Pioneering modernists, especially Picasso and Klee
The Museum Berggruen is one of the most important museums of modern art in Berlin. It first opened to the public in 1996 and displayed an impressive collection of works by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Paul Klee and Alberto Giacometti. The museum owes its name and genesis to the art dealer and collector Heinz Berggruen (1914-2007), one of Paris’s leading gallerists, particularly in prints and drawings by Picasso. Berggruen's private collection constitutes the majority of the museum’s holdings, notably with more than 120 works by Picasso, 70 works by Klee and a collection of African sculptures that inspired many European modernists. The Museum Berggruen is currently closed for major renovations and the collection is on an international tour. The reopening is planned for 2025.
