[Los Angeles: Paramount Pictures, 1933] Folio, mimeographed typescript, PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED BY THE ACTRESS WHO PLAYED ALICE (“To | Ann Waddington | from | Alice in Wonderland | Charlotte Henry”) on first photograph, 642 illustrations by William Cameron Menzies, extra-illustrated with 44 black and white production photographs, SIGNED BY 27 MEMBERS OF THE CAST on half-title, full red morocco gilt, spine gilt in compartments The script to the 1933 Paramount Pictures adaptation of Carroll’s classics appears to have been available in a numbered edition (number 22 sold in these rooms, 27 February 1975) and, apparently, an un-numbered edition (cast-member Ronald “Baby LeRoy” Overacker’s sold at Bonhams, Los Angeles, 10 December 2019). Both were bound in wrappers. The present copy is a sumptuously bound extra-illustrated edition which features 44 black and white production photographs. The 1933 adaptation proved to be an unsuccessful experiment by Paramount, despite an all-star cast including Cary Grant as the Mock Turtle, Gary Cooper as The White Knight, W.C. Fields as Humpty Dumpty, Edna May Oliver as the Red Queen, Edward Everett Horton as The Hatter, Charles Ruggles as The March Hare, and Baby LeRoy as The Joker. The actress Charlotte Henry (1914-1980) enjoyed her first leading role as Alice, beating over 6,800 other actresses who auditioned. The recipient of this sumptuous extra-illustrated edition, Ann Waddington, is unidentified. It was given to the present owner’s family over three decades ago. The American film director, screenwriter, and producer Joseph L. Mankiewicz (1909-1993) had a long Hollywood career. He is best remembered for All About Eve (1950) which was nominated for 14 Academy Awards and won six. William Cameron Menzies (1896-1957) was a hugely influential production designer and art director. He received an Honorary Academy Award "for outstanding achievement in the use of color for the enhancement of dramatic mood" in Gone With the Wind.

Michael Stringer had a career spanning five decades, and in 1974 was elected president of the Guild of Film Art Directors (now known as the British Film Designers Guild). Original artwork is exceptionally rare and highly prized by collectors. This 1972 British musical was based on two of Lewis Carroll's books - Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking-Glass (1871) . It was directed by William Sterling, with the musical score by John Barry and lyrics by Don Black. The film stars a distinguished group of actors, including Fiona Fullerton as Alice, Michael Crawford as the White Rabbit, Peter Sellers as the March Hare, and Dudley Moore as the Dormouse.

Macmillan and Co., 1866 8vo, second [first published] edition, wood-engraved illustrations after John Tenniel, original pictorial cloth gilt, pale blue endpapers (binder's label on lower fixed endpaper), gilt edges, some spotting, some leaves frayed, some repairs to fraying or tears, rebacked preserving original spine, extremities rubbed, upper hinge split, bookplate [with, loosely inserted:] THIRTEEN AUTOGRAPH LETTERS BY THE AUTHOR, in the third person, to [Frederick Startridge] Ellis, requesting numerous books from the bookseller’s catalogues, deciding against a purchase (“he finds it a much dearer book than he fancied”), offering books for sale (“…he would like… an offer… He wants the value in money, not books…” and “Mr… Dodgson would be glad to know what Mr Ellis could allow him, in cash, for a 1st edition of Paradise Lost”) with additional requests (“Mr Dodgson… would thank Mr Ellis to lay it aside for him, as he is coming to London shortly”), written in black or purple ink, 14 pages, mostly 8vo, Christ Church Oxford, numerous creases and occasional tears, each with spike hole, some folds, occasional browning, some leaves affected by damp The firm of booksellers at 29 New Bond Street could trace its origins to 1728 and, in the middle of the nineteenth century, was the business of Frederick Startridge Ellis (1830-1901). F.S. Ellis was a friend and publisher of Dante Gabriel Rossetti and William Morris. He also counted Swinburne, Burne-Jones and Ruskin among his other friends. He edited many of the Kelmscott Press books (and proof-read the Kelmscott Chaucer). Ellis retired in 1885 which caused Quaritch to write "You and I are really the first (if not the only) bibliophiles in England... Your name and mine will go down together in the annals of bookselling... Your success has been due to your tact, excellent diplomacy, and above all to your commercial genius; furthermore you were gifted with an eye for beauty..." Some of the stock of Ellis' business was sold by Sotheby's on his retirement but the main business passed to his nephew, Gilbert Ellis (1858-1902). It is this Mr Ellis who is pictured in Henry M. Paget's celebrated print of 'A Book-Sale at Sotheby's Auction-Room' (printed in the Graphic in 1888). The firm became Ellis and Elvey and, eventually, "The Old Book Shop". It closed in the mid 1940s and part of the firm’s archive is in the collection of The University of California, Los Angeles. The choice of Dodgson’s books is eclectic with titles including Mathematical Magic, Hogarth on Drawing, Poets’ Wit and Humour and works by Philip Sidney, Laurence Sterne and John Keats, etc. In his letter offering Paradise Lost, Dodgson provides a drawing of the title-page. Presentation copy of the first work from S.H. Dodgson, the author's brother. Skeffington Hume Dodgson was the brother of Lewis Carroll. Ordained deacon in 1865, he held various curacies until 1895 when he became vicar of Vowchurch in Herefordshire. Alice Adventures in Wonderland was gifted by him to Roseberry Staveley of Old Sleningford, Ripon, North Yorkshire. While the present edition of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is technically the second edition, it is the first published edition. The first edition of 2,000 was recalled by Dodgson, following the unsatisfactory printing of Tenniel's illustrations, and was never offered for public sale. This copy is in the first state, with the inverted "S" in the last line of contents page. For this new edition the book was re-set by the printer Richard Clay from a copy of the 1865 Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (prepared by The Clarendon Press, Oxford); it is this version which formed the basis for all future Macmillan editions. The present work “seems not so much to translate a literary text into another medium as to provide a complementary experience, one in which Alice herself is not really involved and very few characters are depicted” (Burnstein). Edward Francis Sampson where they "engaged lodgings for a week". The diary entry for 17 June continues "our fellow-lodgers are a Mr. and Mrs. Paine, and their little girl about eight years old". This copy of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland was signed for the eight year old Adelaide Paine on the day Carroll left Margate and returned to Oxford.
