About the Museum
Elegant, early-19th-century interiors set the tone at this atmospheric museum overlooking the King’s Gardens in the heart of Copenhagen. Its collection is among the ten most important in the Western world and features three distinct groups: The collection of 18th-century European art comprises furniture and other decorative art. It also includes an especially exquisite selection of French furniture from David Roentgen’s workshop, Dutch and French paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries, and works by a number of leading Danish Golden Age painters. The collection of Danish early Modern art consists of paintings, sculptures, and ceramics made between 1880 and 1950, and includes no fewer than eleven works by Vilhelm Hammershøi. The collection of Islamic art guides visitors through 1,200 years of art history, and covers the period from the advent of Islam in the 7th century to 1850.
