Museum der Kulturen Basel

Basel | Switzerland

Basel’s beacon for cultural diversity

The Museum der Kulturen Basel is the largest anthropological museum in Switzerland. Its collection, with roughly 340,000 artefacts from Africa, the Americas, Asia and Oceania, includes many masterpieces to match its world-renowned textile collection and significant holdings of historic photography. After comprehensive renovation work that included an addition by star architects Herzog & de Meuron, the Museum der Kulturen Basel reopened to the public in 2011. Since that time, the institution’s main focus has been on contemporary issues, both in its temporary and permanent exhibitions, which reflect the interrelations between different cultures at different times.
