Marine Reptile Fossil (Ichthyosaur) — Juvenile Specimen Stenopterygius sp. Early Jurassic, Toarcian Stage (approx. 180 million years ago) Holzmaden, Germany Ichthyosaur fossil measures 33½ x 9¼ inches (85.1 x 23.5 cm), 39¼ x 17 inches (99.7 x 43.2 cm) in matrix. 50 pounds (22.7 kg). This mostly complete fossil skeleton belongs to an extinct marine reptile – Stenopterygius sp. It is preserved mostly in articulation in its original sedimentary rock. The skeleton is prepared with the right side exposed in very fine detail. Based on its overall size, disproportionately large skull, and bone development, this suggests that this specimen belonged to a juvenile. The skeleton shows loosely articulated bones due to the immaturity of the individual where articular surfaces have not fully formed or fused. The skull is preserved with bones articulated and teeth in their intact position. The eye bones (sclerotic) are also articulated within the orbit. The left lower jaw is positioned lower than the right. The bones of the front and back paddles, ribs and gastralia are visible.

Weight: 434 grams (13.96 Troy ounces). An exceptionally large mass of intergrown crystals, dominated by large Spinel-Law twinned crystals up to 2.4 centimeters long. The geology of the Round Mountain Mine yields very few matrix specimens. The present specimen has the added value of a small tab of rhyolitic tuff volcanic matrix on the reverse.

John Hunter. A natural history of the human teeth; A practical treatise on the diseases of the teeth, intended as a supplement to the natural history of those parts. London: for J. Johnson, 1771-1778 2 works in one volume, 4to (261 x 200mm.), 16 engraved plates, contemporary speckled calf, lacking both half-titles, upper cover and front flyleaf detached, lower joint weak, extremities rubbed FIRST EDITIONS. Hunter's treatise "was the first scientific study of the teeth and is basic to all modern dentistry" (Eimas). Hunter's collection of anatomical and natural history specimens was purchased in 1799 by the government for the Royal College of Surgeons. "The Figures were drawn by Mr Rymsdyk, under the Author's Direction, and engraved by Mess. Strange, Grignion, Ryland, and others" (preface). Jan van Rymsdyk, a Dutch anatomical artist active in London, also produced the drawings for Hunter's brother William's anatomical work on the human gravid uterus. TWO LABRADORITE SPECIMENS Madagascar Two elegantly rising specimens, polished on all sides, showing iridescence of turquoise and blues. Presented on minimalist bases. Labradorite was claimed to have been "discovered" by Moravian missionaries in 1770 in the Labrador region of Canada; in reality the feldspar mineral had long been known and is mentioned frequently in the legends of the Inuit people, who referred to it as a "fire stone," and were known to grind it into powder to treat a variety of ailments. According to Inuit lore, Labradorite fell from the frozen fire of the Aurora Borealis, and indeed this mysterious mineral is just as visually fascinating as the northern lights. Labradorite can appear opaque and colorless, however when the angle of view is changed, pearly and iridescent green, blue, turquoise, silver, and gold colors leap out, produced by the interference of light in the mineral structure.

A CRYSTALLINE GOLD SPECIMEN FROM THE WORLD'S PREMIER GOLD MINE Round Mountain Mine, Nye County, Nevada U.S.A. The present specimen exhibits a pleasing combination of undulatory gold leaves accented by cuboctahedral crystals as large as 3 mm. Overall measurements: 3.3 x 2.4 x 1.4 inches (8.3 x 6 x 3.5cm). Weight: 171.53 grams (5.51 Troy ounces) Starting in the mid 1990’s, Round Mountain was not only the most prolific producer of crystalline gold specimens, it also lays claim to some of the finest quality golds ever placed on the collector’s display shelf. Specimens from the mine are known for fine luster as well as exceptional and varied crystal habits. An impressive number of fine small pieces, and a limited number of larger specimens reached the market during a nearly 20 year span. Unfortunately, the mining company changed philosophy and mining methods, and the last specimen to be saved was almost 4 years ago. It is sad to think there will be no more great golds from the mine, but cessation insures collectible value and future growth.

A BLUE AMBER SPECIMEN Hymenaea protera Oligocene Indonesia 18 cm, presented in a custom, mahogany black-light box. . One side has been polished while the other side has been left in its original rough condition. A RARE SPECIMEN OF INDONESIAN BLUE AMBER. In artifical light, blue amber often displays the characteristic honey-gold hue found in most fossilized tree resins, however when exposed to either direct sunlight or lit with long-wave Ultra Violet (UV) light, the amber fluoresces with a brilliant blue color. Blue amber is only found in three locations in the world, with the largest deposit being in the Dominican Republic, followed by smaller deposits in Mexico and Indonesia. Produced by the relatively short-lived Hymenaea protera tree, it is thought that the blue color is caused by the presence of anthracene, the result of incomplete combustion in massive forest fires of the now-extinct tree.

A FINE FOSSIL CYCAD TRUNK Cycadeoidea Cretaceous 66 – 145 million years old Patagonia, Argentina Measuring 26 x 22 x 11 ½ inches (66 x 55.9 x 29.2 cm). Cycads are an ancient group of stout plants crowned with large compound leaves. Today only a handful of different species remain. Yet during the Jurassic Period, it is estimated that cycads comprised up to 20% of all flora – an astoundingly high percentage. While fossil cycad leaves have been found on every continent, fossil trunks are extremely rare. The present specimen is one of the largest and most complete fossil cycad trunks known. It was the first fossil cycad ever recovered with its main root and two broken branches; further, the articulation of its surface is superb displaying in fine detail the well-preserved diamond-like scales. CHINGA METEORITE — COMPLETE SPECIMEN Iron Nickel, ataxite Discovered in 1913 by gold prospectors Eastern Siberia, Russia, near the border with Tibet Measuring 4 ½ x 4 x 1 ½ inches (11.43 x 10.16 x 3.81 cm) and weighing 3 ibs. (1,350 grams). From a fall with limited specimens, this complete Chinga exhibits the small thumbprint-like depressions, known as regmaglypts, which were caused by burning and melting during the meteorite's descent through the atmosphere. Believed to have collided with the Earth approximately 15,000 years ago, meteorites from this fall were carved by the Tibetans into religious ornaments and deities, eliciting an infamous chapter in the Indiana Jones movies about one such statue. Chingas are a rare type of iron meteorite known as an ataxite. Ataxites have a very high nickel content (this meteorite contains 16% nickel), which explains its lustrous appearance. When cut and sliced, ataxites lack any visible crystal pattern but they do polish into a beautiful mirror like finish.

A STROMATOLITE SPECIMEN Morocco A gorgeous natural concretion of a deep red-orange, measuring 60 cm tall on a custom stand. Stromatolites are the oldest fossils on Earth, and bear witness to the emergence and evolution of biological life on our planet. Formed from cyanobacteria, their name derives from the Greek "stroma", meaning cushion or layer, due to the fact that they are formed by strata of unicellular organisms living in colonies. Most frequently, stromatolites are carbonate, but siliceous stromatolites can also be found. The fossil record of stromatolites is surprisingly large, spanning nearly four billion years of geological history, with living organisms that have lived in every imaginable environment to have existed on Earth.

CLASSIC GOLD IN QUARTZ SPECIMEN CALIFORNIA MOTHER LODE Specimen Gulch, Bullion/Whitlock District, Mariposa County, California, U.S.A. Overall measurements: 3.14 x 2.36 x 1.97 inches (8.0 x 6.0 x 5.0 cm). When one envisions natural gold specimens, it’s gold from the California Mother Lode that come to mind. Here is a large crown of bright yellow gold growing out of classic white quartz from the Southern portion of the famous Mother Lode. This is why the West was settled, and the only reason this specimen was discovered recently is because of fire. A forest fire burned off the thick brush allowing intrepid access with a metal detector.

The voyage made significant visits to Western Australia and Tasmania as well as to Sydney, and took back to France an important collection of natural history specimens. The atlas contains fine, and often coloured, illustrations of coastal profiles, natives, natural history, views, etc.

Woodcut coat of arms at top, letterpress text in numerous fonts, printed recto and verso, text on verso within decorative border; old folds, minor browning, a few stray spots. Matted, framed, and glazed with Plexiglas; not examined out of frame. "Birds, Beasts, Insects, &c. Bought, Sold, or Exchanged" The original Leverian collection was assembled by Ashton Lever, and was noted for the content it acquired from the voyages of Captain James Cook. It remained on display from 1775 until 1806, when it was broken up at auction. Mr. Seaman (or John Simpson Seaman) was a member of a Sussex family that produced four "professional" naturalists. His father was an Ipswich-based taxidermist, and a dealer in natural history specimens. Seaman established a travelling museum that toured country fairs, often alongside Wombwell's Menagerie. The collection was frequently referred to as the "Leverian Museum," though it's probable that the Seaman family only acquired a small portion of that collection when it was sold in London in 1806. A masterpiece of Natural History of the Americas The second and much enlarged German/Latin edition of Catesby's landmark work on the fishes, reptiles, insects and plants of the New World. A rare edition, one especially so in this condition. "Catesby's 'Natural History' is the most famous colorplate book of American plants and animal life" (Hunt 486). "Mark Catesby, born 24 March 1682, after studying natural science in London, made two sojourns in America, 1712-19 and 1722-26? He resided in Virginia and traveled; sent back seeds; and carried back specimens that impressed Sir Hans Sloane and Dr William Sherard. The second time, he arrived in Charleston in May 1722; travelled in Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and the Bahamas, seeking materials for his projected 'Natural History'; sent back specimens. Back in London, he devoted himself to the preparation of the book. As he could not afford artists and engravers, and trusted none but himself, he studied etching under Joshua Goupy and did the work himself" (Hunt p. 143). Edward Donovan The Natural History of British Quadrupeds. London: for the author, 1820 FIRST EDITION, 8vo (146 x 149mm.), 72 hand-coloured engraved plates, original boards, preserved in brown morocco collector's clamshell box, spine gilt, occasional light spotting, slight wear and marks to boards Edward Donovan was a prolific naturalist whose works on entomology established his reputation. He was an avid collector of natural history specimens, eventually opening a museum to house and exhibit his examples of birds, mammals, reptiles, fish and botanical specimens. This work intended to present all the known quadrupeds in the British Isles, both wild and domesticated, in the Linnean manner. Donovan fell on financial hard times and was forced to sell his natural history collection in 1818, which was the source of much of the content in his publications. He died penniless in 1837. Edward Donovan (1768–1837) was an Anglo-Irish writer, illustrator, and amateur zoologist. Donovan sadly died impoverished leaving a large family destitute. The Natural History of British Birds was issued as a monthly serial in fifty parts. Brückmann, Franz Ernst Epistola Itineraria L. Memorabilia Musei Lesseriani. Wolfenbüttel: n.p., 1735 4to (212 x 164 mm). 16 pages, two engraved plates, one of which folding; some pale spotting. Modern marbled boards. The plates depict specimens from the collection of Friedrich Christian Lesser of Nordhausen in Prussia. Brückmann (1697-1753) was a practicing physician at Braunschweig and Wolfenbüttel and an avid devotee of natural history subjects. Three separate Centuria of letters were published, with each “epistola” issued separately. Complete sets are understandably scarce. This work describes Lesser’s most important natural history objects: minerals, zoological specimens, and plants.

HMS Challenger embarked from Portsmouth on 21 December 1872 under the direction of the Scottish professor Charles Wyville Thomson and his Canadian-born assistant and naturalist John Murray. This was the first time that physicists, chemists and biologists collaborated with expert navigators to map the sea. During the four-year voyage they circumnavigated the globe, travelling 69,0000 nautical miles across the Atlantic, Pacific and Antarctic oceans. They sounded the ocean bottom to a depth of 26,850 feet, discovered 715 new genera and 4,717 new species of ocean life forms, including many deep-sea specimens. Among their discoveries were many of the fish and marine creatures thought at that time to be of legend. The Challenger collection is one of the largest in London's Natural History Museum, where numerous specimens remain on display. HMS Challenger was a three-masted square-rigged wooden corvette and the first vessel specifically equipped for general oceanographic research. All but two of her seventeen guns had been removed to make way for purpose-built scientific laboratories and workrooms. Storage space for all the trawls and dredges was also necessary, together with space for the anticipated sample collection. The expedition’s mission was to gather detailed and consistent observations of various oceanographic phenomena across as much of the ocean as possible. Over the course of their voyage the ship stopped and collected data and samples at 362 stations scattered over 14 million square miles of ocean floor. Much of what was discovered about world ocean biogeography for the next seventy-five years stemmed from analyses of collections made on this journey. This fifty volume, 29,500-page report took twenty-three years to compile and publish. It includes many observations of other natural history subjects including faunae of the countries visited. The following is a selection of some of the papers included in the volumes: Birds, by P.L. Sclater, with 30 hand-coloured plates; Bones of Cetacea, by W. Turner, with 3 plates; Collections of Eggs described by P.L. Sclater; Essay on the Green Turtle by W.K. Parker, with 13 plates; Essay on Shore Fishes, with 32 plates and Deep Sea Fishes, with 73 plates, both by A. Gunther; Deep-Sea Fauna of New Zealand, by A. Hamilton. C. Wyville Thomson led the expedition but died of exhaustion from the journey; the preparation of the reports had to be supervised by Sir John Murray. Contemporary Russian red morocco, gilt leaf border on sides, small floral ornaments in the corners; slightest wear to extremities, a fine copy. In a later marbled slipcase. First edition. The St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences, founded in 1724 by Peter the Great, drew its early holdings from the libraries of Areskinov, Pitkernova, and Binius, with most volumes in German or English. This guide was prepared by the under-librarian Bacmeister, likely a brother of H. L. C. Bacmeister; both were German scholars working in Russia. In 1738, an Imperial decree brought the Liderov medal collection from Hamburg into the institution. The Kunstkammer itself held notable natural-history specimens from the famed Seba and Ruysch collections—purchased by Peter during his travels in Holland—as well as globes and scientific instruments from Mikhail Lomonosov (who worked there from 1741 to 1765) and items from the czar’s own cabinet. A devastating fire in 1747 destroyed most of the original buildings, which were later rebuilt. Scarce: only two copies have appeared at auction in the past century. In this work, he describes various fossils and petrifications that he had discovered near Brussels, including some that were excavated via a hundred-foot-deep shaft. "Milbert sailed from Havre on the 1st of September, 1815, and arrived in New York on the 20th of the following October. He settled in New York, where his first work was the making of several drawings of the mechanism of steamboats. He soon, however, turned to portrait-painting, and taught drawing. Milbert was later attached to the commission in charge of the levelling preparatory to the establishment of the Champlain Canal. In this connection he made a journey in one of the large steamers plying upon the Hudson. It was on this voyage that he collected much of the material for his Itinéraire Pittoresque. A few years after his arrival in New York he was charged by M. Hyde de Neuville, the French Minister, with the preparation of certain collections of natural history specimens, destined for the King's Garden in Paris. In his report on this collection, which is printed in full in his Itinéraire Pittoresque, he styles himself 'Voyageur, Naturaliste du Gouvernement et Correspondant du Museum d'Histoire Naturelle au Jardin du Roi.' It was through Milbert's efforts that the first living specimen of the American buffalo was introduced into France. On pages 33-6 of the first volume of text is given a very interesting description of the architecture and interior arrangement of the private houses of New York at this period" (Stokes Iconography of New York). Most of the plates depict scenes in New York State, ranging from New York City, to West Point, Albany, Troy, Saratoga Springs and Niagara Falls. This set includes the rare 54th plate that is often lacking, as well as the finely colored folding map of the northeastern United States, covering the area west to Ohio and the Great Lakes, and south to Virginia, with a significant portion of Canada. It also includes an inset of the Hudson River region. There are also views of Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia. "As an artist, Milbert loved to paint American landscapes, particularly those which showed the Hudson, 'King of Rivers,' flowing majestically through the mountains ... boundless curiosity, plus a contagious enthusiasm and a delightful sense of humor, make the journal as lively a document today as when it was penned a hundred and forty years ago. The pictures of what he saw, as of the time he drew them, constitute a unique and valuable record" (Sherman). Charles Hose (1863-1929) went to Borneo in 1884 as a civil servant to work for Charles Brooke the Rajah of Sarawak, founder of the Sarawak Museum. Hose eventually became a member of the Supreme Council and a judge of the Supreme Court. When he retired he returned to Norfolk where he spent his days teaching about Sarawak and its peoples. He married Emilie (Poppy) Ellen in 1905 and they had two children. His most significant publication was The Pagan Tribes of Borneo. Hose was an enthusiastic photographer and the Sarawak Civil Service List states: "While in Sarawak [Hose] distinguished himself as a geographer, anthropologist and collector of natural history specimens. His numerous journeys in the Baram District, which he was the first Officer to explore thoroughly, brought him into contact with many interior tribes, who, through his influence, came under Sarawak control and made peace with Sarawak tribes". Robert Shelford (1872–1912), was a British entomologist and museum administrator, working as the Curator of the Sarawak Museum in Kuching. The album opens with a series of images taken in and around Kuching, the capital of Sarawak, however the majority of photographs show Dyak life and culture (including head-hunting), with ethnographic portraits, architectural views and cultural pursuits. Donovan fell on hard times and, in 1818, was forced to sell his natural history collection—the source of much of the content in his publications. The rare account of the Baudin-Freycinet expedition, one of the most important early explorations of Australia. The expedition was sent out by the French government in 1800 with orders to complete the cartographic survey of the Australian coast. Commanded by Nicolas Baudin, the expedition left France in 1800 and sailed via Mauritius to the Australian coast in the region of Cape Leeuwin, arriving in May 1801. Peron sailed as naturalist on the expedition and Freycinet as cartographer. The vessels, Geographe and Naturaliste, sailed north from Cape Leeuwin, surveying the coast and making observations on the natural history and inhabitants, until they crossed to Timor. After three months the two ships set out for Tasmania, continued making detailed surveys, and went on to Sydney. The group then undertook a complete survey of the southern coast and an examination of the northern coast before returning to Mauritius where, near the end of 1803, Baudin died. It was a celebrated voyage that brought back to France the most important collection of natural history specimens in the history of the French Museum, as well as a wealth of geographical and other information. The narrative of the expedition was begun by Peron, and completed by Freycinet after Peron's death. A tacit agreement between Peron and Freycinet, both of whom disliked Baudin, kept the commander's name mostly absent from the present official account of the expedition. Flinders completed his survey of the Australian coast before Baudin, but his imprisonment by the French in Mauritius for seven years resulted in the French exploration account being published first. Consequently, the Baudin-Freycinet narrative includes the first complete and fully detailed map of the Australian continent. It is justly one of the most famous depictions of Australia ever produced, with virtually the entire southern coast labeled "Terre Napolean," indicating possible French colonial ambitions. The Atlas contains a group of beautiful color plates, mostly of natural history specimens, many of which depict what the French saw during their important visit to Tasmania. Punt, and J. van der Speyk, very occasional minor browning An extraordinary copy of an extraordinary record of an extraordinary collection—a Wunderkammer (“Cabinet of Wonders”) of natural history specimens from around the globe—featuring striking large folio engravings. Albert Seba (1665-1736), was an Amsterdam apothecary who accumulated wealth and cultivated useful connections through his work for the Dutch East India Company, which at the time controlled the most extensive trade network in the world. Seba treated the illnesses and injuries of East India Company sailors and colonial administrators who landed in Amsterdam after voyages to far-flung Dutch colonies, and he solicited their aid in acquiring samples of foreign flora and fauna that might be of use to him in formulating medicines. The first collection he built with their help sold in 1717 for the fabulous sum of 15,000 guilders to one of his clients, Tsar Peter the Great of Russia. An obsessive collector, he immediately began assembling a second, more spectacular cabinet. It included specimens of mammals, birds, plants, insects (including butterflies), reptiles, amphibians, fish, crustaceans, shells, minerals, and fossils from Asia, Africa, the Americas, and remote islands from Greenland to the South Pacific. His collection was so renowned that it attracted visitors as distinguished as Carl Linnaeus, the father of modern taxonomy, who found its contents useful in establishing his classification system of plant and animal life. (Linnaeus did, however, denounce the many-headed hydra pictured in this work as a fraud.) Interest from scientists, artists, and dignitaries led to Seba’s decision to produce an illustrated catalogue of his collection. The engravings are memorable, both for the detail of the specimens depicted and for their artful, imaginative composition. After Seba’s death in 1736, work continued on volumes III (fish and other marine life) and IV (insects, minerals, and fossils). To finance publication of the two final volumes, it was necessary to auction off Seba’s collection in 1752; many of the specimens found homes in European museums, where they remain today. HMS Challenger embarked from Portsmouth on 21 December 1872 under the direction of the Scottish professor Charles Wyville Thomson and his Canadian-born assistant and naturalist John Murray. This was the first time that physicists, chemists and biologists collaborated with expert navigators to map the sea. During the four-year voyage they circumnavigated the globe, travelling 69,0000 nautical miles across the Atlantic, Pacific and Antarctic oceans. They sounded the ocean bottom to a depth of 26,850 feet, discovered 715 new genera and 4,717 new species of ocean life forms, including many deep-sea specimens. Among their discoveries were many of the fish and marine creatures thought at that time to be of legend. The Challenger collection is one of the largest in London's Natural History Museum, where numerous specimens remain on display. HMS Challenger was a three-masted square-rigged wooden corvette and the first vessel specifically equipped for general oceanographic research. All but two of her seventeen guns had been removed to make way for purpose-built scientific laboratories and workrooms. Storage space for all the trawls and dredges was also necessary, together with space for the anticipated sample collection. The expedition’s mission was to gather detailed and consistent observations of various oceanographic phenomena across as much of the ocean as possible. Over the course of their voyage the ship stopped and collected data and samples at 362 stations scattered over 14 million square miles of ocean floor. Much of what was discovered about world ocean biogeography for the next seventy-five years stemmed from analyses of collections made on this journey. This fifty volume, 29,500-page report took twenty-three years to compile and publish. It includes many observations of other natural history subjects including faunae of the countries visited. Wyville Thomson led the expedition but died of exhaustion from the journey; the preparation of the reports had to be supervised by Sir John Murray. Numerous parts were published later as extracts from the original edition. a desirable set of this monument to seafaring naturalists, now difficult to obtain complete. First edition of an outstanding series of American views — the scarce India Paper issue of the plates ﻿"Milbert sailed from Havre on the 1st of September, 1815, and arrived in New York on the 20th of the following October. He settled in New York, where his first work was the making of several drawings of the mechanism of steamboats. He soon, however, turned to portrait-painting, and taught drawing. Milbert was later attached to the commission in charge of the leveling preparatory to the establishment of the Champlain Canal. In this connection he made a journey in one of the large steamers plying upon the Hudson. It was on this voyage that he collected much of the material for his Itinéraire Pittoresque. A few years after his arrival in New York he was charged by M. Hyde de Neuville, the French Minister, with the preparation of certain collections of natural history specimens, destined for the King's Garden in Paris. In his report on this collection, which is printed in full in his Itinéraire Pittoresque, he styles himself 'Voyageur, Naturaliste du Gouvernement et Correspondant du Museum d'Histoire Naturelle au Jardin du Roi.' It was through Milbert's efforts that the first living specimen of the American buffalo was introduced into France. On pages 33-6 of the first volume of text is given a very interesting description of the architecture and interior arrangement of the private houses of New York at this period" (Stokes Iconography of New York) Most of the plates depict scenes in New York State, including New York City, West Point, Albany, Troy, Saratoga Springs and Niagara Falls. This set includes the rare 54th plate that is often lacking, as well as the fine colored folding map of the northeastern United States. The area covered goes west to Ohio and the Great Lakes, and south to Virginia, with a significant portion of Canada, also included is an inset of the Hudson River region. Fine views are included as well of Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia. "As an artist, Milbert loved to paint American landscapes, particularly those which showed the Hudson, 'King of Rivers,' flowing majestically through the mountains...boundless curiosity, plus a contagious enthusiasm and a delightful sense of humor, make the journal as lively a document today as when it was penned a hundred and forty years ago. The pictures of what he saw, as of the time he drew them, constitute a unique and valuable record" (Sherman).
