Belgian showcase of modern art
The Musée Modern Museum (currently closed) presents an array of works dating from the late-18th century to the present day, covering significant international movements such as neoclassicism, realism, impressionism, surrealism and expressionism. The museum displays a number of works by some of the most influential Belgian artists, including James Ensor, René Magritte and Paul Delvaux. Their works join small-format examples of Belgian neoclassicism, alongside considerations of the Belgian revolution and the founding of the country. Among the museum’s most famous highlights is Jacques-Louis David’s arresting “Death of Marat.” The Musée Modern Museum regularly organises temporary exhibitions that focus on individual artists, movements, or themes in modern and contemporary art. Currently, the museum is closed and items from its collection are displayed through temporary exhibitions at other Musées Royaux Des Beaux-Arts de Belgique, to which it belongs.
