About the Museum

Opened in 2009 on the North Sea island of Föhr, the Museum Kunst der Westküste was founded on the collection of Professor Frederik Paulsen, chairman of Ferring Pharmaceuticals. Its chief focus is 19th and 20th century maritime paintings by Danish, German, Dutch and Norwegian artists, with figures such as Max Beckmann and Edvard Munch represented. More recently the museum has started to collect contemporary works by artists including Martin Parr, Frank Bölter and Anja Jensen, widening its exploration of the themes of the sea and coastal life.
