With royal warrants ranging from Thailand to Russia and much of Europe, it is no surprise that King Edward VII of England famously referred to Cartier as the ‘jeweller of kings and the king of jewellers’. Founded in Paris in 1847 by Louis-Francois Cartier, the firm came to dominate international jewellery design in the early 20th century under the auspices of his three enterprising sons: Louis Cartier in Paris, Pierre Cartier in New York and Jacques Cartier in London. With a roster of visionary designers such as Charles Jacqueau and Pierre Lemarchand, and charismatic creative director Jeanne Toussaint, Cartier’s designs articulated a wide range of influences into highly original and elegant jewels that defined their eras. Their ‘Tutti Frutti’ pieces brought carved emeralds, rubies and sapphires adapted from Indian jewels together in riotous combination from the mid 1920s, while their opulent ‘big cat’ jewels draped themselves across such legendary collectors as Barbara Hutton and the Duchess of Windsor, and became the house’s most beloved mascots. Cartier continues to inspire collectors worldwide with such design classics such as ‘Juste un Clou’ and ‘LOVE’ bracelets, as well as the versatile ‘Tank’ range of watches, and their supremely imaginative high jewellery collections.

This was followed, in 1939, by the Wright and Davies workshop which would produce watch cases exclusively for Cartier London. Prior to 1950, research suggests that Wright & Davies were making ladies’ cocktail and jewelry watches. However, from 1950, Cartier London began to sell their own range of established Cartier Paris models that were made in the Wright and Davies workshop. Presumably this new offering was carried out with the support of Cartier Paris – the latter must have assisted with the supply of Jaeger-LeCoultre/EWC movements and the maquettes for producing the iconic Parisian watch models.

Cartier was founded in Paris in 1847, despite the uncertainty and disruption during the century's ongoing political upheavals. Cartier kept going strong and continued to see success and growth over the ensuing decade, opening its first boutique in 1859. Cartier wanted to establish the company internationally, not only to make the Cartier name famous among the crowned heads of Europe, and was named "King of Jewellers, Jeweller of Kings." In 1904, Cartier launched their first Santos wristwatch, and followed it with other iconic wristwatches over the years. Includes Cartier box.

Far less common than traditional Tank models, the Tank Obus stands as a testament to Cartier’s creative design legacy and remains highly desirable among discerning collectors.

This particular interpretation elevates the model’s minimalist essence, embracing a monochromatic, sculptural aesthetic, with the richness of yellow gold permeating the entire design. All calibrations and numerals have been deliberately removed from the dial, ensuring a seamless visual flow from the bangle bracelet to the case and dial, allowing the warmth and opulence of yellow gold to take centre stage. The gold expanse is punctuated only by the blued steel hands and the sapphire cabochon-set winding crown, subtle yet iconic Cartier details that add depth and contrast without disrupting the watch’s fluid, unbroken geometry.
