CATALOGUE NOTE

T he 80s saw the consecration of Zao Wou-Ki’s work. Unanimously praised by art critics, his work is shown in exhibitions all around the world, including in China, where he returned for the first time since his departure in 1947.

A perfect blend of Western and Eastern influences, the master follows in the footsteps of the great multi-secular Chinese painters while continuing to spread the lyrical abstraction movement through the United States and Europe after WWII.

15.07.89 perfectly embodies the necessary reconciliation of China with the Western world while showing the outstanding technical mastery Zao Wou-Ki achieved during this decade, which also gave birth to Juin-Octobre 1985, a masterpiece as well as a world record – selling for $65 million at Sotheby’s Hong Kong in September 2018 – for the artist.
