Sleek unifier of state collections

Norway’s National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design, which opened in 2022 at the site of the former Vestbanen railway station in central Oslo, is the Nordic region’s largest art museum. It dates to 1837, with the creation of Norway’s first public art museum; in 2003, several state museums merged to form the institution as it exists today. The collection of more than 400,000 works of art, craft and design from antiquity to the present day form the basis of the comprehensive permanent exhibition, displayed across two floors. The chronological presentation showcases the development of Norwegian art, in addition to works by international artists, and includes royal costumes from Queen Maud and Queen Sonja, busts from Roman emperors, the earliest Norwegian landscapes and a room dedicated to the expressive paintings of Edvard Munch, including a version of his famous “The Scream” (1893).
