Wedding Gift to Their Imperial Majesties, A Rare and Important Imperial Silver-Gilt and Enamel Triptych Icon of the Feodorovskaya Mother of God, Savelev Brothers, Kostroma, 1894

Given to the last Russian Emperor Nicholas II and Empress Alexandra Feodorovna on the occasion of their wedding in 1894, this icon is a rare and unusual example of excellent enamel craftsmanship from the lesser known region of Kostroma. This work demonstrates that Russian works of art of exceptional quality were also produced outside of the “two capitals”, Moscow and St. Petersburg.

A pair of Fabergé jewelled gold, enamel and hardstone cufflinks, workmaster Henrik Wigström, St Petersburg, 1908-1917
Estimate: £12,000–18,000

Most likely commissioned by Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna, who was born Princess Dagmar of Denmark, these cufflinks are modelled as a symbol of the Danish chivalric Order of the Elephant. Several of the Dowager Empress’ nephews and grandnephews were made knights of the order and the quality of the work suggests a possible commission by an Imperial family member.

An Imperial Presentation Fabergé jewelled gold and enamel box, workmaster Michael Perchin, St Petersburg, 1897
Estimate: £150,000–200,000

This box was presented by Emperor Nicholas II to Maximilian Freiherr von Lyncker, the Haus-Marschall to Kaiser Wilhelm II, following a diplomatic visit to Potsdam. It is a rare example featuring the Romanov Griffon, a symbol of the Imperial Dynasty often ignored in favour of the Imperial Eagle state coat of arms.

An Imperial Fabergé gem-set silver and wood kovsh, Moscow, 1899-1906
Estimate: £15,000–20,000

This work delicately combines the wood traditionally used for early Slavic kovshes with the silver and gems favoured during Russia’s Tsardom and Imperial periods. This example was jointly purchased by the Emperor and Empress’ households, presumably as a Christmas gift.

A porcelain coffee pot and twelve porcelain coffee cups and saucers from the Grand Duke Alexander Alexandrovich Service, Imperial Porcelain Factory, St Petersburg, periods of Alexander II (1855-1881) and Alexander III (1881-1894)

The extensive Banqueting service was originally commissioned in the 1860s for the personal use of the future Emperor Alexander III in his residence at Anichkov palace. Quite popular, the service continued to be used throughout the reign of his successor, Nicholas II. The present lot is one of the ten lots containing items from the service.

A pair of monumental gilt-bronze mounted porcelain vases, Imperial Porcelain Factory, St Petersburg, dated 1825
Estimate: £1,000,000 - 1,500,000

At almost 1.4 meters tall, this pair is one the earliest known examples of monumental porcelain vases produced in the Russian Empire. The personal interest of Emperor Nicholas I in Imperial porcelain production ensured that the works made during his reign were of the highest quality and on par with their Western counterparts.

A gem-set silver and ceramic vase, Imperial Stroganov School, Moscow, 1906

The Art Nouveau style of this vase is relatively unusual for the Russian Empire. Produced in the innovative workshops of the Stroganov School, it skilfully imitates the texture and colour of natural turquoise.

A rare and monumental Soviet porcelain kumys pot for the Mongolian People's Republic, Lomonosov State Porcelain Factory, Leningrad, 1939

An (often) alcoholic drink, kumys is traditionally made out of fermented mare’s milk by the nomadic peoples of Central Asia. This exceptionally rare porcelain pot for ceremonial kumys preparation and presentation was commissioned especially for the Mongolian People’s Republic and produced at the Lomonosov State Porcelain Factory. The vessel form was created by Serafima Yakovleva, while the painting is after the design by Ivan Riznich.
