MacArthur, Douglas A contemporary transcript signed ("Douglas MacArthur") of General MacArthur's radio address announcing the end of the War in the Pacific, delivered aboard the U.S.S. Missouri, 2 September 1945 4 leaves (237 x 160 mm), typed on rectos only, headed "Aboard the USS Missouri / September 2, 1945 / Address of General Douglas MacArthur," signed at the foot of the fourth page at conclusion of text, date-stamped on the same page "Sep 2 1945," accompanied by an envelope postmarked "U.S. Navy Sep 2 1945" and "USS Skagit, Tokyo Bay," in which the transcript was sent by sailor J. H. Brooks to his wife in Lakewood, Ohio. Half blue morocco slipcase, chemise. "Today the guns are silent": Douglas MacArthur addresses the American people after accepting the surrender of the Empire of Japan, marking the end of World War II. The unconditional surrender of the German armed forces ended the Second World War in Europe on 7 May 1945. The Supreme Allied Commander for that theatre, Dwight Eisenhower, had issued a characteristically terse statement of the fact: "The mission of this Allied Force was fulfilled at 0241, local time, May 7th, 1945." But fighting continued in the Pacific for nearly four more months, and when the Japanese finally signed the official instrument of surrender, the Supreme Allied Commander of the Pacific, Douglas MacArthur, also delivered a characteristic statement. Perhaps already looking ahead to his (unsuccessful) foray into presidential politics, MacArthur addressed the American public directly, via radio, and laid out at some length his thoughts on the just-completed war and his vision for the future. "Today the guns are silent. A great tragedy has ended. A great victory has been won. The skies no longer rain death—the seas bear only commerce—men ever[y]where walk upright in the sunlight. The entire world lies quietly at peace. And in reporting this to you, the people, I speak for the thousands of silent lips, forever stilled among the jungles and the beaches and in the deep waters of the Pacific which marked the way. … A new era is upon us. Even the lesson of victory itself brings with it profound concern, both for our future security and survival of civilization. The destructiveness of the war potential, through progressive advance in scientific discovery, has in fact now reached a point which revises the traditional concept of war. … "We have had our last chance. If we do not devise some greater and more equitable system, Armageddon will be at our door. … We stand in Tokyo today reminiscent of our countryman Commodore Perry ninety two years ago. His purpose was to bring to Japan an era of enlightenment and progress by lifting the veil of isolation to the friendship, trade, and commerce of the world. But, alas, the knowledge thereby gained of Western science was forged into an instrument of oppression and human enslavement. … We are committed by the Potsdam Declaration of principles to see that the Japanese people are liberated from this condition of slavery." MacArthur concludes with a tribute to the American forces that must have been meant to appeal as well to American voters: "And so, my fellow countrymen, today I report to you that your sons and daughters have served you well and faithfully with the calm, deliberate, determined fighting spirit of the American soldier, and sailor, based upon a position of historical truth, as against the fanaticism of an enemy supported only by mythological fiction. Their spiritual strength and power has brought us through to victory. They are homeward bound—take care of them." Transcripts of MacArthur's speech are much less common in the market than are copies of Eisenhower's taciturn statement. The present copy is one of just two that can be linked to the spot of the Japanese surrender. The U.S.S. Skagit, on which J. H. Brooks served, was a Tolland-class attack cargo ship. She was commissioned on 2 May 1945, and sailed first to Marseille. She left France at the end of June, bound for Manila with cargo and passengers. Arriving in Manila in mid August, the Skagit resupplied and sailed for Japan; she was present for the surrender ceremony in Tokyo Bay on 2 September 1945. Property from the Eric C. Caren Collection (WORLD WAR II) Teletype of Emperor Hirohito's Surrender Address, 15 August 1945 Printed teletype transmission on paper (30 1/4 x 8 3/8 in.; 770 x 212 mm), headed "To the Japanese People from Emperor Hirohito," and directed "To Col. A. Sinkov: GHA Signal Office"; browned, some stains from earlier tape repair, a few tears and chips. The consignor has independently obtained a letter of authenticity from PSA that will accompany the lot. "We have ordered Our Government to communicate to the Governments of the United States, Great Britain, China and the Soviet Union that Our Empire accepts the provisions of their Joint Declaration." By the summer of 1945, with Germany vanquished, the Allies were planning an invasion of Japan and, in the Potsdam Declaration of 26 July 1945, they demanded that the Japanese armed forces surrender unconditionally or face "prompt and utter destruction." When Japan hesitated, President Truman authorized the use of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, August 6 and 9, respectively. Facing "utter destruction," Emperor Hirohito uncharacteristically intervened with Japan's Supreme Council for the Direction of the War and ordered the surrender. The Emperor delivered a radio address to the nation on August 15. In the address, Hirohito acknowledges the cruelty of atomic weapons, but he also avoided using the term "surrender." The official English translation of his address was made by Tadaichi Hirakawa. "To strive for the common prosperity and happiness of all nations as well as the security and well-being of Our subjects is the solemn obligation which has been handed down by Our Imperial Ancestors, and which We lay close to heart. … But now the war has lasted for nearly four years. Despite the best that has been done by every one … the war situation has developed not necessarily to Japan's advantage, while the general trends of the world have all turned against her interest. Moreover, the enemy has begun to employ a new and most cruel bomb, the power of which to do damage is indeed incalculable, taking the toll of many innocent lives. Should we continue to fight, it would not only result in an ultimate collapse and obliteration of the Japanese nation, but also it would lead to the total extinction of human civilization. Such being the case, how are We to save the millions of Our subjects; or to atone Ourselves before the hallowed spirits of Our Imperial Ancestors? This is the reason why We have ordered the acceptance of the provisions of the Joint Declaration of the Powers. …" Abraham Sinkov, to whom this transcript was directed, was a cryptanalyst in the U.S. Army's Signals Intelligence Service; after the war, he served as a deputy director of the National Security Agency.

Beatrix Potter Four autograph letters signed (“H.B. Heelis”), to Professor and Mrs James Hanley, arranging a visit (“…I shall be pleased to offer such rations as available, mainly lettuces!...”), then discussing wartime food production and land management on her Lake District farms (“…The most useful work is draining, fox killing, keeping walls repaired, and brackens…”), 9 pages, 4to and 8vo, Castle Cottage, Sawrey, Ambleside, 16 July 1942–26 March 1943, with an autograph copy of a letter to the Kendal War Agricultural Executive Committee on fields that they have demanded she bring into food production (2 pages, 13 March 1943), an autograph envelope, two retained copies of letters by Hanley, and an unrelated photograph BEATRIX POTTER ON FARMING IN THE LAKE DISTRICT IN WARTIME. Britain’s survival during World War II depended upon increasing domestic food production. Farmers were called upon to bring more land into production, and War Agricultural Executive Committees were established in every county with wide-ranging powers to manage and direct the actions of farmers. Beatrix Heelis (as she was known following her marriage to William Heelis in 1912) had spent decades building up extensive holdings in the Lake District—at her death in 1943 she left 4000 acres and 14 farms to the National Trust, a hugely important bequest that has helped to ensure the survival of the Lakeland landscape. In 1942, however, her concern was that those estates play should their part in the war effort, so she invited J.A. Hanley, Professor of Agriculture at Leeds University, to visit and give advice on how to increase production. The letters discuss such subjects as the difficulties in ploughing the stony hills of the Lake District for potatoes, the unreliability of the weather, sheep and cattle farming, her sometimes testy relationship with the Cumbrian WAEC, and the need for government support (“…The present lime subsidy stands in a class apart. It is a gift to the soil—what is the old saying ‘Earth’s honest, what you give it—it will repay.’…”) PROVENANCE: Sale, Dawson’s of Maidenhead, 24 February 2018, lot 256

WORLD WAR II--HONG KONG INSTRUMENT OF SURRENDER Typed document agreeing an unconditional surrender of all Japanese Armed Forces in Hong Kong, in accordance with the Japanese surrender of 2 September, signed (the signatures possibly secretarial) by Major General Umekichi Okada and Vice Admiral Ruitaro Fujita on behalf of the Japanese Armed Forces, each with red ink stamp, and by Rear Admiral Cecil Halliday Jepson Harcourt (twice) on behalf of the Allies, 1 page, folio, Government House, Hong Kong, 16 September 1945; frays and tears on right edge not affecting text, minor dust staining A POWERFUL RECORD OF ONE OF THE FINAL ACTS OF WORLD WAR II. Japan had invaded the British colony of Hong Kong on 8 December 1941 - the day after the attack on Pearl Harbour - and conquered the island after 18 days of fierce fighting. The three years and eight months of Japanese occupation were characterised by fear, hunger, brutality, forced deportation, and the the savage treatment of prisoners. About 10,000 people were killed during the occupation. The Japanese capitulated on 15 August, after the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the British moved quickly to regain control of Hong Kong. Franklin Grimson, who had been Colonial Secretary of Hong Kong at the time of the invasion, was released from his internment camp on 16 August and immediately proclaimed himself acting governor. The British Pacific Cruiser Squadron, commanded by Rear Admiral Cecil Harcourt, sailed into Victoria Harbour on 30 August. This document was signed at the formal surrender ceremony that took place at Government House some two weeks after the British arrived back in Hong Kong. A small number of copies of this document were evidently signed at the ceremony. There is a copy in the Imperial War Museum (HSR/V/8) - who also hold Admiral Fujita's ceremonial sword, presented to Harcourt at the surrender - and at least one other copy in private hands (sold in these rooms 28 May 1983, lot 80). This copy belonged to a Vice Admiral in the British Pacific Fleet in 1945. To view Shipping Calculator, please click here

World War II—Oberkommando Des Heeres Das Britische Kriegsheer. [np., April 1942] 8vo (226 x 165mm), thumb-index, seven maps and charts loosely inserted, original red printed boards, indistinct ink-stamp, pencil inscription on front free endpapers, ("Found among the Germ. 'PIONIER' documents at Hochfilzen/Tyrol 28/7/1945"), corners bumped AN EXCEPTIONALLY RARE GERMAN INTELLIGENCE DOCUMENT. The capture of a copy of this German assessment of the British Order of Battle during the Dieppe Raid of 19 August 1942 was a key moment in the Intelligence war against Nazi Germany: it provided compelling evidence of the potential for strategic deception, which would be used to stunning effect in the lead-up to D-Day. Das Britische Kriegsheer provided a detailed picture of British forces, which the Abwehr had built up from their firm knowledge of the pre-war British Order of Battle, air photographic reconnaissance, wireless intercepts, and espionage. MI5 analysts judged it to be substantially accurate but noted that it included a significant number of spurious divisions that had been invented by imaginative handlers at MI6 and fed to the Germans by Renato Levi, a double agent (code-named CHEESE), in order to inflate Allied strength in the Middle East. This unambiguous evidence that the Abwehr had been successfully duped helped to give the British confidence to engage in strategic deception on an astonishing scale, mostly notably Operation Fortitude, which convinced the Germans that the main Allied invasion of 1944 would be launched against the Pas-de-Calais – a conviction that German High Command retained even after D-Day. This successful subterfuge saved thousands of allied lives and was credited by General Eisenhower as a key factor behind the success of the Normandy Landings. If it had not been for the evidence provided by Das Britische Kreigsheer it is unlikely that operations on the scale of Fortitude would have been contemplated. Das Britische Kreigsheer is exceptionally rare as almost all copies will have been destroyed by the Reichswehr before the end of World War II. The copy captured at Dieppe is not known to survive, there are no copies recorded on JISC or WorldCat, there is no copy in the Imperial War Museum, and there are no auction records for this 1942 edition (only for a later edition of 1944, which does not have the same historical significance).

Property from the Collection of John M. and Elly B. Beard EISENHOWER, DWIGHT D. A large archive of correspondence and other materials between Dwight D. Eisenhower and Sir James Gault, a British brigadier and military assistant to General Eisenhower in the United Kingdom during World War II Collection of 110 typed letters signed ("Ike"; "Ike E"; "DE"; "Ike Eisenhower" [including, inevitably, a few autopen signatures]), totaling 121 pages on a variety of letterheads (including War Department The Chief of Staff; DDE; The White House), various places, 22 November 1945–18 October 1968, a few with autograph postscripts, many with autograph salutation ("Dear Jimmy"); some hole-punched in upper left corner for filing and a very few torn there. — Together with: an autograph note signed by Douglas MacArthur on a copy of an article by P. H. Spaak ("Doug Mac A") to Eisenhower, which Ike has annotated "De Gaulle ought to have a copy D.E."; a portrait photograph of Eisenhower by Bertram Park, mounted, signed by the photographer in pencil and inscribed by the sitter "To Jimmy Gault—with lasting appreciation for loyal and official service on the Mediterranean campaign of ’45 and in the ETO. From his friend Dwight D. Eisenhower"; letters signed by Mrs. Eisenhower, John Eisenhower, and various of Eisenhower's military and civilian aides; a large collection of photographs (ca. 300) of Eisenhower and others both during and after the War, many with captions and credits of the U.S. Army, British War Office, or civilian press agencies; ephemera relating to various events, including the Service of Commemoration of American dead, St. Paul's Cathedral, 4 July 1951; and a large group of correspondence and other papers of Gault, many relating to arrangements for visits to Great Britain by the Eisenhowers and to the establishment and organization of the Eisenhower Room at Culzean Castle. A correspondence of more than two decades between Eisenhower and his former military assistant, frequently discussing the President's apartment at Culzean Castle, as well as forthcoming visits and arrangements. While the later letters tend to brief and informal notes of thanks, requests, and birthday greetings, the letters written in the aftermath of World War II are frequently substantive and illuminating. Among other topics, Ike writes about his memoir, Crusade in Europe ("I am attempting to be completely and thoroughly honest in the whole business. This means that I have to drag out into the open the differences of conviction and opinion that I had from time to time with such people as Mr. Churchill, Field Marshal Brooke and Field Marshal Montgomery. I do the same in my occasional differences with some of the Americans, for instance George Patton. However, I am trying to be completely objective and certainly in no instance do I believe that anything I shall say can be considered belittling or hurtful"; 1 March 1948), his painting ("You may possibly have heard of my latest hobby—that of dabbling in oil. I have found this truly to be an excellent form of relaxation, and I frankly must admit that after a year, even I can see some improvement in my 'works of art'"; 10 March 1949), and politics ("The papers have just announced that our old friend Harold Macmillan is to be the new Prime Minister. I suppose if anyone had told the two of us in Algiers in '43 that one day he was to be Prime Minister of Britain and I the President of this country, we would have thought such a prophet to be completely mad. The wheels of the Gods apparently not only grind slowly, but they grind along unexpected and wholly astonishing courses"; 10 January 1957). Evelyn Waugh Two autograph letters signed: i) To Winston Churchill, as First Lord of the Admiralty, asking if “you have any use for me in the Navy, in intelligence, public relations, or any other department?”, 1 page, 8vo, headed stationery of Pixton Park, Dulverton, 10 October [1939], punch holes and pin holes ii) To “Dear Sir”, asking for his support in Waugh’s request for a commission in the Royal Marines, explaining that Churchill has “strongly recommended” him, and outlining his credentials, 2 pages, 4to, “as from Pixton Park, Dulverton”, 7 November [1939], punch hole and pin holes “…I was 36 a few days ago and can honestly say that I am fitter physically than I was ten years ago. I am a writer by profession but most of my leisure has been spent in travel, most of it of a strenuous kind. I have equipped & led small caravans in Abyssinia & South America and have been on a sledging expedition in Spitzbergen. I had an undistinguished career in the OTC at Lancing, ending as a lance corporal. After that I went to Hartford, Oxford and took a third in history. I have been a newspaper correspondent in various parts of the world. My knowledge of foreign languages is, alas, negligible…” Evelyn Waugh was determined to serve his country following the outbreak of war with Nazi Germany in September 1939. His initial approaches to the War Office, naval intelligence, and the Welsh Guards were, however, rejected. Both Churchill and Brendan Bracken supported his request for a commission in the Royal Marines, which he received in November 1939. He found military service frustrating and dispiriting, but it provided the raw material for the Sword of Honour trilogy.
