Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago (MCA)

Ahead-of-the-curve contemporary art

As one of the largest multidisciplinary museums in the United States, the MCA exhibits work by leading postwar and contemporary artists. Notable debut exhibitions have included Frida Kahlo’s first solo U.S. show and Jeff Koons’ first solo museum exhibition. On its founding in 1967, the MCA was a non-collecting institution focused on rotating exhibitions of contemporary art. It later began acquiring works and the collection is strong in postwar art, particularly late surrealism, pop art, minimalism and conceptual art, in addition to 1980s postmodern and contemporary painting, sculpture, photography, video, installation and related media. Highlights include major works by Jasper Johns, Andy Warhol, Cindy Sherman, Kara Walker and Alexander Calder. To mark the museum’s 50th anniversary in 2017, it opened a restaurant designed by the British-Trinidadian artist Chris Ofili, featuring a mural called “The Sorceress’ Mirror.”
