Founded in 1875 in the Swiss village of Le Brassus, Audemars Piguet has long been one of the most esteemed watchmakers in the world. The company’s namesakes, Jules Louis Audemars and Edward Auguste Piguet, were childhood friends who’d both had successful careers in the industry — Audemars as a designer of movements and Piguet as regulator — before they joined forces. So, almost from the moment it was established, Audemars Piguet had horological gravitas. The manufacture’s creations certainly backed up its reputation: they debuted the world’s first minute-repeating wristwatch in 1892, the first skeletonized watch in 1934, and the world’s thinnest wristwatch in 1946. But it was in 1972 that Audemars Piguet introduced its greatest contribution to the history of watchmaking: the very first luxury sports watch, the iconic Royal Oak. The recent invention of quartz-powered movements posed a threat to traditional mechanical watchmakers so, in an effort to regain its relevance, Audemars Piguet commissioned legendary designer Gerald Genta to come up with something bold, modern, never seen before. Legend has it that Genta came back the next morning with sketches for the Royal Oak. The model was revolutionary; it introduced a whole new category of timepieces by utilizing steel, rather than platinum or gold, in a fine watch. Today, the brand continues to riff on its signature model, including the rugged Royal Oak Offshore and the “Equation of Time” featuring a perpetual calendar, lunar cycle, sunrise and sunset times. Additionally, the Millenary and Jules Audemars collections explore innovations in complex complications from tourbillons to minute repeaters.

Singapore Collectors' Edit: Watches

Audemars Piguet Royal Oak “Nick Faldo” Championship Edition, Reference 56175TT A limited edition tantalum and stainless steel bracelet watch with date, Circa 1995 Dial: grey Calibre: cal. 2612 quartz, 8 jewels Case: tantalum and stainless steel, case back secured by 8 screws Case number: No. 173 and D5226 Closure: tantalum and stainless steel Audemars Piguet bracelet and folding clasp Size: 33 mm diameter, bracelet circumference approximately 190 mm Signed: case, dial and movement Accessories: Audemars Piguet Certificat d’Origine et de Garantie, instruction manual and presentation box It is safe to say that the Royal Oak has, in recent years, cemented itself as a true design icon, transcending the watch industry. The original 1972 "Jumbo" model has always been coveted, but with the present shift towards smaller case sizes and collectors' desires for increasingly niche references, weird and wonderful sub-models are now all the rage, with the present "Nick Faldo" leading the charge. Released in the neo-vintage 1990s period, the reference 56175TT was the first Royal Oak to feature the material combination between stainless steel and tantalum, a darker and denser material that has now become a true cult classic within collectors' circles thanks to its unique and stark appearance. Made in a limited run of strictly 2,000 pieces for its Golf legend namesake, the "Nick Faldo" edition today stands as a coveted connoisseurs choice within the celebrated Royal Oak collection. “This lot is currently held under bond in Singapore. Following the sale, bonded lots will be returned to Hong Kong and released to the purchaser in Hong Kong. Collection or delivery of bonded lots in Singapore will not be available. Sotheby's offers a comprehensive shipping service for the convenience of purchasers. Purchasers should note that local import duties, sales taxes, use taxes and other applicable charges may arise upon importation of purchased property into their jurisdiction.”

Tantalum is a rare, hard metal known for its appealing dark hue and exceptional resistance to corrosion. Its use in watchmaking is uncommon due to the high temperatures required to make it malleable. This innovative approach, seen later with ceramic and frosted gold, is exemplified in this model’s striking combination of tantalum and rose gold.
