  Alexei Bogoliubov, View of Venice with Santa Maria della Salute in the Background. Estimate £250,000-300,000.

  Of all the artist’s numerous views of La Serenissima, this is the one that Vasily Mathé chose to depict in his etching Bogoliubov at Work which was given as a gift to all those who attended the commemorative lunch following Bogoliubov’s funeral.

  Konstantin Kryzhitsky, Woodland Landscape.
  Estimate £80,000-120,000

  This view probably depicts the heavily wooded landscape outside Zvenigorod near Count Sheremetev’s estate of Vvedenskoe at which Kryzhitsky was a frequent guest. Infrared reflectography however has revealed an entirely different underlying composition with domes and church towers which bears a striking resemblance to the Volga town of Yurevets.

  Ilya Repin, Portrait of Yuri Repin.
  Estimate £750,000-1,000,000.

  In their 1948 monograph, Grabar and Zilbershtein described Repin’s tender portrait of his son as ‘an exquisite work… the composition is striking… the figure, standing in the open-air, is modelled masterfully… The landscape, air and sun are conveyed with a level of perfection that is so rarely found in other plein-air studies of this period’.

  Isaak Levitan, Summer. Estimate £1,000,000-1,500,000

  Offered for the first time at auction, Summer was exhibited alongside Levitan’s acknowledged masterpiece By the Whirlpool (State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow) at the 20th Itinerant exhibition in 1892. It comes from an important American collection and forms part of a single-owner group of 19th century paintings which also includes two portraits by Repin.

  Isaak Levitan, Overgrown Pond. Estimate £450,000-650,000.

  Inspired by Vasily Polenov’s canvas of the same name, Levitan produced three other known oils bearing this title between 1887-1888, one of which is lost and the other two are in museum collections.

  Konstantin Korovin, After the Ball. Estimate £100,000-150,000.

  Painted on the eve of the Revolution, After the Ball records a balmy Moscow evening in a scene from a world which was about to be consigned to the history books. The painting was acquired by a doctor in Kiev before 1935 and has been in the collection of the same family ever since.

  Petr Konchalovsky, Women Bathing under the Willows. Estimate £180,000-250,000.

  This impressive monumental canvas of a group of female bathers in a clearing belongs to Konchalovsky’s celebrated Abramtsevo cycle. The artist’s first biographer Pavel Muratov illustrated the still-unfinished painting in his monograph on the artist published in 1923. Shortly afterwards it was taken out of Russia to Paris where it hung in the apartment of the artist’s nieces, Elena and Natalia Konchalovskaya, until they gave it to the present owner.

  Leon Schulman-Gaspard, A Well-Deserved Rest.
  Estimate £50,000-70,000.

  Schulman-Gaspard emigrated to America during the First World War with his wife, the ballerina Evelyn Addel, and would remain there for the rest of his days. This rare early work dates from his pre-emigration period and was exhibited at the artist’s large one man show held at the Galerie Boute in Brussels.

  Estimate £50,000-70,000.

  In November Sotheby’s set a new record for the artist at auction with the 1919 oil Construction No.95. This work on paper belongs to the same period and was exhibited at the celebrated itinerant exhibition The Non-Objective World in 1971-1972.
