Museo Sa Bassa Blanca

Alcúdia, Mallorca | Spain

Eclectic integration of art, nature and architecture

Husband and wife artist-collectors Ben Jakober and Yannick Vu have created their own vision of an art complex in Museo Sa Bassa Blanca. Founded in 1993 in Alcúdia on the Spanish island of Mallorca, the museum has expanded over the past three decades to display the pair’s wide-ranging collection, including more than 150 European portraits of children from the 16th to the 19th centuries, a variety of artifacts from prehistoric fossils to historic African masks, a sculpture park of granite animals, and works of contemporary art from all over the world. The couple describe their original museum, situated in a protected wildlife sanctuary between the mountains and the sea, as a gesamtkunstwerk, or total work of art. The main building — the only one in Europe designed by the famed Egyptian architect Hassan Fathy — is Moorish in style, reflecting the history and heritage of the island.
