About the Museum

Reaching from the ancient world to the present, the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art comprises over 11,000 objects that tell the story of African culture. Ranging from Nigeria to the Congo, Ethiopia to South Africa, the collection spans the whole length of the continent, presenting both art and artefacts including textiles, masks, sculpture and painting. The museum is also home to a vast photographic archive and a world-class library.
