About the Museum
On December 14, 1992, the National Organization of the Spanish Blind (ONCE) inaugurated the Museo Tiflológico in Madrid with the desire to offer blind people the possibility of accessing a museum in a standardized way, without serious visual impairment constituting an insurmountable barrier when studying or enjoying the pieces. It responded in this way to a long-cherished project that can be traced back, at least, to the 70s of the 19th century, when a series of didactic collections were included in the National Association of deaf and blind people of Madrid that were included under the name of Museum of objects or Museum of things; this impulse would end up becoming an option for permanent education sponsored by associations of blind workers and aimed at the adult public. Nowadays, the Tiflológico Museum is a space conceived so that its visitors can see and touch the exhibited pieces, although what really makes it original and unique is the fact that it is a museum that was born by decision of its users and designed by these tailored needs.
