CATHERINE OF ALEXANDRIA, SAINT [Southern Germany (Lake Constance?), c. 1470-1480] single sheet woodcut (193 x 142mm.; image 187 x 126mm.), with early hand-colouring, verso blank, no watermark, trimmed at edges A rare survival of a single sheet woodcut, a fine example of what would have been a relatively inexpensive devotional image. Its artistic qualities are limited (but not crude); there is a sense of perspective and movement to the stance of the executioner and the folds of drapery are delineated well, but the importance of the image was in the subject matter rather than the artistry. Three different woodcuts of St Catherine are recorded as belonging to a Dominican convent in Nuremberg (Origins of European Printmaking, p.47). Pietro Andrea Mattioli Commentarii, in libros sex Pedacii Dioscoridis Anazarbei, de medica materia. Adiectis quam plurimis plantarum & animalium imaginibus eodem authore. Venice: Vincenzo Valgrisi, 1554 FIRST LATIN EDITION, AND FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION, folio (327 x 232mm.), numerous woodcut illustrations, all but one hand-coloured in an early modern hand, EXTENSIVE MARGINAL ANNOTATIONS BY THREE EARLY MODERN ANNOTATORS (in Latin, Spanish, and English), later vellum with yapp edges, probably supplied from another volume, red edges, lacking title-page, some preliminary leaves, and final text leaf (α1-3, α5, α7-8 lacking; α4, α6 used as pastedowns; α7, α8 lacking; Nn6 lacking), old tear extending across pp1, old staining from α4-b6 with slight loss of text, illustration of fish on p6 crudely cut out by an early reader, z1 torn at outer margin with loss of some text, marginal closed tears to f2 and g5 This edition includes the first appearance of this set of woodcuts by Giorgio Liberale and Wolfgang Meyerpeck. Mattioli is most famous for his work on botany and medicine, though he wrote on various subjects, and his translations of/ commentaries on Dioscorides' De medica materia are his best known writings. His first Italian translation from the Greek was published in Venice in 1544, and was produced with the practical purpose of providing doctors with a treatise which would enable them to identify the medicinal plants described by Dioscorides. The success of this edition, and subsequent expanded editions in Italian published in 1548, 1550, and 1552, encouraged Mattioli to translate the work into Latin. This particular copy is interesting for its annotations in the hands of three early modern readers. Two of these annotators appear to be continental owners, writing in Latin and Spanish respectively. The third, ?eighteenth century English annotator often writes the common English names of plants in the margins, occasionally accompanying these manuscript captions with a rhyming couplet (e.g. "No poyson fear | When Sage and Rue grow near" (p. 348)). However, this English reader clearly had a Classical education, and at the lower margin of the final index leaf transcribes the Latin inscription found on the tombstone of Mattioli in the Cathedral of Trento, suggesting that the book might perhaps have been acquired on a Grand Tour. [Erfurt: Hans Knappe, c. 1512] folio (299 x 215mm.), A-P6 Q8, comprising full-page woodcut illustrations only, later limp vellum, lacking quires D-G6, a few small tears to binding A publication containing the fine woodcut illustrations to Vegetius but without the actual text; Hans Knappe of Erfurt had previously issued an edition of the text in German translation in 1511, with most of the woodcuts (VD16 V465), but this edition contains an additional seventy odd illustrations not issued with that text. The woodcuts are partly based on an earlier Vegetius printed in Augsburg in around 1475, and contain anachronistic illustrations of cannons and soldiers in contemporary costume, indicating that the book was intended for practical rather than academic use. VD16 ascribes the woodcuts to Peter von Mainz, an artist working in Erfurt at the time, whose initials appear on the title-page woodcut. The editor, Johann von Cube or Wonnecke, was a Frankfurt physician who compiled this manual using the works of Dioscorides, Galen and Pliny as well as contemporary writers. The Latin text of the manual was first printed (and commissioned?) by Peter Schöffer in 1484, who subsequently published a German translation the following March. This vernacular version was quickly copied by other printers; Schönsperger's first version appeared in August 1485 and he produced at least six more editions, including the present one. LORENZO GIUSTINIANI. Dottrina della vita monastica. [Venice: Bernardino Benali, for Lazzaro Suardi?], 20 October 1494 An unusual printing with woodcuts on the first and last leaves, acting as temporary decorative wrappers, in the manner of the modern dust-jacket, with the letterpress title printed above both woodcuts. These woodcut wrappers are found on a group of nine Venetian devotional works in the vernacular, printed in 1493 and 1494, and all produced by Benalius. The privilege for the present work was granted to Benalius in February 1494, and as Lazarus de Soardis was also granted a privilege on the same day, it can be inferred that the two were working together, presumably as printer and publisher. The woodcut wrappers depict St John the Baptist and St Peter on the upper cover, and St John the Evangelist and St Francis on the lower cover, each pair of figures holding up a cartouche containing a holy name. The third woodcut, opposite the start of the text, depicts the author, Lorenzo Giustiniani (1381-1456), holding a book while in the process of blessing, which is a reverse copy of Gentile Bellini’s portrait of Giustiniani (now in the Museo dell’Accademia, Venice).

[Binding] A Ventriloquist. Np, [early 19th century] Pamphlet of 4 bifolia, sewn (160 x 95 mm). Pictorial wrapper with a hand-colored woodcut vignette depicting a ventriloquist and birds, ruled in decorative woodcut border; wrapper worn at extremities and soiled. Blank book with handwritten recipes in ink and pencil; pages foxed and worn. An early American blank book. The woodcut featured on the wrapper was frequently used on playbills advertising the ventriloquists Richard Potter and John Rannie. Potter, who has been called America's first Black celebrity, was the first American-born magician to gain acclaim. Dinah, Potter’s mother, was enslaved in Guinea as a teenager and brought to Massachusetts. She was emancipated when the Massachusetts Constitution abolished slavery—decades before the Emancipation Proclamation—and Potter, born in 1783, lived as a free man. He likely traveled to Europe when he was only ten years old, where he joined a circus and became an apprentice under the Scottish magician John Rannie. The two returned to the United States in 1800, where both grew famous for their ventriloquism, rope dancing, balancing, and acting. Rannie, upon retiring and returning to Scotland in 1811, encouraged Potter to continue as a solo act, which he did to great success. The woodcuts for the Old Testament were also issued by Trechsel under the title Historiarum veteris instrumenti icones ad vivum expressae (Mortimer, Harvard French 276), later in 1538. Holbein's woodcuts, possibly cut by Hans Lützenberger, were greatly influential in the development of bible illustrations and widely imitated in subsequent Lyon bibles. The text used here by Trechsel was based on Robert Estienne's of 1528, though it is suggested that it was edited by Michael Servetus, who was employed by the Trechsels at the time this text was first printed by them, in 1532 (see Darlow & Moule, under entry 6112; Fulton, Servetus, 26-27). Galpin complaining about the poor quality of the woodcuts in the Magazine of Art, edited by Galpin ("...I have dwelt repeatedly on the increasing danger, and mischief, of making the black ground of the woodcut a source of false sensation..."), 3 pages, 8vo, headed stationery of Brantwood, Coniston, Lancashire, 11 November 1886; with autograph envelope The issue of the Magazine of Art that had been sent to Ruskin included a number of woodcuts by Carl van Haanen of Venetian subjects. After expressing his disappointment at dark and gloomy woodcuts (and indeed a poor quality reproduction of Turner's 'Fighting Temeraire'), Ruskin concludes his letter with the hope that Gilpin will in the future commission woodcuts that express "the beauty of nature and art - not their terrors, or grotesqueness".

Gart der Gesundheit [Edited by Johann von Cube]. Augsburg: Johann Schönsperger, 7 March 1487 Chancery folio (240 x 180mm.), an incomplete copy comprising leaves e2-e7, f2-y4, y6-G7, I1, I3-7, H1-5 (complete collation of 262 leaves: [4] a-v w-z A-D8 E6 F8 G-H6 I8, first and last leaves blank), double column, gothic type, 42 lines, numerous woodcuts with colour washes, later boards with manuscript title "Kreüter Buech" on upper cover, e5 torn without loss, k1 torn with loss at lower corner, n8 torn with loss of almost half the leaf, A1 torn with slight loss, other more marginal tearing and staining, some leaves detached, binding worn; sold not subject to return A coloured copy of this popular and comprehensive manual of botany and medicine. The editor, Johann von Cube or Wonnecke, was a Frankfurt physician who compiled this manual using the works of Dioscorides, Galen and Pliny as well as contemporary writers. The Latin text of the manual was first printed (and commissioned?) by Peter Schöffer in 1484, who subsequently published a German translation the following March. This vernacular version was quickly copied by other printers; Schönsperger's first version appeared in August 1485 and he produced at least six more editions, including the present one. (Siena: Francesco di Simione, for the bookseller Giovanni d’Alessandro, October 1545), 4 ff., woodcut of the devil seizing a man on first page, a few small holes in first two leaves with slight loss of text Giovanni Tordi. The first work is a record of the Palio held in Siena at the feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in August 1546, written by the Sienese bookseller Cecchino, which featured bullfights instead of the usual horse race. Simone Serdini (c. 1360-1421) was a Sienese poet who, like Dante, was exiled from his city for political reasons and wandered the courts of northern Italy. Serdini's poem of despair written in terza rima, Cerbero invoco, is supposedly accompanied by Antonio Tebaldeo's La disperata, but this text was actually written by Il Pistoia. While this imprint is not recorded elsewhere, the title-page woodcut of the devil is very similar to the one used by Lorenzo Morgiani in Florence for his editions from the late fifteenth century (Rhodes nos 4, 5 and 8). Tordi's work commemorates in verse the victory of the Sienese against the Florentines under Clement VII at Camollia in 1526.
