On the writer’s own letterhead and on British School of Archaeology in Iraq letterhead. Signed “Agatha” and “Agatha Mallowan.” In 1930 Agatha Christie, already famous, married the young archaeologist Max Mallowan. Despite her own work commitments, she decided to accompany him on expeditions to Syria and Iraq. Her friends, curious and sometimes worried, kept in touch with her during these travels. In Iraq, Agatha spent her time writing and helping to care for sick and unsupervised children in the Baghdad hospital. After returning to England, she continued her correspondence with Josephine and Ross from Winterbrook House, the small villa she had bought in 1934, asking after mutual friends, discussing azaleas, and not forgetting about Baghdad and Egypt. Archibald Ross Thomas, MBE, was a British cultural and educational figure in Iraq, best known as Director of the British Institute, Mosul. He also appears to have been an artist or printmaker, with surviving Northern Iraq prints attributed to him. His connection with Agatha Christie came through Iraq and the archaeological circle of Mallowan. Christie and Mallowan spent long periods in the Middle East connected with archaeological excavations, and Ross Thomas seems to have belonged to that same expatriate, cultural and archaeological world. Letter 1: Dear Josephine,Was it you who sent me a very lovely potted azalea of cherry colour a few days before Xmas?!It had a greeting card with “from Jocelyn & Rose” pinned on to it —And now I have got a friend called Jocelyn but not a very close oneShe’s never sent me flowers before — I thought Rose might be a sister, having just had a delightful Xmas card with drawings of Kurdish women from you + Ross — I never thought of it as coming from you.It was only just the other day when I was clearing up Xmas things & various cards from Iraq & Iran that it. Suddenly came to me “I believe that was from Josephine & Ross & the florist got it wrong“. If so accept very late thanks!!! If not, perhaps a long forgotten Jocelyn may turn up in my mind. How are you both? Best wishes for Easter — I’ve been on & off in health. Good spells & bad spells — This makes plans very difficult — Hope to get to Greenway — or perhaps to Wales where Mathew & Angela & my great granddaughters are now.EverLove from MaxYrsAgatha Letter 2: Dear Josephine,I’ve been away in Devon — Glad to have news of you —Yes, Mathew was married last May — a very nice girl whom he had known for some time —You must find a nice girl for Malcolm & force him into matrimony — He can’t be allowed to escape!!It’s a long time since we’ve seen Nick — I hope he’s all right again — It sounded as though he’d picked up something out East which baffled the doctors here —One feels rather sad about Baghdad & Mosul & all the happy times one remembers.David & Joan are off to Persia as usual & the Antiquities Dept are nice & helpful — but the whole climate of opinion in Iraq is depressing — what a period everybody fighting everybody we live in! Africa, & S.E. Asia, & Israel & the Arab nations & Egypt —And here we suffer from Governments who just spend money they haven’t got & go more or less bankrupt — Better than fighting, though —How lucky for Ross that he paints — nice to have something creative to do —All we need now is some SUN!!!Yrs,Agatha Letter 3: Dear RossThank you both so much for your kind congratulations & the nice things you say. We’re coming home early in March — One begins to feel we are rather like a certain kind of bird — always returning to its haunt on a definite date — First us, then the bee-eaters & then the Rollers!Best wishes for 1956Agatha Mallowan Letter 4: Dear JosephineWhat WONDERFUL eclairs!! We were rather hungry when we got back & made absolute PIGS of ourselves — simple fell upon them — We must have eaten about six each — It was nice of you —Come out & have lunch with us one day soon now (if?) the weather is settled.Barbara is, I believe, bringing in the policeman’s child on Monday — She will send a final messageJohn Burgess who is here now.The child seems to have had a complete mess made of her at the Hospital before a doctor called Abdul Hadi’s encasing her in plaster when her arm & hand were covered with boils). We do want her to have proper treatment — she’s a very sweet patient little girl.In haste many thanksYrsAgatha Mallowan

S. Whitehead of Cranbourne, Cheshire, Christie thanks him for his kind note regarding her work before politely declining his request: ‘I am sorry but I never send autographed photographs to anybody.’ The letter is signed boldly in blue ink ‘Agatha Christie’ above her typed name and comes with the original envelope. A first edition Christie title, and a characteristically direct signed letter, revealing the author’s long-standing reluctance to circulate signed photographs.

On Winterbrook House paper, with Winterbrook address crossed through and 48 Swan Court written overtop. A particularly humorous letter, as Christie has stated in other correspondence that she does not, on principle, sign photographs, calling into question whether Christie disposed of the snapshot herself. The Letter reads: Dear Mr Usborne, I feel most apologetic — but the photograph you sent me has simply vanished! I can’t think what has become of it — It is an extraordinary thing which has never happened to me before — namely, I didn’t cut it carefully —but I suppose it will look better touched up a bit? It makes me look a ripe 70 rather than still on this side of 60!However I don’t suppose people often like their own faces when reproduced! I am sorry abouthaving lost the photo. If it does turn up then will send it to you Yrs very sincerely,Agatha Mallowan

This compilation marks an early exploration of Poirot’s methodical and cerebral approach to solving mysteries, highlighting his use of "little grey cells" to unravel complex cases. The stories, including "The Adventure of the Western Star" and "The Tragedy at Marsdon Manor," showcase Poirot's deductive reasoning, often contrasting with the more action-oriented tendencies of his companion, Captain Hastings. Christie's narrative style in this collection emphasises psychological insight, misdirection, and meticulous plot construction, establishing key elements that would define her subsequent works in the detective fiction genre.
