Creative disciplines converge at Columbus Circle

Founded in 1956 as the Museum of Contemporary Crafts and later becoming the American Craft Museum, this institution has long celebrated the changing role of craft in society and its remit now spans artisanal craftsmanship, digital work, fashion, architecture, interior design and performance. Hierarchies between creative approaches and materials are blurred in its dynamic exhibition program.

Since 2008, it has been housed in the 54,000 square foot Jerome and Simona Chazen Building in Columbus Circle, Manhattan. The permanent collection features art, craft and design objects from around the world dating from 1950 to the present day, and includes pieces by Faith Ringgold and Derrick Adams. The Tiffany & Co. Foundation Jewelry Gallery is a rare institutional center for the presentation and study of art and studio jewelry, and the museum’s open artist studios invite viewers to watch makers at work in real time. Meanwhile, its restaurant, Robert, based on the upper floor with spectacular views, and The Store at MAD, are both draws for visitors in their own right.
