Shanghai’s new cultural colossus

Opened in 2021 by the Lujiazui Group, the Museum of Art Pudong (MAP) presents a world-class exhibition program in addition to showcasing contemporary artists from across China. Designed by Jean Nouvel, the five-story geometric building is a sprawling, multi-use arts complex situated in a prime location along the Huangpu River. It features 13 exhibition halls and a rooftop terrace with stunning views. MAP does not have a permanent collection, but thanks to collaborations with institutions around the world—part of its mission to foster international exchange—the museum hosts varied exhibitions ranging from classical Chinese art to international contemporary art, with past shows dedicated to Vincent van Gogh, JMW Turner, El Anatsui, Cao Fei, the Prado collection, Surrealism from the National Galleries of Scotland, Caravaggio, Zeng Fanzhi, op art from the Tate collection and Xu Bing. In 2025, the museum will present a lineup of exhibitions, including a retrospective of Chen Yifei, a showcase of masterpieces from the Musée d’Orsay, and more.
