Forward-thinking epicenter of contemporary art
This vibrant and dynamic venue situated on Plaça dels Àngels sets the pace for contemporary art in the region. Its rigorously progressive curatorial program embraces the cutting-edge, while also showcasing an impeccably strong collection of classic modern art. A major focus is post-1945 Catalan and Spanish works, featuring artists such as Antoni Tàpies, Joan Brossa, Miquel Barceló and Joan Rabascall. The collection also highlights postwar international icons, including Joan Miró, Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Sol LeWitt and Robert Rauschenberg alongside stars of subsequent generations, including Jean-Michel Basquiat, Gerhard Richter, Jeff Wall, Dara Birnbaum and Dieter Roth. Nicknamed “the pearl” for its sleek, glass-fronted design amidst Gothic surroundings, this dazzling structure by New York City-based architect Richard Meier outwardly reflects its very contemporary interior. In line with its mission for openness, innovation and critical reflection, the museum hosts an internationally recognized exhibition program complemented by robust public programs.
