About the Museum
The Museum of Contemporary Art Toronto (MOCA) was founded in 1999 as the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art (MOCCA), and has been celebrated for its incisive, artist-centric approach to programming. Since its inception, MOCA has embraced a spirit of evolution, occupying several locations before settling in 2018 into its current home, a renovated former factory in Toronto’s Lower Junction district — once the city’s tallest building. MOCA is dedicated to fostering artistic experimentation and engaging with the urgent cultural issues of our time. Its dynamic exhibitions program showcases groundbreaking contemporary art, often through newly commissioned works, and has featured internationally acclaimed artists such as Phyllida Barlow, Kapwani Kiwanga, Shirin Neshat, Jeffrey Gibson, and Sarah Sze. At its former location on Queen West, the museum functioned as a vibrant hub for creative exchange and played a pivotal role in shaping the city’s contemporary art scene. Today, MOCA continues to build on this legacy by forging collaborative partnerships with leading like-minded artists, organizations, institutions and festivals from Toronto and further afield.
