Immediately, one sees that this is First Growth on the nose, with so much class and intensity. Here, the Cabernet Sauvignon has really given both flesh and volume. A real Arabica coffee taste. Château d'Yquem 1945 Sauternes, 1er Grand Cru Classé u. hs, label partially detached, soiled and badly damaged, capsule worn, corroded and soiled, château and vintage embossed cork visible; u. hs, étiquette partiellement détachée, sale et très abimée, capsule usée, corrodée et sale, Château et vintage visible sur le bouchon I have had this many times - don't ask! Huge sugar, high alcohol wine. It was the year of an extremely rare frost on 2 May. There were 6 'waves' of picking over 6 weeks, similar to 2005. Wonderful nose of the caramel crust of a crème brûlée and Seville oranges. Drink with a cream made with ground almonds. So multi-dimensional, deep and intense. The volatility varies with the bottles, but the majestic quality does not. Last tasted from magnum in 2007. Incredible Seville oranges bouquet. The most pure, figgy fruit of any 1945 I have had. Pomegranates. So much balance and fabulously complete and complex. Endless on the palate. On this showing, not 3 star, but 4 star. Belonging to a distinguished French aristocratic family, all bottles were sourced directly from the Chateaux and cellared in the underground vaulted cellar of the family castle ever since. The consistently high humidity of the cellar preserved corks and fill levels to perfection, though labels naturally suffered over time. In preparation for this auction, and in recognition of the collection’s prestigious and impeccable provenance, all bottles were shipped in refrigerated truck to Domaine Clarence Dillon in June 2025, where they were exceptionally reconditioned with new labels and repacked into new, pristine original wooden cases. La Mission cigars on the nose. So well-bred. Violets and aniseed. Intoxicating. Great cigary taste. Stunningly fruity and young. Like lace. Silky smooth. Another recent bottle had that classic cigar and fireplace bouquet that is so La Mission, but with so much elegance and breed, less assertive than the 1961 and 1966, more gentle, more fragrant. So sweet and gummy on the palate, with great finesse and unbelievable long, persistent flavour. Truffley finish. This is one of the greatest 'oeuvres' of Henri Woltner. My husband, David Peppercorn, says it is 'pure poetry' - and he is absolutely right (as usual!). The consistently high humidity of the cellar preserved corks and fill levels to perfection, though labels naturally suffered over time. In preparation for this auction, and in recognition of the collection’s prestigious and impeccable provenance, all bottles were shipped in refrigerated truck to Domaine Clarence Dillon in June 2025, where they were exceptionally reconditioned with new labels and repacked into new, pristine original wooden cases.
