Thomas Brock English, 1847-1922 eve signed: T. BROCK. R.A. SCULPT and entitled EVE bronze, rich dark brown patina 87cm., 34Din. Brock, who had been elected RA in 1891, exhibited Eve at the Academy in 1898. Susan Beattie, not one of Brock's greatest admirers, acknowledges that Eve belongs within the mainstream of the New Sculpture movement and that, although 'encumbered by the title given to so many voluptuous figures in the Paris Salons, it is free from arch illusion, as tentative, subjective and poignant as Alfred Gilbert's early statuettes.' Eve's head is bowed, as if in shame; her hair falls in long tresses around her face, casting a shadow. Her left arm is stretched across her chest in a gesture both graceful and protective. Eve is Brock's first statue of an undraped female figure. Benedict Read notes that the New Sculpture's concern with the 'detailed modelling of flesh' offered an irresistible temptation for a display of nudity and Jeremy Cooper comments that Eve succeeds in fashioning 'that delicious combination of naturalism and spirituality found at the core of the New Sculpture'. Eve was an immediate success. The Times considered it to be the finest figure Brock had produced, both as regards beauty of modelling and expression of sentiment, while Art in 1898 asserted that in purity of line and strength of modelling it ranked amoung the most notable examples of British sculpture. The original statue exhibited at the Royal Academy was in plaster. Sir Henry Tate, shortly before he died in 1899, purchased a lifesize (175cm., 69in.) marble version and presented it to the newly founded Tate Gallery (then known as the National Gallery of British Art). Eve was later shown at the Paris Exhibition 1900 (where Brock was awarded the Grand Prix d'Honneur), Glasgow (Kelvingrove) 1901, Edinburgh (Royal Scottish Academy) 1903, St Louis Exhibition 1904, and Dublin (Irish International Exhibition) 1907. A number of half size (approx 89cm., 35in.) replicas in bronze were cast under Brock's supervision. One of these is in the Harris Museum and Art Gallery, Preston; another was sold at Sotheby's on 14 December 1983 (lot 226). A marble version of similar size was sold at Phillips 21 March 1985 (lot 311). Brock also had a number of smaller replicas cast for presentation to friends such as Lord Esher (Chairman of the Victoria Memorial Committee), Col. Walter Harding, who commissioned Brock's Black Prince for Leeds and Rudyard Kipling, who wrote 'It is splendid...I am taking it down to my home, where it will be a chief treasure for me and my children'. These were probably the same size (40.6cm., 16in.) as the plaster model given by Brock's executors to the Royal Academy after his death. The present bronze is a very fine English lost wax cast which retains a subtle textured surface and deep, rich patina. We are grateful to John Sankey for cataloguing this lot. Salvador, Prades and San Juan (Puerto Rico), 25 June 1917-9 August 1970, some tears & creases, 2 letters to Svecenski incomplete, a few repairs with translucent adhesive tape; together with a collection of 40 programmes, mainly for Casals's concerts in Barcelona (35 items, 1919-1931, with Casals as cellist, pianist and conductor of the Orquestra Pau Casals), including the Trio Cortot-Thibault-Casals in 1922, the remaining items being for concerts in Granollers, Perpignan, Prades and San Juan, together with 3 typescripts of the extensive notes for Casals's master-classes at Zermatt (1952-1961), and related matter
