XIXe siècle (lots 28 à 50) Wagner, Richard Lettre autographe signée [à Carolyne de Sayn-Wittgenstein]. Zürich 4 septembre 1856. 2 pages in-8 (210 x 134 mm) sur un bifeuillet. Signée "Richard Wagner". En allemand. Très belle lettre à la compagne de son ami Franz Liszt, évoquant la Messe solennelle de ce dernier, créée quelques jours auparavant. Il attend avec impatience la venue de Liszt qu’il espère accompagné de la princesse, qualifiée de "Kapellmeisterin" [cheffe d'orchestre] et de la fille de cette dernière. "Toute ma vie, intérieure et extérieure, est devenue un tourbillon incessant autour du point central qu’est l’axe de cette prochaine rencontre. Par contre, je peux vous dire que pour qu’elle soit aussi belle que prévue, votre présence est nécessaire, la vôtre et celle de l’enfant. Liszt m’a donné bon espoir à ce sujet. Sinon, je ferai de la vie de Liszt un enfer. Soyez prête – je vous le demande" [traduction]. Il lui demande de lui faire parvenir à Zürich les partitions de L’Or du Rhin et de La Walkyrie restés à Weimar, évoquant la remise en question de ses négociations avec l’éditeur Härtel et sa quête d’un lieu calme pour travailler. Il espère qu’on lui proposera un asile paisible à Zurich "si l’on ne me propose pas un asile aux alentours d’Altenburg [domicile de Liszt et de la princesse, à Weimar]. Les partitions donc, ne doivent pas être envoyées à Leipzig, mais à moi, et Liszt et moi essayerons dès votre arrivée d’en tirer le meilleur. Le 31 août, j’étais à Gran et j’ai assisté à la Messe de Liszt : en avez-vous entendu du bien ? En-a-t-il été satisfait ?". L’année 1856 ne fut pas une année facile pour Wagner. En butte aux crises de jalousie de son épouse, il vit son équilibre financier compromis par le refus de la maison Breitkopf & Härtel de publier ses œuvres. Mais au printemps 1857, le riche négociant Otto Wesendonk – dont la jeune épouse Mathilde était devenue une amie proche du compositeur et qui lui inspira Tristan et Isolde – lui offrit de s’installer dans une petite maison surnommée L’Asile, proche de la luxueuse villa qu’il faisait construire aux alentours de Zurich. Sollicité par le cardinal Szitowski pour composer une œuvre pour l’inauguration de la basilique Saint-Adalbert à Esztergom [Gran pour les Allemands] en Hongrie, Lizst proposa une Messe sur laquelle il travaillait depuis plus d’un an : "elle a été davantage priée que composée", assurait-t-il à Wagner au début de 1855. La Missa solennis zur Einweihung der Basilika in Gran, dite "Messe d'Esztergom" ou "Messe de Gran" fut créée le dimanche 31 août 1856, en présence de l’empereur François-Joseph lui-même. Malgré sa grande amitié et sa grande admiration pour Franz Liszt, Wagner se montre ici peu disert à propos de la Messe à laquelle il venait d’assister. À l’époque, un certain nombre de critiques s’élevèrent contre cette œuvre accusée d’avoir été composée pour promouvoir la popularité de son auteur, mais aussi d’affaiblir la musique sacrée en y intégrant des éléments de la nouvelle école allemande. Cosima Wagner, quelques années plus tard, ne se montra pas plus tendre envers les œuvres liturgiques de son père, écrites, selon elle, dans l'unique but d'imiter le bourdonnement des prêtres. Elle écrit dans son Journal en 1872 : "Nous sommes attristés par le résultat de celui de Père, pour lequel la princesse Wittgenstein est sans nul doute à blâmer".

Wagner"), in French, to an unnamed correspondent thanking him on behalf of Wagner for his letter and the volume he has sent him, informing him that it is not up to her husband to allocate tickets for performances [for the first Bayreuth Festival], but noting that he might be able to obtain one from Madame Lucca, in which case Wagner would be greatly pleased and charmed to make his acquaintance ("...Pour ce qui est de l'entrée aux representations du mois d'Août il ne dépend pas de lui de vous l'accorder..."), 4 pages, 8vo (20.3 x 12.5cm), black borders, vertical and horizontal fold, Bayreuth, 29 March 1876 2) COSIMA WAGNER. Autograph letter signed ("DrRichardStrauss"), to Richard Specht about the writer and critic Hermann Bahr's views on Wagner, noting that, since acquiring a singer as a wife, he has been interested in opera and especially in Wagner, reporting that he has now discovered the fashion for anti-Wagnerism, as if such young, wretched Wagner rebels had never existed, stating that it is now perhaps time to rap him over the knuckles, also referring to Humperdinck, d'Albert, Meyerbeer and Lortzing, Pfitzner and Siegfried Wagner, and asking him to regard these views as confidential, adding that they can discuss them further in Vienna ("...Es wäre nun doch an der Zeit, dem guten Bahr ein bisschen auf die Finger zu klopfen..."), 2 pages, 8vo (18 x 11.5cm), on Strauss's printed stationery, Garmisch, 17 March 1912, in two separate halves, two small tears, one with paper loss; together with the torn front part of an envelope addressed by Strauss to Robert Lienau The first performances of the complete Ring were given at the first Bayreuth festival (13-17 August 1876). Giovannina Lucca had secured the rights to publish Wagner's operas in Italy and it is likely that the correspondent requesting tickets was Italian. The Wagners subsequently visited Italy during the months September to December, attending a production of Rienzi in Bologna on 5 December 1876 ("much better than in Vienna"). They had met Giovanni Sgambati, a former pupil of Liszt, in Rome only a few days previously. Wagner had recommended his works to his publisher Schott in Mainz. The letter by Strauss to the dramatist Richard Specht (1870-1932) concerns the views of his fellow Austrian, the writer and critic Hermann Bahr (1863-1934). Bayreuth and Wagner's Theatre, a joint publication by Bahr and his wife, appeared in the same year as Strauss's letter.

Rackham, Arthur — Richard Wagner "Hey! Come hither, And stop me this cranny!" original ink drawing, from Richard Wagner's Die Walküre, or The Rhinegold and the Valkyrie, 1910 Ink and wash illustration (to sight: 360 x 260 mm). Signed at lower right and dated 1910; very faint toning. Matted, glazed, and framed; not examined out of frame. "Hey! Come hither, And stop me this cranny!" — a striking Rackham image, inspired by Wagner's masterpiece. The present image appeared at page 64 in the first edition of The Rhinegold & the Valkyrie (London: William Heinemann, 1910). The work was an English translation of the first two operas of the German composer Richard Wanger. Together, Der Ring des Nibelungen, Der Ring des Nibelungen: Composition of the music, and Der Ring des Nibelungen: Composition of the poem, form Wagner's famed Ring Cycle, which influenced Tolkien and countless others. Richard Wagner Autograph letter signed (“Richard Wagner”), in French, to Count Colonna-Walewski, ABOUT TANNHÄUSER beginning by expressing from the depths of his heart the gratitude he feels for the Emperor’s command to have the opera staged at the Opéra, thanking also the management and performers for their support, explaining that he has become convinced that the orchestral director lacks the necessary experience for the difficult task of conducting his opera, citing the conductor’s lack of memory and inability to maintain the indicated tempos, stating that the singers feel unsupported and that he fears a mediocre performance of a work which, as he admits, makes no concession to the ordinary taste, informing him that he has stepped back from assisting at rehearsals, and noting that the conductor has refused to allow him to take over control of the orchestra; in the final part of the letter the composer notes the grave difficulties a solution of the current situation presents to him, adding that ordinarily he would withdraw his work, but being aware of the distinguished favour bestowed on him he would not dare request the authorization to do so without having exhausted all means of reconciliation …Depuis que je lui ai retiré mon assistance immediate et que j’ai quitté la scène pour me placer dans la salle j’ai pu constater à chaque instant l’incapacité, le manque de mémoire, l’impuissance à maintenir le movement indiqué; mes chanteurs sont abandonnés, ils ne se sentent plus soutenus. It was the rule of the Paris Opéra that the official conductor of that institution - then Pierre-Louis Dietsch (1808-1865) – should conduct every new work performed there. Dietsch’s shortcomings however as a conductor, ever more manifest in the final rehearsals of the much-rehearsed opera, convinced Wagner that he must be allowed to take the final rehearsal and conduct the first three performances. Following Dietsch’s refusal to accede to such a demand, the composer appealed over his head – in the present letter - to the French Minister of State Alexandre Florian Joseph, Count Colonna-Walewski (1810-1868). When the minister refused to intervene, Wagner decided to withdraw his score, a move which Walewski also refused to countenance. When a final appeal to the Emperor along the same lines also met with a refusal, Wagner decided to let matters run their unfortunate course, so setting the stage for one of the most notorious opera débâcles in the history of music. Had Tappert's article appeared in Wagner's 'house' journal Bayereuther Blätter, this might have caused a public quarrel with the Berlin Court Opera Intendant, Botho von Hülsen, of whom Tappert was evidently critical. By requesting him to withdraw his article, on the grounds that the Bayreuther Blätter should remain a forum only for idealist concerns, Wagner ingeniously turns down his friend and avoids a potentially harmful spat with a powerful opera administrator. A possible candidate for the addressee of the letter of 15 September 1862 is the Leipzig lawyer Friedrich Albert Steche, who acted as a go-between in Wagner's dealings with the Leipzig theatre direction. Wagner adresse à un tailleur milanais, Gaetano Ghezzi, une liste "jolies choses" qu’il aimerait commander pour les offrir à Cosima pour Noël. Sa femme étant confinée à la maison tout l'hiver et privée de relations sociales, il lui demande de chercher "quelque chose de gracieux" à porter à la maison le soir : "par exemple une jaquette ou pareille chose, riche, même un peu extravagante, pour faire son effet quand cela est étalé en cadeau, des parfumeries etc. enfin de gracieusetés." Les cadeaux doivent arriver à Bayreuth le 20 décembre. Lettre inédite, dont n’est connu qu’un résumé publié dans le Sämtliche Briefe, d’après un catalogue de marchand de 1928. Dans son journal du 24 décembre, Cosima a noté : "A 17h30, distribution de cadeaux ; à moi aussi, R offre de beaux cadeaux, de magnifiques Chaillo[n] choses à porter à l'intérieur, et il est heureux qu'elles me conviennent et me plaisent" (dont une "jacquette turque"). Charlotte Chaillon était une couturière qui dirigeait son entreprise à Milan avec son mari Gaetano Ghezzi. UNPUBLISHED. Only a summary of the letter appears in the Sämtliche Briefe, based on a 1928 dealer's catalogue.  In her diary entry for 24 December,  Cosima recorded: "At 5:30pm, distribution of presents; to me, too, R gives lovely gifts, some splendid Chaillo[n] things to wear indoors, and he is pleased that they suit me and please me" (including a "jacquette turque").   Charlotte Chaillon was a dressmaker who ran her business in Milan with her husband Gaetano Ghezzi .  A subsequent request to Ghezzi in January 1874 for many more luxurious silk and satin dresses and underwear (which Cosima does not mention) has led to speculation that they were for himself to wear. Wagner lui envoie une copie du morceau qu'il avait écrit pour lui [Der Tannenbaum], qu’il ne considère pas comme la pire de ses œuvres et qui annonce déjà ses œuvres ultérieures. Il lui demande de se charger des traductions, précisant qu'il n'a plus rien à ajouter, tout comme pour les chansons de Paris "...hier ist das Lied, von dem ich Ihnen schrieb ; es ist nicht meine Schlechtestes, und ich glaube, kennen werden in diesen früheren Compositionen einen bedeutenden Bezug zu späteren Ausbildungen auffinden...".Fürstner venait de rééditer trois des chansons parisiennes de 1839 mentionnées par Wagner : Dors mon enfant, Attente et Mignonne (WWV 53, 55 et 57). Wagner composa Der Tannenbaum WWV 50 à Riga en 1838. The unnamed recipient is the publisher Adolf Fürstner in Berlin, whom Wagner sends a copy of the song he had written to him about [Der Tannenbaum], which he considers not the worst of his songs and one that already contains clear anticipations of developments in his later works, asking the publisher to attend to the translations, explaining that he has nothing more to add, as with those of the Paris songs ("...hier ist das Lied, von dem ich Ihnen schrieb; es ist nicht meine Schlechtestes, und ich glaube, kennen werden in diesen früheren Compositionen einen bedeutenden Bezug zu späteren Ausbildungen auffinden..."). Wagner composed Der Tannenbaum WWV 50 in Riga in 1838. His autograph manuscript does not survive complete, but the song was published in the journal Europa in 1839.  The copyist manuscript originally enclosed with this letter, used by Fürstner for the edition published in August 1871, was sold at Sotheby's on 12 May 1970, lot 519.  Fürstner had recently republished three of the 1839 Paris songs that Wagner mentions: Dors mon enfant, Attente, and Mignonne (WWV 53, 55 & 57). Cosima Wagner wrote in her diary for 10 June 1871, "R. received from Fürstner (publisher in Berlin) 500 francs for "Der Tannenbaum", which amuses him greatly", later quoting him: "I remember that in my early Paris days, I was always being told about Demoiselle Loïsa Paget, who received 500 francs for each of her songs--now in my 59th year I have also achieved that" (for Loïsa Puget, see lot 168) Provenance : J.A. The tenor was Ludwig Schnorr von Carolsfeld, who had created the title role in Tristan und Isolde, but who died tragically only nine days after the Mastersingers concert.  Victor Tissot's "sonnet", which is preserved at Bayreuth, reads: "Wagner, ton oeuvre est belle; en sortant de l'ornière/ Tu marches d'un pas sûr conquérir l'Avenir. / A cru sur ton coursier, le bras à sa crinière, / Ne lui mets pas de bride et laisse le bondir."  Provenance : Acquired at Hotel Drouot, Paris, Castaing sale, 19 June 1987, Lot 81. Minna ayant laissé entendre que Wagner avait une relation avec l'épouse d'Émile Ollivier, Wagner se dit être persuadé que Minna n'est "pas coupable de ce dont il l'accuse". Il estime qu'il vaut mieux oublier cette affaire et juge "inopportun et inutile d'entrer dans de plus amples explications sur ce sujet". "Je vous confie à votre sentiment de justice d'apprécier s'il serait bien fait de votre part d'adoucir en quelque sorte l'impression produite par votre rigueur sur ma femme qui se sait innocente et qui a le droit de me rappeler que je suis son mari." Il souhaite que cette discussion n'entache pas leurs relations. Éminent avocat et futur premier ministre, Émile Ollivier (1825-1913) avait épousé, en 1857, Blandine, la fille de Franz Liszt et de Marie d'Agoult. Bien que Wagner fût presque séparé de sa première épouse Minna, celle-ci l'accompagnait encore à Paris en 1860-1861. Ils ne divorcèrent jamais, Wagner ne se remaria qu'après la mort de Minna en 1866. Toutefois, Minna avait toujours l’impression de ne pas être à sa place à Paris et, constamment jalouse, le soupçonnait d'entretenir une relation avec la charmante Blandine Ollivier. Émile Ollivier (1825-1913) was a prominent lawyer, later Prime Minister, who had married Blandine, the daughter of Franz Liszt, in 1857.  Although Wagner had by now mostly separated from his first wife Minna, she still accompanied him to Paris in 1860-1861; they never divorced and Wagner remarried only after her death in 1866. However, Minna felt out of place in Paris and, perpetually jealous of any woman there, suspected that Wagner was in a relationship with the charming Blandine Ollivier, who, she complained, was always visiting him and for whom she was "possessed by a compulsive hatred" (Newman, volume 3, 174). Nevertheless, Wagner is adept at claiming the high moral ground in this letter. Les mésaventures de la création de Tristan et Iseult à Vienne. Wagner, espérant voir jouer son opéra à la fin de l'année, s’impatiente et vitupère contre les embûches qui retardent la première. Après de très nombreuses répétitions à Vienne, de 1862 à 1864, le projet sera abandonné. L’opéra sera finalement créé au Théâtre Royal de la cour de Munich le 10 juin 1865. "Je voulais vous écrire car pensez bien que votre assistance à la première représentation du Tristan est pour moi un point très important de ma vie ! Eh bien ! cette représentation, dieu sait quand elle aura lieu ! Je vous dis tout avec cela ! --depuis le mois de juin mon ténor Ander est attaqué d’un enrhumement qui lui avait enlevé entièrement sa voix. J’attends de semaine en semaine son rétablissement [...] Il va mieux […] et nous espérons avec assurance de pouvoir commencer de mettre sérieusement en étude mon ouvrage dès le 1er octobre prochain. Nous comptons maintenant pour le Tristan à la fin de novembre ou premiers jours de décembre. Voilà de mes tristes nouvelles ! […] Mon seul soutien c’est Iseult [la soprano Louise Dustmann] qui sait déjà presque tout son rôle […] C’est elle et l’orchestre sur lesquels je compte le plus […] Par l’indisposition du 1er ténor Lohengrin et Tannhauser sont également impossibles maintenant ; mais on donne souvent le Vaisseau fantôme". Wagner poursuit en évoquant ses affaires à Paris, où il s’était rendu pour mettre en scène la version révisée de Tannhäuser à l'Opéra en mars 1861. Il avoue son attachement à la capitale française : "en pensant à Paris, j’en sens un certain mal de patrie. C’est vraiment singulier ! Il paraît que ce sont mes souffrances infinies qui m’ont marié à cette ville […] Dans l’Allemagne, je ne saurais pas encore où placer ma tente, et où coucher ma tête. Wagner had gone to Paris to stage the revised version of Tannhäuser at the Opéra in March 1861, but the production ended in a débacle and was withdrawn after only three performances. He composed Tristan und Isolde, one of his greatest works, in 1859-1859 and worked tirelessly to get it staged in Vienna during 1861-1863, including making many alterations and cuts for the tenor Alois Ander, but they came to nothing.  The opera was only staged complete in Munich in 1865, although the Prelude had been performed at the Théâtre-Italien in 1860. Léon Carvalho (1825-1897), depuis peu directeur du Théâtre Lyrique et en quête d’opéras nouveaux, avait fait signe à Wagner qu’il admirait. Arrivé à Paris en septembre 1859, Wagner lui écrit afin de préparer cet entretien capital au sujet des représentations de Tannhäuser à Paris. Il se montre d’une extrême prudence, sachant que ce projet se heurtait à de nombreuses résistances. Les inquiétudes de Wagner étaient justifiées : Tannhäuser ne sera représenté que deux ans plus tard, en mars 1861, à l’Opéra de Paris. Et malgré de puissantes protections tombera, on le sait, sous les huées. Bien flatté de l’espoir de vous voir que vous m’avez donné il y a quelques temps ; permettez-moi de vous faire une observation, qui servira — d’après mon idée — à préciser et faciliter notre entretien projeté […] Ainsi croyez-vous, en quelque regard que ce soit, que ce projet se puisse opposer à vos intérêts, dites-le-moi franchement, et je m’abstiendrai complètement de toute tentative de persuasion ou d’influence quelconque. S’il y en est le contraire, et si votre intérêt s’unit au mien, de manière à être parfaitement libre de tout regard, et seulement désireux de voir aplanies les difficultés qui, à votre avis, s’opposent à la possibilité de l’exécution de notre affaire, alors — discutons des difficultés. Exilé en Suisse, en raison de sa participation à la révolution de Dresde en 1849, Wagner travaillait alors en solitaire à sa Tétralogie. Confiant et plein d’espoir, il écrit à Berlioz, rencontré lors de son long séjour à Paris, s’adressant à lui comme à un aîné et à un maître. Quel malheur pour moi que vous ne compreniez pas l’allemand. Par cette seule circonstance, je sens que je resterai toujours étranger pour vous, c’est-à-dire que vous ne me connaîtrez jamais si intimement, comme je le désire, pour être heureux dans votre embrasement. Certes je ne vante pas mon terrible Français [sic] ; pourtant il me permet de goûter vos expectorations littéraires […] je n’en ai pas du tout besoin pour connaître votre musique, pendant que vous ne connaîtrez jamais même ma musique en ignorant la langue, dans laquelle des desseins poétiques sont conçus, dont ma musique n’est que l’illustration colorée. Comme le contraire, c’est-à-dire : l’échangement [sic] de nos positions serait heureux ! Maintenant, que faire ? [...] j’userai bien de l’avantage que j’ai sur vous, et je m’occuperai autant plus de vous, qu’il vous est défendu de ne pas vous occuper de moi : avec cela j’aurai l’autre avantage, de ne pas vous faire apercevoir [sic] trop clairement mon infériorité [...] Au fait ! Envoyez-moi vos partitions imprimées : j’ai le plus vive [sic] désir de les étudier note par note.... Mais, regardez cela comme une affaire sérieuse pour moi ! J’aurai votre réponse, n’est-ce pas ? Il évoque ensuite les Soirées de l’orchestre, recueil d’articles de Berlioz que celui-ci lui avait envoyé et dont il fait un grand éloge : Je les ai lues pendant un séjour aux Alpes, à 2000 pieds au-dessus du lac des 4 cantons. En même temps je travaillais à l’écriture d’une nouvelle partition ; dans les intervalles d’une page à l’autre, je prenais votre livre et trop souvent j’oubliais parfaitement de continuer mon travail, quoique l’écriture avait déjà longtemps séché. O, que de fois étais-je si près de vous, pour toucher votre main ! [...] Pourtant vous avez tort de mettre en doute ce que Beethoven ne savait pas garder la mesure en — dansant les danses odieuses de nos bals : au contraire, j’y crois de bonne foi, et je crois aussi que la mesure de ses symphonies est très différente de la mesure gardée par les danseurs de nos contredanses [...] Liszt viendra me voir au mois de décembre : il me jouera ses nouvelles partitions, et nous jouerons et chanterons les miennes. Auriez-vous envie d’être le troisième à ce rendez-vous ? Aussi je pense à vous faire avoir un jour un orchestre assez bon, pour diriger une de vos symphonies, peut-être au printemps. Devant rejoindre Wiesbaden le 1er août, il craint de ne pouvoir être, comme prévu, à Berlin pour diriger Tannhäuser — sa présence étant absolument nécessaire. Il déclare clairement que si Schöneck est absent pour diriger l'opéra, il n'autorisera pas la représentation. Précisant qu’il ne cherche pas à entraver sa carrière ni à semer de confusion, Wagner le prie instamment de confirmer par écrit sa position concernant Wiesbaden et Berlin. Il confie avoir appris de Grabowski qu'il est peu probable qu'il soit nommé à Wiesbaden. Bester Freund, wie soll es aber dann mit dem Tannhäuser in Berlin werden? Wenn Sie nicht mit nach Berlin gehen, erlaube ich keinesfalls diese Aufführung. Wie soll das aber werden? 4 pages in-8 (210 x 137 mm) sur un bifeuillet, sous chemise demi-maroquin rouge moderne. Lettre inédite évoquant Liszt à Weimar et les nominations de musiciens de cour en Allemagne. Rudolf Schöneck, à la recherche d’une place de chef d’orchestre, avait entendu dire que Liszt allait quitter son poste à Weimar. Il avait alors sollicité l’aide de Wagner qui lui répond un peu tardivement. Il l’informe que Liszt ne lui a rien dit de son éventuel départ et qu’il attend de ses nouvelles. Il commente ensuite la manière dont les cours allemandes nomment les directeurs musicaux : ignorant les capacités de chefs d’orchestre et offrant les postes à des compositeurs ou à des virtuoses célèbres incapables de diriger une seule mesure (comme lorsque Chelard a remplacé Hummel à Weimar). Wagner juge préférable que Liszt reste à Weimar, car il serait en mesure de nommer des personnes talentueuses. En revanche, le départ de Liszt indiquerait que l’arrière garde l’a forcé à partir. Il lui promet de soutenir sa candidature tout en le prévenant que les chances sont minimes. En post-scriptum, il lui demande de récupérer un mauvais autoportrait, car il en recevra bientôt un bien meilleur. Grade in Weimar verfuhr man hieher auch so, wo man nach Hummels Tode Chelard anstellte, der sich damals durch seinen Macbeth dann durch Empfehlungen des Bayerischen Hofes und als—Franzos—einen Namen gemacht hatte, trotzdem er buchstäblich nicht einen Takt dirigiren konnte. Wagner a correspondu avec Rudolf Schöneck en novembre 1852 au sujet d’une représentation prévue de Tannhäuser à Fribourg-en-Brisgau, où il était alors directeur musical. Cependant, Schöneck était évidemment en train de faire avancer sa carrière ailleurs et il avait demandé lui-même s’il pouvait être nommé à cet endroit. Longue lettre de jeunesse évoquant ses débuts, à quelques mois de la création de Rienzi à Dresde. Elle est écrite de Berlin, quelques jours seulement après son retour de Paris, où Wagner avait mené, durant trois années, une existence précaire. Rentré en Allemagne, le jeune compositeur est plein d’espoir, le théâtre de Dresde venant d’accepter son opéra Rienzi, qui y sera bientôt représenté. Wagner a 29 ans, sa carrière débute et il connaîtra bientôt ses premiers succès. Il donne ici de ses nouvelles à quatre amis allemands, laissés à Paris, à qui il s’adresse tour à tour, avec volubilité et chaleur. Il les prie de bien vouloir s’occuper de l’éditeur Maurice Schlesinger. Wagner s’interroge au sujet de la publication, dans la Gazette musicale, de la dernière partie de son article sur l’opéra La Reine de Chypre de Halévy, dont il avait arrangé la partition pour piano et voix. Il décrit son inutile et ennuyeux séjour à Berlin, relate deux rencontres avec Meyerbeer et des discussions à Dresde sur la mise en scène de Rienzi. Wagner leur confie combien leur présence lui manque et qu’il pense souvent à eux. Puis il explique que son épouse Minna, qui aimerait beaucoup les rencontrer, est à Leipzig. Il essaie désespérément de gagner assez d’argent pour l’emmener à Berlin et pour rembourser les dettes qu’il a laissées à ses amis à Paris. Il leur donne son adresse à Dresde, où il espère mettre en scène son opéra Rienzi. Wagner composa Rienzi entre 1838 et 1840. Joué pour la première fois le 20 octobre 1842 au Königliches Hoftheater de Dresde, cet opéra fut le premier grand succès du compositeur. J’ai également quitté ma femme : elle pleurait et voulait aller à Paris, mourir de faim. Je vis mes parents à Leipzig. Ils habitaient de nouvelles maisons et de nouvelles rues ; ils avaient de grands enfants et je me tenais comme un gros âne parmi eux. Ce furent nos retrouvailles. Je suis donc allé à Berlin : merveilleux ! […] J’ai parlé à Meyerbeer pendant 5 minutes ; aujourd’hui je lui parlerai pendant une heure entière […] A Dresde j’ai vu brièvement Fischer et Heine ; pour les autres, je demeurai incognito. Lorsque j’entrai chez Fischer et dis qui j’étais, il se jeta comme un fou à mon cou et m’embrassa : alors je me rendis compte que je suis quelqu’un de bien. Comme je me retrouvais dans la rue, j’en rêvais encore - de vous […] Dussé-je mourir sans vous revoir, je te promets, Anders, mes prochains tantièmes, toi Lehrs le Venusberg, et toi Lirtz mes deux chiens perdus à Paris. Tu sais très bien les promener dans la rue... Comment cela va-t-il au n° 14 de la rue Jacob ? Les gens “accrochants” se souviennent-ils de moi ? Il me semble que j’ai laissé des dettes derrière moi […] Console également Schlesinger s’il devait trop souffrir de notre séparation : mon article sur la Reine de Chypre [opéra d’Halévy, qu’il avait transcrit pour piano] n’a pas paru : il me semble qu’il était trop mauvais pour être imprimé même dans la “Gazette musicale”. Bêtise ! […] La moitié de ma vie en dépend, car vous devez savoir qu’en dehors de ma femme, je n’aime que vous […] Votre lettre me réveillera probablement de ma tristesse.
