    A study for a painting in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago, this portrait depicts Jean Renoir (1894-1978), the artist’s son who later became a legendary film director. Renoir sought to capture the intimacy and spirit of family life, particularly through one of his most cherished subjects: his children.

    During the mid-1890s, Renoir travelled extensively and evidently stumbled upon the beautiful and culturally rich seaside town of La Rochelle, a destination that attracted many French writers and intellectuals including Voltaire and Rabelais.

    Paysage du Midi is an exquisite example of one of Renoir’s mature landscapes, depicting the sun-drenched terrain of the South of France. In his later landscapes, Renoir reached new heights of painterly expression. Striving to recreate fleeting moments of nature – a gust of wind, the fall of sunlight through trees – the artist imbued the present work with a sense of dynamism and energy in the form of rapidly executed, feathery brushstrokes.
