Museo Arqueológico Cuicuilco

Mexico City | Mexico

About the Museum

The Museo Arqueológico Cuicuilco covers one of the oldest cities in the Basin of Mexico and, as far as is known, the first great religious civic center of the Mexican Altiplano, an important Mesoamerican site of the Preclassic period (800 BC to 150 AD). Located in the south of Mexico City, Cuicuilco was destroyed and abandoned because of the eruption of the Xitle volcano, causing migrations and rearrangements of the population in the Basin of Mexico. The Cuicuilco Site Museum was inaugurated in 1970. This space shows the archaeological objects discovered during the excavations carried out in the area, consisting of skulls with deformation, aesthetic pieces of personal use, tools and the religion that was professed.
