About the Museum
Founded in 1947, the Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand is home to the most important collection of modern and classical western art outside Europe and North America, comprised of around 8000 works primarily acquired in the 1940s and 1950s.
Originally located in São Paulo's downtown district, in 1968 the museum transferred to its current building on Avenida Paulista, a landmark of striking 20th century architecture designed by Lina Bo Bardi using glass and concrete to convey a sense of lightness, transparency, and suspension.
