  Many of the objects included in Saturday at Sotheby’s: Asian Art are traditional, dynastic objects that have since been modified and taken on new lives. Lot 926 , a group of four jade belt hooks, includes an 18^th century example mounted as a magnifying glass handle. The converted object is featured here alongside lot 1026 , a 19^th century inkstone with ‘zitan’ box and cover; lot 1129 , a 19^th century woodblock print book of insects by Shunkei Mori; and part of lot 890 , a Japanese textile from a collection of 26 textiles.

  This setting is a harmonious meeting of archaic and modern forms. We can also see the different styles of Chinese artistic representation employed by different mediums—pictograms in lot 1160 , the calligraphy in bronze script by Zhong Yulong; figural representation in the brass plaques of lot 918 , the six-panel ‘hongmu’ screen; and illustrative rebuses in lot 990 , two famille-rose ‘magpie and prunus’ tianqiuping.

  This group of furniture is from the collection of Mina Merrill Prindle, an avid art collector and friend of Sarah Pike Conger, friend to the empress Cixi and wife of the United States minister to China during the Boxer Rebellion era. Mrs. Prindle acquired several works from her friend Mrs. Conger’s collection, and the latter’s influence is seen in the works included in this auction.

  A 'Huanghuali' and Mixed-Wood Square-Corner Cabinet Late Qing Dynasty. Estimate $20,000 — 30,000.

  A ‘huanghuali’ and mixed-wood square-corner cabinet from the late Qing dynasty, is an example of one of the largest pieces in the Chinese classical furniture canon. Smaller than the compound cabinet, the capacity and outline of the fangjiaogui is still impressive and imposing. The flat surfaces belie the history of large cased Chinese furniture, once always designed to be thoroughly decorated with lacquer and thus requiring a clear canvas for embellishment.

  A Jadeite 'Lingzhi' Pendant Late Qing Dynasty, Estimate $3,000 — 5,000.

  A vividly green jadeite toggle, depicts a robust cluster of lingzhi, the magical fungus that has long been regarded as a panacea in Chinese culture. The distinctive form is commonly seen in the outline of a ruyi scepter. As a result lingzhi, among the most commonly used elements in Chinese iconography and decoration, are synonymous with the auspicious phrase ‘ruyi’ (coming to fruition).
