Alexander Yakovlevich Golovin, 1863-1930 a costume design for soliannikov in the role of kashchei in the firebird, 1921 signed with initials l.l. and further inscribed t.r. in Russian Zhar Ptitsa, Kashchei, Mr Soliannikov, Nr.24 watercolour and ink heightened with white on paper 30 by 20 cm., 11 3/4 by 8 in. The Firebird has remained one of the most popular Russian ballets since its premiere at the Opera in Paris in 1910. It is seen by many as one of the key early productions of Diaghilev's Ballets Russes company. Although Golovin's importance to the Ballet Russes was quickly overshadowed by that of Bakst, he was the chosen designer on the earliest Diaghilev productions, such as the opera Boris Godunov which was staged in 1908 a year before the formation of the Ballets Russes. Golovin designed most of the costumes for the original Firebird production in 1910. The following 24 designs (10 lots) are for the later production in Russia in 1921 at the Mariinsky Theatre. The 1921 designs are very different in style to those of the 1910 production. The earlier designs are roughly sketched in pencil and coloured with watercolour. Those of 1921 demonstrate the artists more mature style, highly finished with unusually great attention to small details, carefully drawn outlines in black pen and brightly coloured with watercolour. Some of the designs are further heightened with gold and silver paint. Delightfully, even in his costume designs Golovin has sought to fully capture the spirit of each character through facial expression and pose, particularly noticeable in the comic figures of Kashchei's wives. As with most of Golovin's designs, they are meticulously annotated with the names of the dancers the costumes were designed for. Two bear the names of Danilova and Balanchivadze (later Balanchine) both of whom defected to the West in 1924 (see lot 155). The designs were acquired by Mr B.L.Kilgour in the 1920s. After graduating from Harvard in 1926, and inheriting a considerable sum of money, he became aware of a large number of excellent quality Russian pieces coming on the market from the Russian government. He visited Russia three times in the 20s and acquired many fine works including icons, silverware, Faberge and paintings. He bequeathed his icon and Faberge collections to Cincinnati museums.
