Shackleton, Ernest Henry South. The story of Shackleton's last expedition 1914-1917. London: William Heinemann, 1919 8vo (250 x 154mm). Half-title, folding map, 87 plates (one colored, one double-page), after Frank Hurley or George Marston; signature possibly inserted later. Publisher's blue cloth, blocked in silver, top edge blue; head and foot of spine a little bumped. First edition, fourth impression. Boldly signed by Shackleton on the front free endpaper. The Endurance left South Georgia Island on December 5th, 1914. Shortly after its departure, the ship became trapped in heavy pack ice in the Weddell Sea in January 1915 and eventually, on October 27, was crushed and sank. Shackleton and his crew were forced to abandon ship and the expedition. Shackleton then led a perilous 800-mile voyage in a small lifeboat, the James Caird, from Elephant Island to South Georgia to secure the rescue of his stranded crew. Property from an American private collection

Property from an American private collection Ernest Shackleton (editor) Aurora Australis. Antarctica: “Published at the Winter Quarters of the British Antarctic Expedition, 1907 During the Winter Months of April, May, June, July, 1908 Illustrated with lithographs and etchings; by George Marston. Printed at the Sign of 'The Penguins'; by Joyce and Wild. Latitude 77°.. 32' South Longitude 166°.. 12' East, (1908-09) FIRST EDITION, 4to (260 x 190mm.), INSCRIBED BY FRANK WILD'S BROTHER LAURENCE TO HIS GRANDSON on preliminary blank leaf (see provenance), 94 printed leaves, including coloured title-page and 11 etched or lithographed illustrations by George Marston (including one in sepia and 3 tipped-in), bound by Bernard Day in original bevelled venesta boards taken from expedition packing crates, inside lower cover stencilled "BRITISH ANT / SHIP NIM / LYTT", backed with leather from horse harnesses, title and penguin motif blindstamped on spine, sewn with green silk binding cord, edges uncut, one or two unobtrusive wormholes at lower edge of some leaves, minor dust-stains and spotting, a few small wormholes to boards, joints repaired retaining original blindstamped backstrip, lower corner of upper board professionally restored THE FIRST BOOK PRINTED AND BOUND IN ANTARCTICA. THIS COPY INSCRIBED BY FRANK WILD'S BROTHER LAURENCE TO HIS GRANDSON "To my grandson / Nicholas J. Fright / on his 21st. birthday / 31 December 1970. / To keep in memory of his Great-uncle / Frank Wild, who made this book in the / Antarctic. / With best wishes, / Laurence C. Wild." “THE MOST RENOWNED TITLE IN THE ANTARCTIC CANON” (Taurus). The book is also a celebrated rarity. According to Murray and Marston’s Antarctic Days, at most 100 copies were produced, but Rosove notes that “approximately sixty-five copies have been accounted for to date", of which around half are located in institutional collections. That such a beautiful book should be produced by amateurs, and under such testing conditions, is remarkable. Shackleton had previously edited the first volume of the the South Polar Times on Scott's Discovery expedtion prepared in a single copy in the Antarctic and later published in England in a limited edition. Shackleton had previously been the editor of the South Polar Times, published in England to commemorate Scott's first expedition of 1901-1904. The success of this led to his shipping a press, type and paper with his Nimrod expedition of 1907-1909. During the Antarctic winter of 1908 Frank Wild and Ernest Joyce, who had received some training in England, acted as printers. Murray and Marston describe one of the main stumbling-blocks of Antarctic printing: “It is too cold to keep the printer’s ink fluid; it gets sticky and freezes. To cope with this a candle was set burning underneath the plate on which the ink was. This was all right, but it made the ink too fluid, and the temperature had to be regulated by moving the candle about.” Reflecting the expedition's actual provisions, the contents of the original packing crates are stencilled on the inside of the venesta covers. This copy has "BRITISH ANT / SHIP NIM / LYTT" stencilled on the inside upper cover. LITERATURE: Conrad p. 146; Renard 1435; Rosove 304.A1.b; Spence 1095; Taurus Collection 60; Robert B. Sir Ernest Shackleton Large manuscript map of Antarctica with routes relating to the expedition of 1914-16, drawn and signed by Shackleton with a presentation inscription dated 27 November 1918 MANUSCRIPT MAP (1415 x 935mm.), in blue and red crayon on paper, with several tracks relating to the expedition of 1914-1916, SIGNED BY SHACKLETON AT HIS FARTHEST POINT SOUTH IN 1909 (880 23') and with a signed presentation inscription by Shackleton to D.D. Hirst "In remembrance of his assistance on H.M.S. Dublin 27 Nov 1918", short tears at folds A VERY LARGE MANUSCRIPT MAP OF ANTARCTICA HAND-DRAWN AND ANNOTATED BY SIR ERNEST SHACKLETON, principally recording his epic Antarctic expedition of 1914-1916 and the heroic rescue of his crew. The aim of this expedition was to cross the continent with a sledge party to be landed by the Endurance in the Weddell Sea, while another party in the Aurora was to lay depots into the interior from their base at McMurdo Sound in the Ross Sea for the trans-polar party. Shackleton and his polar party would find these depots, which contained supplies sufficient enough to allow completion of the trek. The various tracks on the map (accompanied by an explanatory key) tell the story of what actually happened. The Endurance was beset by ice and drifted for nine months before Shackleton abandoned her and drifted on the ice for a further five months eventually reaching the uncertain safety of Elephant Island. It was from here that Shackleton made his epic open boat trip in the James Caird (now preserved at Dulwich College) to South Georgia in an effort to bring help to those left behind. After three abortive attempts the remainder of the party were rescued. Shackleton then went to New Zealand and proceeded to McMurdo Sound in the Aurora to bring back the depot-laying party. The First World War was still in progress and many of those rescued were sent to the front to assist with the war effort. In 1918 Shackleton was appointed by the War Office to take charge of winter equipment on the North Russian Front, supporting the North Russian expeditionary force. In November of that year Shackleton sailed with General Maynard from Murmansk for London on the cruiser HMS Dublin. Shackleton was a seasoned lecturer and this map may have been drawn by Shackleton to illustrate a talk during that voyage. PROVENANCE: Sir Ernest Shackleton (1874-1922); signed presentation inscription by Shackleton to D.D. Hirst "In remembrance of his assistance on H.M.S. Dublin 27 Nov 1918"; Sotheby's, Valuable Printed Books, 27-28 June 1991, lot 459

Hurley, Frank Collection of photographs taken during Ernest Shackleton's Imperial Transantarctic Endurance Expedition of 1914-1916 69 silver gelatin photographs (mostly: 154 x 204 mm or the reverse), window mounted on grey paper (sheet: 304 x 380 mm); faint edge toning, scattered silvering, mostly minor and to edges of photographs, several lightly scratched, a few mounts lightly soiled. Housed in a folding maroon cloth portfolio. A series of sweeping Antarctic views by the the official photographer of the Endurance expedition. The Australian-born photographer and filmmaker Frank Hurley undertook his first Antarctic expedition in 1911, after he was hired by Douglas Mawson as the official photographer for the Australasian Antarctic Expedition. They reached Cape Denison in January 1912, and set up a base from which to undertake further excursions. Over the next two years, despite howling winds and the ongoing threat of frostbite, Hurley captured a series of dramatic photographs and film of the expedition. Upon his return to Australia he put together a film of the journey called Home of the Blizzard, the success of which would lead Sir Ernest Shackleton to invite him to join him on the Endurance the following year. As the official photographer of the Imperial Transantarctic Expedition, Hurley was tasked with creating a photographic record as Shackleton attempted the first land crossing of the Antarctic continent. His photographs depict Antarctic scenery and life aboard the Endurance, as well as the hardships suffered by the party when their ship was destroyed in the ice, forcing them to spend nearly five months on Elephant Island waiting while Shackleton and five men made an epic voyage to South Georgia in search of rescue (see note about provenance below). "[Hurley's] photographs show scenes of dogs being exercised on the ice, the crew playing soccer on the ice floe, seals being skinned to extract the blubber to fuel the stove that Hurley had created out of materials salvaged from the wreck, and the Endurance covered with rime on a moonlit night; he thought the ship was at its most beautiful 'when the bright moonlight etched her inky silhouette, or transformed her into a vessel from fairyland' (Hurley, pp. 158–9). He also filmed the Endurance as it was forced out of the ice and crushed by moving slabs of ice, and the masts crashing down before the ship eventually sank. Although Shackleton had made Hurley leave his glass negatives on board when they abandoned ship, he went back in before the ship broke up, and 'bared from head to waist probed in the mushy ice' to retrieve them, only to be forced to select what could be stored in one tin; he was able to save only 150 out of more than 500, and smashed the remaining negatives lest he should change his mind" (DNB). The present lot includes some of Hurley's most striking images from the expedition, including the Endurance stuck in the ice at night and brightly illuminated by Hurley's magnesium flash, Shackleton and Hurley at Patience Camp, Shackleton going out to board the relief boat, and the wreckage of the Endurance as it was being crushed by the ice and sinking. The window mounts on grey paper seem to match recorded presentation albums commissioned by Hurley shortly following his return from Antarctica. These albums were issued under the title: Photographs of Scenes and Incidents in connection with the happenings to the Weddell Sea Party 1914, 1915, 1916, and contained seventy-nine photographs with additional title and index leaves. The recorded copies can be divided into two types, with some examples containing silver gelatin prints window mounted on grey paper (see the Janet Stancomb-Wills copy, Christie's New York, 27 September 2006, lot 225) and others with carbon prints on cream card leaves with typed title labels below each image (see the Dr Leonard Duncan Albert Hussey copy, Christie's New York, 23 September 2004, lot 218). Shackleton's Last Antarctic Expedition. Scala Souvenir, n.d. [c. 1922]. 8 photogravure plates. Original wrappers; a little creased and browned The Shackleton–Rowett Expedition, or the Quest Expedition, is seen as the last of the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. The Quest was a converted Norwegian sealing boat. It soon proved inadequate for the demanding Antarctic seas; she leaked, she was slow, and she guzzled fuel. Indeed, the trip was to prove resoundingly ill-omened — Shackleton had a sudden heart attack aboard the ship before the expedition work had begun. Frank Wild took over command and Shackleton was buried on South Georgia, the island across which he had heroically trekked to rescue his crew during the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, 1914-1917. Sold as a group lot, not subject to return.

London: Smith, Elder, & Co, 1907-1914; Cambridge: Scott Polar Research Institute in association with Bonham, 2010 4 volumes, 4to (275 x 205 mm). Half-titles, frontispieces, maps, colored and non-colored illustrations, photographs, first two volumes no. 95 of 250, third volume no. 93 of 350, fourth volume no. 90 of 500; frontispiece of volume I near detached, transfer of frontispiece to title-pages, pps. 55-85 loose in volume III. Publisher’s pictorial blue cloth, gilt edges; scratch to spine of volume 1, foot of spine of volume III a little rubbed with some exposure. First published edition. A facsimile of original issues of The South Polar Times printed in the Antarctic by the members of Scott's expeditions. A unique publication intended to document their experiences, observations, and creative expressions during the long, isolating winters, it was first produced during Robert Falcon Scott’s Discovery Expedition (1901-1904) and later revived during the Terra Nova Expedition (1910-1913). The journal combined articles, poetry, illustrations, and scientific notes. Edited primarily by expedition members like Edward Wilson, it served both as a creative outlet and a morale booster. “It has always seemed churlish to list this title under Shackleton, who only edited the first of the three volumes, for the publication arose during Scott’s two expeditions. On the first of these, Shackleton was invalided home before its completion, while he was most decidedly not a member of the second Scott effort. Still, this should not detract from the publication, a lithographed facsimile of typescripts produced by members of Scott’s party during three bleak Antarctic winters spent in his company” (Taurus). (Shackleton, Ernest Henry) — Frank Worsley Shackleton's Boat Journey. London: Philip Allan & Co., Ltd., [1933] Small 8vo (167 x 104 mm). Untrimmed. Blue cloth; spine very slightly sunned. First edition, inscribed by Frank Worsley to David Dykes —"full speed ahead for 1936." Frank Worsley was the captain of Endurance, the ship chosen for the 1914-1917 Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition by Ernest Shackleton. He expertly navigated the ship through the perilous ice-choked waters of the Weddell Sea, however, Endurance became trapped in pack ice and was crushed. Worsley's navigational skills became even more vital: using only a sextant, he charted a daring 800-mile journey in a small lifeboat, the James Caird, from Elephant Island to South Georgia. This feat ensured the survival of the stranded crew. It has now been widely regarded as the greatest small-boat journey ever completed.
