About the Museum

The Taipei Fine Arts Museum (TFAM) is Taiwan’s first museum dedicated to modern and contemporary art and is the city’s official art museum. Its mission is to preserve, research, develop, and popularize Taiwanese modern and contemporary art and to encourage the study and production of art in Taiwan. To this end, TFAM organizes exhibitions of Taiwanese and international art, runs an art education program, and holds the Taipei Arts Awards in recognition of contemporary artists.
TFAM traces its origins to 1976, when the Taipei Municipal Government embarked on a plan to enhance the city’s cultural life by constructing a high-quality museum. TFAM was opened to the public in 1983. The building’s architecture incorporates many elements of traditional Chinese design; its tubular shape is identical to the Chinese character for “fountain,” reflecting the museum’s purpose as a live source of culture.
