Defined by its elongated, slim rectangular case that gracefully curves to follow the natural contour of the wrist, the Cintrée was a triumph of both ergonomics and aesthetics. Unlike many rectangular watches, which rely on hinges or friction fittings, the Cintrée’s case back is securely pressed into the upper case and held by small screws, creating a seamless integration that ensures a sleek and refined profile. Over the decades, the model has remained a rare and highly sought-after timepiece, typically available only by special order. During the late 1960s, a time of cultural and artistic transformation, Cartier London introduced its own interpretation of the Tank Cintrée, setting it apart from the Paris version with several distinctive design modifications. This period – shaped by the energy of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Mary Quant’s revolutionary fashion movement – saw London become a global centre for creativity and reinvention. Cartier London fully embraced this spirit, breaking from tradition to produce some of the most unconventional and daring wristwatches in its history. The London Tank Cintrée reflected this shift with its exaggerated curvature, creating a sculptural form that closely hugged the wrist. Its creamy white dial, stripped of a traditional minute track, emphasised its minimalist yet striking aesthetic. Meanwhile, the Roman numerals – stretched, thick, and bold – dominated the dial space, amplifying its avant-garde character. These elements, combined with the pronounced curve of the case, transformed the Cintrée into a powerful statement piece, bridging the gap between classic elegance and modern innovation – features that were also found in the London Maxi Oval. The London Tank Cintrée was produced in different sizes, From 1945 to 1974, Cartier London was led by Jean-Jacques Cartier, son of Jacques Cartier. Having apprenticed in Paris, Jean Jacques brought a deep passion for design and craftsmanship, steering the London workshop toward some of Cartier’s most radical and inventive timepieces. His tenure coincided with the cultural revolution of the Swinging Sixties, inspiring a new wave of independent creativity within Cartier London. Watches such as the Crash, Maxi Oval, and Pebble were developed exclusively in London during this era, each retaining the essence of the Cartier DNA while boldly reinterpreting it for a new era. Jean-Jacques worked closely with Rupert Emmerson, Cartier London’s chief designer, to bring these extraordinary timepieces to life. Once designs were finalized, each watch was meticulously handcrafted at the Wright & Davies workshop on Rosebery Avenue, under the leadership of Albert ‘Sam’ Mayo. Producing the case of a London Cintrée required over 35 hours of craftsmanship, with additional components, such as leather straps and deployant buckles, made in-house. The final assembly took place at Cartier’s Bond Street workshop under Eric Denton’s supervision. This painstaking process ensured that each watch was a masterpiece of exclusivity and exceptional quality, often requiring weeks or even months to complete. Predominantly produced between 1966 and 1974, Cartier London wristwatches from this era remain among the rarest and most extraordinary ever made. As the only Cartier branch still owned by a family member, Jean-Jacques Cartier’s London workshop carved out a distinctive identity, balancing bold creativity with impeccable craftsmanship. His visionary approach secured Cartier London’s place in the brand’s illustrious history, producing watches that continue to captivate collectors and enthusiasts alike.

Cartier Tank Cintrée Dual Time A very rare yellow gold dual time wristwatch, Circa 1975 Dial: silvered Calibre: cal. 846 mechanical, 17 jewels Case: 18k yellow gold, case back secured by 4 screws Case number: 034'035 Closure: camel unsigned leather strap and 18k yellow gold Cartier folding clasp Size: 39.5 mm length x 19.5 mm width Signed: case and dial; movement signed Jaeger-LeCoultre Accessories: Cartier presentation box This incredibly rare Cartier dual time watch, appearing on the international market for the first time, gathers all the characteristics that make it a true gem for discerning collectors. Commissioned in the 1970’s, it is believed that fewer than ten examples were ever produced, with some fine differences such as the metal and dial colours. This example is presented in the traditional configuration with a yellow gold case and silvered dial, providing the piece with a timeless elegance. The case construction features details typical of the earlier production, most noticeably the eagle beak lugs. It is powered by two independent Jager-LeCoultre manual winding movements, with each crown placed vertically between the lugs. The brancards as well as the glass form a slight angle to subtly mark the separation between the two dials, increasing the readability of the watch. In the same effort, Cartier used different indexes for the two dials with quarter Roman indexes at 6 o’clock and bold baton quarter indexes at 12 o’clock. According to the family tradition of the original owner, the watch was commissioned for a member of European noble family. The engraving on the case back “G.v.F” is thought to refer to Grafïn von F., a countess of a German aristocratic house. Furthermore, the watch displaying home and local times would have been used for travelling during the golden era of aviation history, at a time when the Concorde started its first commercial flights in 1976. Years later, this dual time complication and the layout of this confidential series of watches certainly served as an inspiration to create several references, such as the Cintrée and the Tonneau dual time in the early 1990’s from the pre-CPCP collection and later on the Tank Louis and Tank à vis form the celebrated CPCP collection. The present lot is preserved in superb condition, featuring its original elements, including its deployant buckle. Combining exceptional rarity, historical significance, and elegant design, it represents a unique opportunity to acquire an important Cartier timepiece from one of the Maison’s most exclusive and elusive production periods.

Flipping the watch over, one will also see a distinctly, almost exaggeratively cursive "Cartier Paris" signature on the case back and inside the folding clasp. The case shape is, of course, a variant of the Cintrée, one of the most iconic and coveted Cartier models. The clasp itself is also rendered in pink gold, a hallmark of vintage Cartier. Alone, these features are already enough to pique the interest of Cartier collectors, but it is only when the case back is opened that an awe-inspiring realisation can be made. Though on the outside this watch is a Paris Cartier through and through, of course complete with its full suite of French hallmarks, there is nothing on the inside of the watch to indicate that it is anything but a Swiss made Vacheron Constantin. The inside case back is prominently adorned with two Maltese Crosses, the Vacheron Constantin signature, as well as being signed "Swiss". The movement used is Vacheron's own calibre 1052, often found in their women's watches of the period, also prominently Swiss signed. Indeed, the present Paris Tank belongs to a very small and seldom seen batch of wristwatches manufactured for Cartier by Vacheron Constantin. This watch not only represents a period that can be described as the golden age of Cartier Paris, where collaboration and experimentation was commonplace and resulted in beautiful and often unique creations, but is also a true bridge between a horological powerhouse and the master of design, during a period where both were at their best.

It is not only one of the most famous, widespread and influential designs in wristwatch history, but has also remained culturally relevant virtually since its creation. 4 years after the creation of the very first Tank, the Normale, Cartier introduced what would become one of its most coveted Tank variations: the Cintrée. French for “curved”, the watch was considered extremely oversized when it was unveiled in 1921. To aid its wearability but also as an elegant design feature, the entire case of the watch is, as the name would suggest, quite dramatically curved. This bold aesthetic has allowed the Cintrée to remain extremely relevant until the present day, more than a century after its creation. The original run of Tank Cintrée wristwatches were manufactured by Cartier in France in three sizes: small, medium and large. Aside from the differences in case size and some minor dial variations, the more technical differentiation between them is the size of the movement, with each size using a 7, 8 or 9 ligne movement respectively. The large size with 9 ligne movement is widely considered to be the most desirable of all vintage Cintrée production as the case curvature is the most pronounced. Though the Cintrée strictly followed the original Tank blueprint for the first few years of production, it is observed that Cartier began to produce dial variations within the Cintrée line towards the mid to late 1920s. The present watch is no different, with the traditional Roman numerals and wide railroad track found in other examples of the period replaced with highly stylised Arabic numerals along with a narrower track. A similar example can be found in the Harry Fane collection. As all inter-war Cartiers were produced in extremely limited quantities, the many dial variations make watches from this period even more collectible. The eccentric Arabic dial paired with the beautiful and original Breguet hands, or “Apple” hands in Cartier speak, all housed within the large size 9 ligne case really tick all the boxes when it comes to a top tier vintage Cartier Tank Cintrée. The present watch is not only offered in a sought after configuration, but connoisseurs will recognise the attractive condition that it is presented in as well. Present and correct are twin French hallmarks, one on the case band and one on the case back, as well as a set of 3 case numbers. The yellow gold case has charmingly oxidised in some areas, likely indicating that it has not been polished in some time. Also included is the original Cartier folding clasp constructed out of both yellow and pink gold, as is typical for all vintage Cartier, and is also double stamped with a Cartier number. All of these attributes combine to make this lot an absolute must-see for any discerning collector.
