Churchill cautions Guest against accepting employment in Australia or New Zealand ("*...you are not suited for it & wd not enjoy it... Bombay wd be a different matter...*") before urging him instead to embrace an invitation from the Irish Nationalists: "...accept with alacrity the Nationalist invitation to go to Dublin... a most useful & valuable idea... make the best speech you can there and make them feel you are their friend... am most anxious you shd make no mistakes...". The recipient, Ivor Churchill Guest, later 1st Viscount Wimborne (1873–1939), was Churchill's first cousin and a fellow Liberal politician. Having crossed the floor with Churchill from the Conservatives in 1904 over Free Trade, Guest had become one of Asquith's junior ministers. The present letter captures Churchill acting as both political strategist and trusted family adviser, encouraging Guest to strengthen relations with Irish Nationalists at a moment when the ‘Third Home Rule Bill’ dominated British politics. Only four months earlier Churchill had travelled to Belfast to advocate Home Rule, where violent Unionist opposition forced his meeting to be relocated under police protection. Written from the Admiralty, this letter provides an unusually direct insight into Churchill's private efforts to cultivate support for the Liberal Government's Irish policy. Accompanying the letter is a rare copy of Jeremiah MacVeagh's Home Rule in a Nutshell: A Pocket Book for Speakers and Electors, ‘Third Edition, Revised and Enlarged’, London, The Daily Chronicle, 1912, original printed wrappers. This is the first edition to contain Winston Churchill's substantial introductory essay, written while serving as First Lord of the Admiralty, and issued specifically to support the Liberal Government's Home Rule campaign. Intended as a practical handbook for politicians and campaigners, the pamphlet distils the constitutional arguments in favour of Irish self-government and represents one of Churchill's earliest separately published political contributions on Ireland. Surviving copies are scarce, particularly in original wrappers, and the work is regarded by Churchill collectors as the first appearance of his writing in this influential publication. Together, the letter and pamphlet form an exceptional historical pairing. The pamphlet sets out Churchill's public case for Home Rule, while the letter reveals his private attempts to influence events behind the scenes, encouraging a close political ally to travel to Dublin and win the confidence of Irish Nationalists. Few surviving Churchill manuscripts can be so closely linked to a contemporary printed work embodying the very policy under discussion. As such, the collection offers a rare opportunity to acquire both Churchill's public voice and his private counsel at one of the most consequential moments in the constitutional history of the United Kingdom.
