About the Museum

The Nairobi Gallery is a National Monument that presents temporary art exhibits and houses the Murumbi African Heritage Collection. It is located at the intersection of Kenyatta Avenue/ Uhuru Highway in the heart of Nairobi City. The historic building in which it is housed was built in 1913, and was the Old PC’s office building fondly referred to as ”Hatches, Matches and Dispatches”, because of the births, marriages and deaths that were recorded there. Now a museum, its permanent collection is based on the Murumbi African Heritage collection, which includes ancient sculptures, paintings and artifacts of daily life from diverse African cultures. These were collected by Joseph & Sheila Murumbi whose biographies are also told in one of the galleries. The museum also presents exhibitions of local and international artists.
