[ALDINE] Aldus Manutius the Younger. De Quaesitis per. Epistolam Libri III. Venice, 1576 3 parts in one, 8vo (6 x 4 1/4 in.; 153 x 108 mm). Woodcut portrait vignette of Aldus the Elder on title, decorative woodcut initials. Contemporary vellum, arms of de Thou stamped in gilt on covers, edges gilt; moderate soiling and wear. Half green morocco gilt clamshell case; some fading to spine. An attractive copy of a scarce work, this being Jacques Auguste de Thou's copy with his armorial binding. De Thou (1553–1617) was a French historian, bibliophile, and president of the Parlement de Paris. Laid in the clamshell case, are two small medals commemorating de Thou as a bibliophile, issued 1861 by the Société des Bibliophiles François. [Aldus Manutius--Antoine-Augustin Renouard]. Printer's oval ornament (47 x 37 x 2 mm), metal, mounted on rectangular wooden block (50 x 40 x 18 mm), portrait head of Aldus Manutius surrounded by lettering “ALDVS.PIVS.MANVTIVS.R.”, used by Antoine-Augustin Renouard for the final edition of his Annales de l'imprimerie des Alde (Paris, 1834), p. 424 Antoine-Augustin Renouard (1765-1853) was a French bookseller and bibliographer, perhaps best known for his great works on the Aldine Press. This ornament, depicting the renowned Italian printer and humanist, Aldus Manutius (c. 1449/1452–1515), was used in the third and final edition of Renouard’s Annales, published in 1834.
