones Articulated Allosaurus fragilis Late Jurassic Period (approx. 150 million years ago) Morrison Formation, Bone Cabin Quarry, Albany County, Wyoming Articulated leg and foot measure 80 inches (203.2 cm) long, foot measures 15 x 19½ inches (38.1 x 49.5 cm). 88 inches (223.5 cm) tall with 20 x 24 inch (50.8 x 61 cm) base on custom display mount. The complete, articulated left leg and foot bones from a single, adult individual. Only the small claw of the first digit and metatarsal 5 are cast reproductions, otherwise all the bones are actual fossil. This Allosaurus specimen is well-preserved, showing no distortion, and is in very good condition. The natural coloration of the fossilized bones is a deep black, with surface detail preserving the scars for muscle attachment. Accurately displayed on a custom stand. This specimen has the distinction of originating from Bone Cabin Quarry, a classic Jurassic locality once excavated by the American Museum of Natural History in New York. This renowned site was discovered in 1897 and has produced many dinosaurs that are still on exhibit.

Contemporary limp vellum, plain endpapers and edges, remnants of two pairs of ties, title inked on spine. Half red morocco slipcase. First Italian edition of a major work of Arctic exploration, describing Willem Barentsz's three voyages in search of a Northeast Passage, two in the company of Huyghen van Linschoten. The author, Gerrit de Veer, served as ship's carpenter on the final two expeditions and based his account largely on his own diary. Most of the book is devoted to the third voyage of 1596–1597, one of the most celebrated in the history of polar exploration: after their ship was trapped in the ice near Novaya Zemlya, the company was forced to make the first over-wintering within the Arctic Circle. During the crew's makeshift winter quartering, de Veer was the first person to record the polar mirage now known as the Novaya Zemlya effect. The crew built a cabin from driftwood, which they named "Het Behouden Huys" (The Saved House), where they waited out the frigid winter, though many perished along the way. The engraved illustrations provide a vivid supplement to the description of the events — including depictions of crew's attempt to fend off of polar bears, to which several would succumb — but do not illustrate the games of coif (or golf) which provided exercise during the long and difficult winter months. In June 1597, after almost a year, with their ship still stuck in the ice and now occupied by polar bears, the surviving crew sailed and sledged in two open boats 1600 miles around the northern cape, down the length of Novaya Zemlya, and out across the White Sea to safety on the Kola Peninsula, where they found three Dutch ships, one commanded by Jan Cornelisz Rijp. Barentsz and several crew died of scurvy prior to the rescue. The ruins of hut in which the company over-wintered was later found by Norwegian whaler Elling Carlsen in 1871. White outer restraint later of white nylon canvas, integral helmet with soft hood and polycarbonate visor locking with gold anodized aluminum flange, complete with leather and lambskin communications cap outfitted with two microphones and labeled N 498 and p 58 in stitching. Support sling running horizontally across chest to crotch using webbed belts and metal clips. Integrated pressure valve on chest reading "ОТВЕРНУТЬ ДО СРЕДНЕГО УПОРА ПЕРЕД ПОЛЕТОМ РДСП 3" [unscrew fully to medium before flight RDSP 3], Zvezda "САЮМ" [Salyut] patch to right of valve. Lacing detail under arms and at hips. Arms with trussed sleeves with adjustable articulating cables and webbed belt lashings, left arm with USSR State Emblem patch, right arm with USSR Flag Patch. Pressure gauge on left sleeve; detachable gloves, and glove liners. Legs with pleated knee attaching to suit with zippers, each leg with utility pocket and soled boots attaching with zippers. Gloves marked "ГП-7-111-0380110" and "ГП-7-111-0150384" at cuff. VERY RARE SOKOL-KR ("FALCON") SPACESUIT, a version of the Sokol-K Rescue Spacesuit which was used on Soyuz 12, from 1973-1980. Zvezda made many refinements to the Sokol-K suit, and the Sokol-KR was a version that was designed to work with a regenerative life-support system on the TKS spacecraft. The suit was never flown, as the TKS never ended up flying a crew, though this suit was clearly used for training. The Sokol space suit was, and still is, worn by all who fly on the Soyuz spacecraft. The suit was developed from 1973-1979 with the goal of supporting a suited astronaut for up to 30 hours in a pressurized cabin and two hours in an unpressurized one. Described by manufacturer NPP Zvezda as a rescue suit, the Sokol was designed to keep the wearer alive in the event of an accidental depressurization rather than being used outside the spacecraft on an EVA. The suit was developed following the disastrous loss of the Soyuz 11 crew in 1971 through sudden depressurization, and its successor, the Sokol-KV2, was first used on the Soyuz T-2 mission, launched on June 5, 1980. Pale grey-blue outer restraint layer of nylon canvas with internal pressure bladder, left shoulder with patch of Zvezda, right shoulder with patch of USSR. Integral helmet with soft hood and polycarbonate visor locking with aluminum flange, complete with leather and lambskin communications cap outfitted with two microphones. Integrated pressure valve on chest reading "ОТВЕРНУТЬ ДО УПОРА ПЕРЕД ПОЛЕТОМ" [trans: open fully before flight]. Support sling running from chest to back using webbed belts and metal clips, arms with trussed sleeves with adjustable articulating cables and webbed belt lashings. Pressure gauge on left sleeve; detachable gloves marked "ГП-8P-8N27"at cuff. Eye & hook lacing mechanism running from chin to crotch, covered with vertical velcro placket, legs with pleated knees, each with utility pockets and integral soled boots marked "42" at soles. VERY RARE SOKOL SK-11 ("FALCON") SPACESUIT, a version of the Sokol K Rescue Spacesuit made only for the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project (ASTP) in 1975, this suit apparently being a test unit. The Sokol-K design was modified for the ASTP mission because of the difference in cabin pressure between the Apollo and Soyuz spacecrafts, with the Sokol SK-11 was designed to function at different pressure levels. While the Russian Soyuz spacecrafts operated at normal cabin pressure, the American Apollo spacecraft had an all oxygen atmosphere of 340 hPa, so to avoid any decompression sickness, the cabin atmosphere in the Soyuz-19 was set at 680 hPa with an increased oxygen content. The gloves of this particular suit are not the standard Sokol gloves, as both have an outside manual depressurisation valve, presumably to be used in the event of an emergency depressurization of the spacecraft.
