The author’s name is only given in Arabic in this publication, but ‘Ma Liangjun’ and ‘Muhammad Yusuf Hijrani’ are the same person; ’Ma’ being synonymous with the Arabic ‘Muhammad’ among the Hui population and ‘Hijrani’ being the Arabic name Ma Liangjun appointed himself. He was a prominent local figure that advocated peace and national unity in Xinjiang and was responsible for much of the modernisation and development in the local Islamic education systems. He authored many books and articles in Arabic, Persian and Chinese, many of these were Islamic in nature. As well as making a significant literary contribution to Islamic studies in Xinjiang, he was also a progressive figure in China Hui cultural developments. The first part of this text deals primarily in Islamic theology, with commentaries by the author on a number of Islamic scholars including al-Taftazani. The second part of the text comprises a number of shorter extracts on astronomy, includes maps of the world and touches on global affairs including the Serbian Campaign of 1914. Examples of Arabic printing in China are rare and the variations in transliteration make it difficult to find comparables on Western databases, but no other copies of this author’s works have been traced on OCLC.

It was a good punch, but I didn't think I hit him so hard he couldn't have gotten up [...] [P]eople said maybe the first fight was fixed. So the second time, I wanted to whup him bad. I didn't want him making excuses or quitting. I wanted him to get up, so I could show everyone how great I was." — Muhammad Ali (quoted in Hauser) Ali's swift and crushing defeat of Sonny Liston in the first round of their second title fight in May of 1965 remains not only one of the most iconic moments of Ali's storied career and of boxing history — but also in all of sports. An almost 2-1 underdog, Ali's knockout after less than two minutes was famously captured in photographer Neil Leifer's legendary image of Ali towering over the fallen Liston. It remains one of the greatest sports photographs ever taken. The fight's status today, however, is belied in many ways by the humble circumstances of its original context. Postponed due to Ali's hernia surgery, it was then rescheduled in the small industrial Maine town of Lewiston — partially because it was the one of the few arenas procurable on short notice, but also because major venues were reluctant to be associated with Ali, who was increasingly seen as a draft dodger. The fight was sparsely attended: by most accounts only about 2500 of the roughly 4500 seats in the Lewiston high school hockey rink were filled that night. Thus surviving examples of this program are scarce. Prior to the bout, Ali had holed up at the Schine Inn in Chicopee, MA to train, talk to the media, and receive well-wishers. On May 20, 1965, five days before the fight, he hosted three fellow champions: the "Brown Bomber" Joe Louis, Jim Braddock, and Jersey Joe Walcott (who would also be the referee for the match), where all four of these signatures were gathered (the original owner noting as much above the signatures of Louis, Braddock, and Walcott). The program also reflects the confusion, controversy, and outright resistance surrounding Ali's recent name change. (At the start of the fight itself, the boxer was booed by the Lewiston crown when the ring announcer introduced him as "Muhammad Ali.") Ali is referred to throughout the program as both Cassius Clay and Muhammad Ali (and sometimes both at once). Ali had taken the name only the previous years after an address by Elijah Muhammad conferred him with the honorific (meaning "most high one worthy of praise"). This signature, therefore, represents one of the verifiably earliest "Muhammad Ali" autographs — and on the program (and at the training camp) for one of his most famous matches. A rare document, linking Ali not only to the great Black boxers who immediately preceded him, but capturing him at the very cusp of his popular transformation from heavyweight champion to civil rights leader, anti-war activist, and ultimately legendary humanitarian. A totemic object from the career of one of the 20th century's most famous, important, and influential figures.

An autograph diary page in the hand of Muhammad Ali, dated Thursday, April 17th, 1969, documenting arrangements for a confirmed appearance at Randolph-Macon College, Ashland, Virginia, during the height of his enforced exile from professional boxing.

Muhammad Ali (American).

Facsimile front cover of the original diary and portrait of Ali with his family included in display.

Framed and mounted.

The page, drawn from Ali’s personal 1969 diary, records in his distinctive hand a series of logistical notes relating to the engagement, including:

“Crenshaw Gymnasium”

“Randolph-Macon College / Ashland, Va”

“Dean Ira L. Andrews” (contact)

Telephone numbers for both office and residence

“Hotel Reservation / Hanover House” (circled for emphasis)

A prominently noted fee of “$1000”

This entry corresponds precisely to Ali’s documented appearance at Randolph-Macon College on April 17, 1969, one of the many speaking engagements he undertook while barred from boxing following his refusal of induction into the U.S. Army. During this period, Ali travelled extensively across American college campuses, delivering speeches that combined Nation of Islam doctrine, political commentary, and his own singular charisma, while simultaneously raising funds for his legal defense. Contemporary accounts confirm that Ali spoke at Randolph-Macon on this date, addressing students with a characteristically engaging and provocative style. The present page highlights the financial and travel arrangements underpinning his speaking tour. Such working documents, created in the moment and for immediate use, are exceedingly scarce. Unlike later signed material prepared for collectors, this diary page represents a connection to a verifiable event in one of the most consequential periods of Ali’s life. The inclusion of the speaking fee is of particular note, reflecting the economic framework through which Ali sustained himself during his years of professional exclusion, as well as the growing demand for his presence on American campuses amid the cultural and political upheavals of the late 1960s. An exceptional survival: a primary-source document linking Muhammad Ali directly to a documented public appearance during his exile years.
